CATHOLIC PUBLIC DOMAINNOVA VULGATA
Paul, a servant of God and an Apostle of Jesus Christ, in accord with the faith of God’s elect and in acknowledgment of the truth which is accompanied by piety,1 Paulus servus Dei, apostolus autem Iesu Christi secundum fi dem electorumDei et agnitionem veritatis, quae secundum pietatem est
in the hope of the eternal life that God, who does not lie, promised before the ages of time,2 in spem vitaeaeternae, quam promisit, qui non mentitur, Deus ante tempora saecularia;
which, at the proper time, he has manifested by his Word, in the preaching that has been entrusted to me by the command of God our Savior;3 manifestavit autem temporibus suis verbum suum in praedicatione, quae creditaest mihi secundum praeceptum salvatoris nostri Dei,
to Titus, beloved son according to the common faith. Grace and peace, from God the Father and from Christ Jesus our Savior.4 Tito germano filiosecundum communem fidem: gratia et pax a Deo Patre et Christo Iesu salvatorenostro.
For this reason, I left you behind in Crete: so that those things which are lacking, you would correct, and so that you would ordain, throughout the communities, priests, (just as I also ordained you)5 Huius rei gratia reliqui te Cretae, ut ea, quae desunt, corrigas et constituasper civitates presbyteros, sicut ego tibi disposui,
if such a man is without offense, the husband of one wife, having faithful children, not accused of self-indulgence, nor of insubordination.6 si quis sine crimine est,unius uxoris vir, filios habens fideles, non in accusatione luxuriae aut nonsubiectos.
And a bishop, as a steward of God, must be without offense: not arrogant, not short-tempered, not a drunkard, not violent, not desiring tainted profit,7 Oportet enim episcopum sine crimine esse sicut Dei dispensatorem,non superbum, non iracundum, non vinolentum, non percussorem, non turpis lucricupidum,
but instead: hospitable, kind, sober, just, holy, chaste,8 sed hospitalem, benignum, sobrium, iustum, sanctum, continentem,
embracing faithful speech which is in agreement with doctrine, so that he may be able to exhort in sound doctrine and to argue against those who contradict.9 amplectentem eum, qui secundum doctrinam est, fidelem sermonem, ut potens sit etexhortari in doctrina sana et eos, qui contradicunt, arguere.
For there are, indeed, many who are disobedient, who speak empty words, and who deceive, especially those who are of the circumcision.10 Sunt enim multi et non subiecti, vaniloqui et seductores, maxime qui decircumcisione sunt,
These must be reproved, for they subvert entire houses, teaching things which should not be taught, for the favor of shameful gain.11 quibus oportet silentium imponere, quia universas domossubvertunt docentes, quae non oportet, turpis lucri gratia.
A certain one of these, a prophet of their own kind, said: “The Cretans are ever liars, evil beasts, lazy gluttons.”12 Dixit quidam exillis, proprius ipsorum propheta: “ Cretenses semper mendaces, malae bestiae,ventres pigri ”.
This testimony is true. Because of this, rebuke them sharply, so that they may be sound in the faith,13 Testimonium hoc verum est. Quam ob causam increpa illosdure, ut sani sint in fide,
not paying attention to Jewish fables, nor to the rules of men who have turned themselves away from the truth.14 non intendentes Iudaicis fabulis et mandatishominum aversantium veritatem.
All things are clean to those who are clean. But to those who are defiled, and to unbelievers, nothing is clean; for both their mind and their conscience have been polluted.15 Omnia munda mundis; coinquinatis autem et infidelibus nihil mundum, sedinquinatae sunt eorum et mens et conscientia.
They claim that they know God. But, by their own works, they deny him, since they are abominable, and unbelieving, and reprobate, toward every good work.16 Confitentur se nosse Deum, factis autem negant, cum sunt abominati etinoboedientes et ad omne opus bonum reprobi.
