CATHOLIC PUBLIC DOMAINSAGRADA BIBLIA
After these things, having departed from Athens, he arrived at Corinth.1 Depois disso, saindo de Atenas, Paulo dirigiu-se a Corinto.
And upon finding a certain Jew named Aquila, born in Pontus, who had recently arrived from Italy with Priscilla his wife, (because Claudius had ordered all Jews to depart from Rome,) he met with them.2 Encontrou ali um judeu chamado Áquila, natural do Ponto, e sua mulher Priscila.
And because he was of the same trade, he lodged with them and was working. (Now they were tentmakers by trade.)3 Como exercessem o mesmo ofício, morava e trabalhava com eles. {Eram fabricantes de tendas.}
And he was arguing in the synagogue on every Sabbath, introducing the name of the Lord Jesus. And he was persuading Jews and Greeks.4 Todos os sábados ele falava na sinagoga e procurava convencer os judeus e os gregos.
And when Silas and Timothy had arrived from Macedonia, Paul stood firm in the Word, testifying to the Jews that Jesus is the Christ.5 Quando Silas e Timóteo chegaram da Macedônia, Paulo dedicou-se inteiramente à pregação da palavra, dando aos judeus testemunho de que Jesus era o Messias.
But since they were contradicting him and blaspheming, he shook out his garments and said to them: “Your blood is on your own heads. I am clean. From now on, I will go to the Gentiles.”6 Mas como esses contradissessem e o injuriassem, ele, sacudindo as vestes, disse-lhes: O vosso sangue caia sobre a vossa cabeça! Tenho as mãos inocentes.
And moving from that place, he entered into the house of a certain man, named Titus the Just, a worshiper of God, whose house was adjoined to the synagogue.7 Saindo dali, entrou em casa de um prosélito, chamado Tício Justo, cuja casa era contígua à sinagoga.
Now Crispus, a leader of the synagogue, believed in the Lord, with his entire house. And many of the Corinthians, upon hearing, believed and were baptized.8 Entretanto Crispo, o chefe da sinagoga, acreditou no Senhor com todos os da sua casa.
Then the Lord said to Paul, through a vision in the night: “Do not be afraid. Instead, speak out and do not be silent.9 Numa noite, o Senhor disse a Paulo em visão: Não temas! Fala e não te cales.
For I am with you. And no one will take hold of you, so as to do you harm. For many of the people in this city are with me.”10 Porque eu estou contigo.
Then he settled there for a year and six months, teaching the Word of God among them.11 Paulo deteve-se ali um ano e seis meses, ensinando a eles a palavra de Deus.
But when Gallio was proconsul of Achaia, the Jews rose up with one accord against Paul. And they brought him to the tribunal,12 Sendo Galião procônsul da Acaia, levantaram-se os judeus de comum acordo contra Paulo e levaram-no ao tribunal e disseram:
saying, “He persuades men to worship God contrary to the law.”13 Este homem persuade os ouvintes a {adotar} um culto contrário à lei.
Then, when Paul was beginning to open his mouth, Gallio said to the Jews: “If this were some matter of injustice, or a wicked deed, O noble Jews, I would support you, as is proper.14 Paulo ia falar, mas Galião disse aos judeus: Se fosse, na realidade, uma injustiça ou verdadeiro crime, seria razoável que vos atendesse.
Yet if truly these are questions about a word and names and your law, you should see to it yourselves. I will not be the judge of such things.”15 Mas se são questões de doutrina, de nomes e da vossa lei, isso é lá convosco. Não quero ser juiz dessas coisas.
And he ordered them from the tribunal.16 E mandou-o sair do tribunal.
But they, apprehending Sosthenes, a leader of the synagogue, beat him in front of the tribunal. And Gallio showed no concern for these things.17 Então todos pegaram em Sóstenes, chefe da sinagoga, e o espancaram diante do tribunal, sem que Galião fizesse caso algum disso.
Yet truly, Paul, after he had remained for many more days, having said goodbye to the brothers, sailed into Syria, and with him were Priscilla and Aquila. Now he had shaved his head in Cenchreae, for he had made a vow.18 Paulo permaneceu ali {em Corinto} ainda algum tempo.
And he arrived at Ephesus, and he left them behind there. Yet truly, he himself, entering into the synagogue, was disputing with the Jews.19 Chegaram a Éfeso, onde os deixou.
Then, although they were asking him to remain for a longer time, he would not agree.20 Pediram-lhe estes que ficasse com eles ali por mais tempo, mas ele não quis.
Instead, saying goodbye and telling them, “I will return to you again, God willing,” he set out from Ephesus.21 Ao despedir-se, disse: Voltarei a vós, se Deus quiser. E partiu de Éfeso.
And after going down to Caesarea, he went up to Jerusalem, and he greeted the Church there, and then he descended to Antioch.22 Viajou até Cesaréia, subiu {a Jerusalém} e saudou a comunidade e logo em seguida desceu a Antioquia.
And having spent some length of time there, he set out, and he walked in order through the region of Galatia and Phrygia, strengthening all the disciples.23 Aí se demorou apenas por algum tempo, partiu de novo e atravessou sucessivamente as regiões da Galácia e da Frígia, fortalecendo todos os discípulos.
Now a certain Jew named Apollo, born at Alexandria, an eloquent man who was powerful with the Scriptures, arrived at Ephesus.24 Entrementes, um judeu chamado Apolo, natural de Alexandria, homem eloqüente e muito versado nas Escrituras, chegou a Éfeso.
He was learned in the Way of the Lord. And being fervent in spirit, he was speaking and teaching the things that are of Jesus, but knowing only the baptism of John.25 Era instruído no caminho do Senhor, falava com fervor de espírito e ensinava com precisão a respeito de Jesus, embora conhecesse somente o batismo de João.
And so, he began to act faithfully in the synagogue. And when Priscilla and Aquila had heard him, they took him aside and expounded the Way of the Lord to him more thoroughly.26 Começou, pois, a falar na sinagoga com desassombro.
Then, since he wanted to go to Achaia, the brothers wrote an exhortation to the disciples, so that they might accept him. And when he had arrived, he held many discussions with those who had believed.27 Como ele quisesse ir à Acaia, os irmãos animaram-no e escreveram aos discípulos que o recebessem bem.
For he was vehemently and publicly reproving the Jews, by revealing through the Scriptures that Jesus is the Christ.28 pois com grande veemência refutava publicamente os judeus, provando, pelas Escrituras, que Jesus era o Messias.
