1 Corinthians 12

1 Now concerning spiritual things, I do not want you to be ignorant, brothers.1 About the gifts of the Spirit, brothers, I want you to be quite certain.
2 You know that when you were Gentiles, you approached mute idols, doing what you were led to do.2 You remember that, when you were pagans, you were irresistibly drawn to inarticulate heathen gods.
3 Because of this, I would have you know that no one speaking in the Spirit of God utters a curse against Jesus. And no one is able to say that Jesus is Lord, except in the Holy Spirit.3 Because of that, I want to make it quite clear to you that no one who says 'A curse on Jesus' can bespeaking in the Spirit of God, and nobody is able to say, 'Jesus is Lord' except in the Holy Spirit.
4 Truly, there are diverse graces, but the same Spirit.4 There are many different gifts, but it is always the same Spirit;
5 And there are diverse ministries, but the same Lord.5 there are many different ways of serving, but it is always the same Lord.
6 And there are diverse works, but the same God, who works everything in everyone.6 There are many different forms of activity, but in everybody it is the same God who is at work in themal .
7 However, the manifestation of the Spirit is given to each one toward what is beneficial.7 The particular manifestation of the Spirit granted to each one is to be used for the general good.
8 Certainly, to one, through the Spirit, is given words of wisdom; but to another, according to the same Spirit, words of knowledge;8 To one is given from the Spirit the gift of utterance expressing wisdom; to another the gift of utteranceexpressing knowledge, in accordance with the same Spirit;
9 to another, in the same Spirit, faith; to another, in the one Spirit, the gift of healing;9 to another, faith, from the same Spirit; and to another, the gifts of healing, through this one Spirit;
10 to another, miraculous works; to another, prophecy; to another, the discernment of spirits; to another, different kinds of languages; to another, the interpretation of words.10 to another, the working of miracles; to another, prophecy; to another, the power of distinguishingspirits; to one, the gift of different tongues and to another, the interpretation of tongues.
11 But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one according to his will.11 But at work in al these is one and the same Spirit, distributing them at wil to each individual.
12 For just as the body is one, and yet has many parts, so all the parts of the body, though they are many, are only one body. So also is Christ.12 For as with the human body which is a unity although it has many parts -- al the parts of the body,though many, stil making up one single body -- so it is with Christ.
13 And indeed, in one Spirit, we were all baptized into one body, whether Jews or Gentiles, whether servant or free. And we all drank in the one Spirit.13 We were baptised into one body in a single Spirit, Jews as wel as Greeks, slaves as wel as freemen, and we were all given the same Spirit to drink.
14 For the body, too, is not one part, but many.14 And indeed the body consists not of one member but of many.
15 If the foot were to say, “Because I am not the hand, I am not of the body,” would it then not be of the body?15 If the foot were to say, 'I am not a hand and so I do not belong to the body,' it does not belong to thebody any the less for that.
16 And if the ear were to say, “Because I am not the eye, I am not of the body,” would it then not be of the body?16 Or if the ear were to say, 'I am not an eye, and so I do not belong to the body,' that would not stop itsbelonging to the body.
17 If the whole body were the eye, how would it hear? If the whole were hearing, how would it smell?17 If the whole body were just an eye, how would there be any hearing? If the whole body were hearing,how would there be any smel ing?
18 But instead, God has placed the parts, each one of them, in the body, just as it has pleased him.18 As it is, God has put al the separate parts into the body as he chose.
19 So if they were all one part, how would it be a body?19 If they were al the same part, how could it be a body?
20 But instead, there are many parts, indeed, yet one body.20 As it is, the parts are many but the body is one.
21 And the eye cannot say to the hand, “I have no need for your works.” And again, the head cannot say to the feet, “You are of no use to me.”21 The eye cannot say to the hand, 'I have no need of you,' and nor can the head say to the feet, 'I haveno need of you.'
22 In fact, so much more necessary are those parts of the body which seem to be weaker.22 What is more, it is precisely the parts of the body that seem to be the weakest which are theindispensable ones.
23 And though we consider certain parts of the body to be less noble, we surround these with more abundant dignity, and so, those parts which are less presentable end up with more abundant respect.23 It is the parts of the body which we consider least dignified that we surround with the greatest dignity;and our less presentable parts are given greater presentability
24 However, our presentable parts have no such need, since God has tempered the body together, distributing the more abundant honor to that which has the need,24 which our presentable parts do not need. God has composed the body so that greater dignity isgiven to the parts which were without it,
25 so that there might be no schism in the body, but instead the parts themselves might take care of one another.25 and so that there may not be disagreements inside the body but each part may be equal y concernedfor all the others.
26 And so, if one part suffers anything, all the parts suffer with it. Or, if one part finds glory, all the parts rejoice with it.26 If one part is hurt, al the parts share its pain. And if one part is honoured, all the parts share its joy.
27 Now you are the body of Christ, and parts like any part.27 Now Christ's body is yourselves, each of you with a part to play in the whole.
28 And indeed, God has established a certain order in the Church: first Apostles, second Prophets, third Teachers, next miracle-workers, and then the grace of healing, of helping others, of governing, of different kinds of languages, and of the interpretation of words.28 And those whom God has appointed in the Church are, first apostles, secondly prophets, thirdlyteachers; after them, miraculous powers, then gifts of healing, helpful acts, guidance, various kinds of tongues.
29 Are all Apostles? Are all Prophets? Are all Teachers?29 Are al of them apostles? Or all prophets? Or all teachers? Or al miracle-workers?
30 Are all workers of miracles? Do all have the grace of healing? Do all speak in tongues? Do all interpret?30 Do al have the gifts of healing? Do al of them speak in tongues and al interpret them?
31 But be zealous for the better charisms. And I reveal to you a yet more excellent way.31 Set your mind on the higher gifts. And now I am going to put before you the best way of all.
