Joshua 14

1 This is what the sons of Israel possessed in the land of Canaan, which Eleazar, the priest, and Joshua, the son of Nun, and the leaders of the families, by the tribes of Israel, gave to them,	1 Voici l’héritage des Israélites au pays de Canaan. Voici ce que le prêtre Éléazar, Josué fils de Noun, et les chefs des clans des tribus d’Israël leur donnèrent en héritage.
2 dividing all by lot, just as the Lord had instructed by the hand of Moses, to the nine tribes and to the one half tribe.	2 On partagea l’héritage par le sort, comme Yahvé l’avait ordonné par la voix de Moïse, entre neuf tribus et demie.
3 For to the two and one half tribes, Moses had given a possession beyond the Jordan, aside from the Levites, who received no land among their brothers.	3 Moïse avait en effet donné un héritage aux deux tribus et demie de l’autre côté du Jourdain. Il n’avait pas donné d’héritage aux Lévites au milieu d’eux,
4 For by succession, the sons of Joseph, in their place, were divided into two tribes, Manasseh and Ephraim. But the Levites did not receive another portion of land, except cities in which to live, and their suburbs, so as to feed their beasts of burden and cattle.	4 mais par ailleurs les fils de Joseph formaient deux tribus: Manassé et Éphraïm. Les Lévites ne reçurent rien d’autre que les villes où ils habitaient, avec les terres qui les entouraient, pour leurs troupeaux et leurs biens.
5 Just as the Lord had commanded Moses, so the sons of Israel did, and they divided the land.	5 Les Israélites partagèrent le pays en se conformant à l’ordre que Yahvé avait donné à Moïse.
6 And so, the sons of Judah approached Joshua at Gilgal. And Caleb, the son of Jephone, the Kenizzite, spoke to him: “You know what the Lord said to Moses, the man of God, at Kadesh-barnea, about me and you.	6 Les fils de Juda vinrent trouver Josué à Guilgal et Caleb, fils de Yéfouné le Kénizite, lui dit: “Tu sais ce que Yahvé a dit à Moïse, l’homme de Dieu, à mon sujet et au tien, lorsque nous étions à Qadesh-Barné.
7 I was forty years old when Moses, the servant of the Lord, sent me from Kadesh-barnea, so that I might consider the land. And I reported to him what seemed to me to be true.	7 J’avais 40 ans lorsque Moïse, le serviteur de Yahvé, m’envoya de Qadesh-Barné pour reconnaître le pays, et je lui ai fait mon rapport en toute sincérité.
8 But my brothers, who had ascended with me, broke the heart of the people. And I nevertheless followed the Lord my God.	8 Alors que mes frères qui étaient montés avec moi décourageaient le peuple, je suis resté fidèle à Yahvé mon Dieu.
9 And Moses swore, on that day, saying: ‘The land that your foot has tread upon shall be your possession, and that of your sons, unto eternity. For you have followed the Lord my God.’	9 C’est pourquoi ce jour-là Moïse a fait ce serment: Le pays que ton pied a foulé sera ton héritage et celui de tes descendants pour toujours, parce que tu as suivi fidèlement Yahvé mon Dieu.
10 Therefore, the Lord has granted life to me, just as he promised, even to the present day. It has been forty-five years since the Lord spoke this word to Moses, when Israel was wandering through the wilderness. Today, I am eighty-five years old,	10 Cela fait 45 ans que Yahvé a adressé cette parole à Moïse alors qu’Israël marchait dans le désert, et Yahvé m’a conservé en vie comme il l’avait promis. J’ai maintenant 85 ans,
11 being just as strong as I was at that time, when I was sent to explore the land. The fortitude in me at that time continues even until today, as much to fight as to march.	11 mais je suis encore aussi solide qu’au jour où Moïse m’a envoyé. Je suis aussi fort maintenant qu’autrefois, aussi bien pour combattre que pour aller et venir.
12 Therefore, grant to me this mountain, which the Lord has promised in your hearing also, on which are the Anakim, and cities, great and fortified. Perhaps it may be that the Lord will be with me, and I will be able to destroy them, just as he promised to me.”	12 Donne-moi donc cette montagne dont Yahvé a parlé ce jour-là. Tu l’as entendu toi-même alors: là se trouvent les Anakim, dans leurs villes grandes et fortifiées, mais Yahvé sera avec moi et je réussirai à les chasser comme Yahvé l’a dit.
13 And Joshua blessed him, and he delivered Hebron to him as a possession.	13 Josué bénit Caleb fils de Yéfouné et lui donna Hébron en héritage.
14 And from then on, Hebron was for Caleb, the son of Jephunneh, the Kenizzite, even to the present day. For he followed the Lord, the God of Israel.	14 C’est pour cela qu’Hébron a fait partie jusqu’à ce jour de l’héritage de Caleb, fils de Yéfouné le Kénizite, car il avait suivi fidèlement Yahvé, le Dieu d’Israël.
15 Previously, the name Hebron was called Kiriath-Arba. Adam, the greatest among the Anakim, was laid there. And the land ceased from battles.	15 Hébron s’appelait autrefois Kiryat-Arba (cet Arba était en effet le grand homme des Anakim); et avec cela le pays se reposa de la guerre.
