Joshua 9

1 And when these things were heard, all the kings across the Jordan, who lived among the mountains and plains, along the coastline and shores of the great sea, also those who were living near Lebanon, the Hittite, and the Amorite, the Canaanite, the Perizzite, and the Hivite, and the Jebusite,	1 E avendo udite tutte quante queste cose di sopra scritte, tutti quanti i re di qua dal (fiume) Giordano, i quali istavano in su i monti e ne' piani e nelle maremme, e alla riva del mare maggiore, e ancora coloro i quali abitavano al lato al Libano, cioè l' Eteo e l' Amorreo e il Cananeo e il Ferezeo e l' Eveo e il Iebuseo,
2 gathered themselves together, so that they might fight against Joshua and Israel, with one mind and with the same resolve.	2 tutti insieme in uno si raunarono, acciò che combatteseno con Iosuè e con Israel, e con uno animo in una medesima sentenza.
3 But those who were living in Gibeon, hearing all that Joshua had done to Jericho and Ai,	3 Ma coloro i quali abitavano in Gabaon, udendo tutte quelle cose che avea fatte Iosuè a Gerico e ad Ai,
4 planning cleverly, took for themselves provisions, placing old sacks upon their donkeys, and wineskins that had torn and been sewed up,	4 pensando maliziosamente, si tolsero cibi con loro, e miserli in sacchi vecchi, e puosergli in su gli asini, e otri da vino discuciti e rotti,
5 and having very old shoes, which had been sewn with patches indicating their age, and being clothed in old garments, having also loaves, which they carried as food for the journey, which were hard and broken into pieces.	5 e calzamenti antichissimi in piedi, i quali mostrassero, e fosse segno che fossono consumati e invecchiati per lo lungo viaggio; e i pani che portavano parevano duri (per lo lungo viaggio) ed erano tutti rotti per pezzi.
6 And they traveled to Joshua, who at that time was staying in the camp at Gilgal. And they said to him, and to all of Israel with him, “We have come from a far away land, desiring to make peace with you.” And the sons of Israel responded to them, and said,	6 E andarono a Iosuè, il quale istava allora (nell' oste e) nel campo in Galgala, e si andarono a lui e a tutti i figliuoli d' Israel con queste cose, e sì gli dissero di terra molto lungi vegnamo, desiderando di fare pace. E respuosono loro i figliuoli d' Israel:
7 “Perhaps instead, you live in the land which ought to be ours by lot, and we would be unable to form a pact with you.”	7 Guardate che voi forse non istiate nella terra che ci è data in sorte, e che non possiate abitare nè fare patto (nè ligamento) con esso noi.
8 But they said to Joshua, “We are your servants.” And Joshua said to them: “But who are you? And where are you from?”	8 E' dissono a Iosuè; noi ti diciamo che noi siamo tuoi servi. Ai quali disse Iosuè: chi siete voi? e d'onde venite?
9 They responded: “Your servants have arrived, from a very far away land, in the name of the Lord, your God. For we have heard about the fame of his power, all the things that he has done in Egypt,	9 E rispuosono, e dissono: di terra molto di lungi sono venuti i tuoi servi, in nome di Dio tuo Signore; imperciò che noi udimmo la fama della grande potenza, e tutte le cose che fece in Egitto,
10 and to the two kings of the Amorites, who were beyond the Jordan: Sihon, the king of Heshbon, and Og, the king of Bashan, who was at Ashtaroth.	10 e a' due re degli Amorrei, di là dal (fiume) Giordano, a Seon re di Esebon e ad Og re di Basan, i quali erano in Astarot.
11 And our elders, and all the inhabitants of our land, have said to us: ‘Take in hand provisions for the very long journey, and meet with them, and say: We are your servants; form a pact with us.’	11 E dissonci li nostri antichi e tutti gli abitatori della terra nostra: togliete nelle vostre mani cibi, per cagione della grande e lunga rotta (la quale avete a fare), e andate incontro a loro, e si dite: noi siamo vostri servi, fate patto con esso noi.
12 Lo, the loaves were taken up warm when we departed from our houses, so that we might come to you. Now they have become dry and broken, due to age.	12 Ecco; i pani, quando uscimmo fuori delle case nostre per venire a voi, caldi gli togliemmo; e ora sono fatti secchi, e per la troppo vecchiezza sono rotti (e spezzati).
13 These wineskins were new when we filled them, now they are torn and broken. The garments we are wearing, and the shoes we have on our feet, due to the great length of the distance, have become worn and are nearly consumed.”	13 E gli otri nuovi, gli empiemmo di vino; ed ecco ora sono rotti e discuciti; i vestimenti e i calzamenti, i quali mettiamo e abbiamo in piede, per la lunghezza della lunga via sì sono rotti e (stracciati) quasi consumati.
14 And so they accepted this, because of their provisions, and they did not consult the mouth of the Lord.	14 E pigliarono (i figliuoli d' Israel) delli cibi loro; e non richiesono nella bocca di Dio, che dicesse.
15 And Joshua made peace with them, and entering into a pact, he promised that they would not be put to death. The leaders of the multitude also swore to them.	15 E fece Iosuè pace con loro; e fatto il patto, promise loro che non sarebbono morti; e ancora i principi, i quali erano sopra la moltitudine, sì 'l giurarono loro.
16 Then, three days after the pact was formed, they heard that they lived in the vicinity, and that they would soon be among them.	16 Ma passati i tre dì, poi che fu fatto (e confermato) il patto, sì udirono ch' egli abitavano loro presso, e sì erano loro vicini, e come doveano essere tra loro.
17 And so the sons of Israel moved the camp, and they arrived at their cities on the third day, those which are called: Gibeon, and Chephirah, and Beeroth, and Kiriath-jearim.	17 E mossono (l'oste e) il campo i figliuoli d'Israel, e vennero il terzo dì nelle città di costoro. E questi sono i vocaboli loro: Gabaon, Cafira e Berot e Cariatiarim.
18 And they did not strike them, because the leaders of the multitude had sworn to them in the name of the Lord, the God of Israel. And so all of the common people murmured against the leaders.	18 E non fecero male niuno, però che aveano loro giurato i principi della moltitudine nel nome di Dio Signore d' Israel. E mormorò tutto il popolo contro a' principi.
19 And they responded to them: “We have sworn to them in the name of the Lord, the God of Israel, and for that reason, we are not able to touch them.	19 E sì dissono e rispuosono loro i principi: noi giurammo loro nel nome di Dio d' Israel, e imperciò noi non gli possiamo toccare.
20 But we shall do this to them: Certainly, let them be preserved so that they may live, lest the wrath of the Lord be stirred up against us, since we would have sworn falsely.	20 Ma questo faremo loro: conservinsi e vivano, acciò che l'ira di Dio non si conciti (e muovasi) contra noi, se noi ci spergiurassimo.
21 But though they live, let them serve the entire multitude by cutting wood and carrying water.” And while they were discussing these things,	21 Ma vivano in questo modo, che loro taglino legna al bisogno di tutta quanta la moltitudine, portino l'acqua. A' quali dicendo queste parole,
22 Joshua called the Gibeonites, and he said to them: “Why would you be willing to deceive us by fraud, saying, ‘We live very far away from you,’ when you are in our midst?	22 chiamò Iosuè i Gabaoniti, e disse loro: perchè ci voleste ingannare di questo inganno, che molto da lungi abitiamo di voi, conciosia cosa che voi siate nel mezzo di noi?
23 Therefore, you shall be under a curse, and your stock shall not cease to be cutters of wood and carriers of water, into the house of my God.”	23 Adunque però sarete sotto maledizione (e sotto servitudine), e non sarà niuno nella vostra città che rimanga di tagliare legna e di portare acqua nella casa di Dio nostro Signore.
24 And they responded: “It was reported to us, your servants, that the Lord your God had promised his servant Moses that he would give you the entire land, and that he would destroy all its inhabitants. Therefore, we were very afraid, and we made a provision for our lives, compelled by the dread of you, and we undertook this counsel.	24 I quali sì rispuosono, e dissono: e' fue annunziato e detto a' servi tuoi, che Iddio tuo Signore avesse promesso a Moisè servo suo, che vi (metterebbe nelle mani e) darebbe ogni terra, e sì ucciderebbe tutti gli abitatori suoi; e imperciò noi avevamo grandissima paura, e sì provedemmo all' anime nostre, (isbigottiti e) costretti della vostra paura; e però facemmo e ordinammo questo consiglio.
25 And now we are in your hand. Act toward us as it seems good and right to you.”	25 Ma ecco che ora siamo nelle tue mani; quello che ti pare buono e diritto, sì ci fa.
26 Therefore, Joshua did just as he had said, and he freed them from the hand of the sons of Israel, so that they would not be killed.	26 E fece Iosuè come avea detto; e sì gli liberò delle mani de' figliuoli d' Israel, acciò che non fossono morti.
27 And he decreed on that day, that they would be in the ministry of all the people and of the altar of the Lord, cutting wood and carrying water, even until this present time, in the place which the Lord had chosen.	27 E sì ordinò (e determinò) quel dì, che fossono in servigio di tutto il popolo e dell' altare di Dio, tagliando legna e portando l'acqua, insino al (dì e al) tempo presente, in quello luogo che Iddio Signore eleggesse.
