CATHOLIC PUBLIC DOMAINEL LIBRO DEL PUEBLO DE DIOS
And Jesus, while passing by, saw a man blind from birth.1 Al pasar, vio a un hombre ciego de nacimiento.
And his disciples asked him, “Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he would be born blind?”2 Sus discípulos le preguntaron: «Maestro, ¿quién ha pecado, él o sus padres, para que haya nacido ciego?».
Jesus responded: “Neither this man nor his parents sinned, but it was so that the works of God would be made manifest in him.3 «Ni él ni sus padres han pecado, respondió Jesús; nació así para que se manifiesten en él las obras de Dios.
I must work the works of him who sent me, while it is day: the night is coming, when no one is able to work.4 Debemos trabajar en las obras de aquel que me envió, mientras es de día; llega la noche, cuando nadie puede trabajar.
As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world.”5 Mientras estoy en el mundo, soy la luz del mundo»
When he had said these things, he spat on the ground, and he made clay from the spittle, and he smeared the clay over his eyes.6 Después que dijo esto, escupió en la tierra, hizo barro con la saliva y lo puso sobre los ojos del ciego,
And he said to him: “Go, wash in the pool of Siloam” (which is translated as: one who has been sent). Therefore, he went away and washed, and he returned, seeing.7 diciéndole: «Ve a lavarte a la piscina de Siloé», que significa "Enviado". El ciego fue, se lavó y, al regresar, ya veía.
And so the bystanders and those who had seen him before, when he was a beggar, said, “Is this not the one who was sitting and begging?” Some said, “This is he.”8 Los vecinos y los que antes lo habían visto mendigar, se preguntaban: «¿No es este el que se sentaba a pedir limosna?».
But others said, “Certainly not, but he is similar to him.” Yet truly, he himself said, “I am he.”9 Unos opinaban: «Es el mismo». «No, respondían otros, es uno que se le parece». El decía: «Soy realmente yo».
Therefore, they said to him, “How were your eyes opened?”10 Ellos le dijeron: «¿Cómo se te han abierto los ojos?».
He responded: “That man who is called Jesus made clay, and he anointed my eyes and said to me, ‘Go to the pool of Siloam and wash.’ And I went, and I washed, and I see.”11 El respondió: «Ese hombre que se llama Jesús hizo barro, lo puso sobre mis ojos y me dijo: «Ve a lavarte a Siloé». Yo fui, me lavé y vi».
And they said to him, “Where is he?” He said, “I do not know.”12 Ellos le preguntaron: «¿Dónde está?». El respondió: «No lo sé».
They brought the one who had been blind to the Pharisees.13 El que había sido ciego fue llevado ante los fariseos.
Now it was the Sabbath, when Jesus made the clay and opened his eyes.14 Era sábado cuando Jesús hizo barro y le abrió los ojos.
Therefore, again the Pharisees questioned him as to how he had seen. And he said to them, “He placed clay over my eyes, and I washed, and I see.”15 Los fariseos, a su vez, le preguntaron cómo había llegado a ver. El les respondió: «Me puso barro sobre los ojos, me lavé y veo».
And so certain Pharisees said: “This man, who does not keep the Sabbath, is not from God.” But others said, “How could a sinful man accomplish these signs?” And there was a schism among them.16 Algunos fariseos decían: «Ese hombre no viene de Dios, porque no observa el sábado». Otros replicaban: «¿Cómo un pecador puede hacer semejantes signos?». Y se produjo una división entre ellos.
Therefore, they spoke again to the blind man, “What do you say about him who opened your eyes?” Then he said, “He is a Prophet.”17 Entonces dijeron nuevamente al ciego: «Y tú, ¿qué dices del que te abrió los ojos?». El hombre respondió: «Es un profeta».
Therefore, the Jews did not believe, about him, that he had been blind and had seen, until they called the parents of him who had seen.18 Sin embargo, los judíos no querían creer que ese hombre había sido ciego y que había llegado a ver, hasta que llamaron a sus padres
And they questioned them, saying: “Is this your son, whom you say was born blind? Then how is it that he now sees?”19 y les preguntaron: «¿Es este el hijo de ustedes, el que dicen que nació ciego? ¿Cómo es que ahora ve?».
His parents responded to them and said: “We know that this is our son and that he was born blind.20 Sus padres respondieron: «Sabemos que es nuestro hijo y que nació ciego,
But how it is that he now sees, we do not know. And who opened his eyes, we do not know. Ask him. He is old enough. Let him speak for himself.”21 pero cómo es que ahora ve y quién le abrió los ojos, no lo sabemos. Pregúntenle a él: tiene edad para responder por su cuenta».
His parents said these things because they were afraid of the Jews. For the Jews had already conspired, so that if anyone were to confess him to be the Christ, he would be expelled from the synagogue.22 Sus padres dijeron esto por temor a los judíos, que ya se habían puesto de acuerdo para excluir de la sinagoga al que reconociera a Jesús como Mesías.
It was for this reason that his parents said: “He is old enough. Ask him.”23 Por esta razón dijeron: «Tiene bastante edad, pregúntenle a él».
Therefore, they again called the man who had been blind, and they said to him: “Give glory to God. We know that this man is a sinner.”24 Los judíos llamaron por segunda vez al que había sido ciego y le dijeron: «Glorifica a Dios. Nosotros sabemos que ese hombre es un pecador».
And so he said to them: “If he is a sinner, I do not know it. One thing I do know, that although I was blind, now I see.”25 «Yo no sé si es un pecador, respondió; lo que sé es que antes yo era ciego y ahora veo».
Then they said to him: “What did he do to you? How did he open your eyes?”26 Ellos le preguntaron: «¿Qué te ha hecho? ¿Cómo te abrió los ojos?».
He answered them: “I have already told you, and you heard it. Why do you want to hear it again? Do you also want to become his disciples?”27 El les respondió: «Ya se lo dije y ustedes no me han escuchado. ¿Por qué quieren oírlo de nuevo? ¿También ustedes quieren hacerse discípulos suyos?».
Therefore, they cursed him and said: “You be his disciple. But we are disciples of Moses.28 Ellos lo injuriaron y le dijeron: «¡Tú serás discípulo de ese hombre; nosotros somos discípulos de Moisés!
We know that God spoke to Moses. But this man, we do not know where he is from.”29 Sabemos que Dios habló a Moisés, pero no sabemos de dónde es este».
The man responded and said to them: “Now in this is a wonder: that you do not know where he is from, and yet he has opened my eyes.30 El hombre les respondió: «Esto es lo asombroso: que ustedes no sepan de dónde es, a pesar de que me ha abierto los ojos.
And we know that God does not hear sinners. But if anyone is a worshipper of God and does his will, then he heeds him.31 Sabemos que Dios no escucha a los pecadores, pero si al que lo honra y cumple su voluntad.
From ancient times, it has not been heard that anyone has opened the eyes of someone born blind.32 Nunca se oyó decir que alguien haya abierto los ojos a un ciego de nacimiento.
Unless this man were of God, he would not be able to do any such thing.”33 Si este hombre no viniera de Dios, no podría hacer nada».
They responded and said to him, “You were born entirely in sins, and you would teach us?” And they cast him out.34 Ellos le respondieron: «Tú naciste lleno de pecado, y ¿quieres darnos lecciones?». Y lo echaron.
Jesus heard that they had cast him out. And when he had found him, he said to him, “Do you believe in the Son of God?”35 Jesús se enteró de que lo habían echado y, al encontrarlo, le preguntó: «¿Crees en el Hijo del hombre?».
He responded and said, “Who is he, Lord, so that I may believe in him?”36 El respondió: «¿Quién es, Señor, para que crea en él?».
And Jesus said to him, “You have both seen him, and he is the one who is speaking with you.”37 Jesús le dijo: «Tú lo has visto: es el que te está hablando».
And he said, “I believe, Lord.” And falling prostrate, he worshipped him.38 Entonces él exclamó: «Creo, Señor», y se postró ante él.
And Jesus said, “I came into this world in judgment, so that those who do not see, may see; and so that those who see, may become blind.”39 Después Jesús agregó: «He venido a este mundo para un juicio: Para que vean los que no ven y queden ciegos los que ven».
And certain Pharisees, who were with him, heard this, and they said to him, “Are we also blind?”40 Los fariseos que estaban con él oyeron esto y le dijeron: «¿Acaso también nosotros somos ciegos?».
Jesus said to them: “If you were blind, you would not have sin. Yet now you say, ‘We see.’ So your sin persists.”41 Jesús les respondió: «Si ustedes fueran ciegos, no tendrían pecado, pero como dicen: "Vemos", su pecado permanece».
