Then six days before the Passover, Jesus went to Bethania, where Lazarus had died, whom Jesus raised up.1 Six days before the Passover, Jesus went to Bethany, where Lazarus was, whom he had raised fromthe dead.
And they made a dinner for him there. And Martha was ministering. And truly, Lazarus was one of those who were sitting at table with him.2 They gave a dinner for him there; Martha waited on them and Lazarus was among those at table.
And then Mary took twelve ounces of pure spikenard ointment, very precious, and she anointed the feet of Jesus, and she wiped his feet with her hair. And the house was filled with the fragrance of the ointment.3 Mary brought in a pound of very costly ointment, pure nard, and with it anointed the feet of Jesus, wiping them with her hair; the house was fil ed with the scent of the ointment.
Then one of his disciples, Judas Iscariot, who was soon to betray him, said,4 Then Judas Iscariot -- one of his disciples, the man who was to betray him-said,
“Why was this ointment not sold for three hundred denarii and given to the needy?”5 'Why was this ointment not sold for three hundred denari and the money given to the poor?'
Now he said this, not out of concern for the needy, but because he was a thief and, since he held the purse, he used to carry what was put into it.6 He said this, not because he cared about the poor, but because he was a thief; he was in charge of thecommon fund and used to help himself to the contents.
But Jesus said: “Permit her, so that she may keep it against the day of my burial.7 So Jesus said, 'Leave her alone; let her keep it for the day of my burial.
For the poor, you have with you always. But me, you do always not have.”8 You have the poor with you always, you wil not always have me.'
Now a great multitude of the Jews knew that he was in that place, and so they came, not so much because of Jesus, but so that they might see Lazarus, whom he had raised from the dead.9 Meanwhile a large number of Jews heard that he was there and came not only on account of Jesusbut also to see Lazarus whom he had raised from the dead.
And the leaders of the priests planned to put Lazarus to death also.10 Then the chief priests decided to kill Lazarus as well,
For many of the Jews, because of him, were going away and were believing in Jesus.11 since it was on his account that many of the Jews were leaving them and believing in Jesus.
Then, on the next day, the great crowd that had come to the feast day, when they had heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem,12 The next day the great crowd of people who had come up for the festival heard that Jesus was on hisway to Jerusalem.
took branches of palm trees, and they went ahead to meet him. And they were crying out: “Hosanna! Blessed is he who arrives in the name of the Lord, the king of Israel!”13 They took branches of palm and went out to receive him, shouting: 'Hosanna! Blessed is he who iscoming in the name of the Lord, the king of Israel.'
And Jesus found a small donkey, and he sat upon it, just as it is written:14 Jesus found a young donkey and mounted it -- as scripture says:
“Do not be afraid, daughter of Zion. Behold, your king arrives, sitting on the colt of a donkey.”15 Do not be afraid, daughter of Zion; look, your king is approaching, riding on the foal of a donkey.
At first, his disciples did not realize these things. But when Jesus was glorified, then they remembered that these things were written about him, and that these things happened to him.16 At first his disciples did not understand this, but later, after Jesus had been glorified, theyremembered that this had been written about him and that this was what had happened to him.
And so the crowd that had been with him, when he called Lazarus from the tomb and raised him from the dead, offered testimony.17 The crowd who had been with him when he cal ed Lazarus out of the tomb and raised him from thedead kept bearing witness to it;
Because of this, too, the crowd went out to meet him. For they heard that he had accomplished this sign.18 this was another reason why the crowd came out to receive him: they had heard that he had giventhis sign.
Therefore, the Pharisees said among themselves: “Do you see that we are accomplishing nothing? Behold, the entire world has gone after him.”19 Then the Pharisees said to one another, 'You see, you are making no progress; look, the whole worldhas gone after him!'
Now there were certain Gentiles among those who went up so that they might worship on the feast day.20 Among those who went up to worship at the festival were some Greeks.
Therefore, these approached Philip, who was from Bethsaida of Galilee, and they petitioned him, saying: “Sir, we want to see Jesus.”21 These approached Philip, who came from Bethsaida in Galilee, and put this request to him, 'Sir, weshould like to see Jesus.'
Philip went and told Andrew. Next, Andrew and Philip told Jesus.22 Philip went to tell Andrew, and Andrew and Philip together went to tel Jesus.
But Jesus answered them by saying: “The hour arrives when the Son of man shall be glorified.23 Jesus replied to them: Now the hour has come for the Son of man to be glorified.
Amen, amen, I say to you, unless the grain of wheat falls to the ground and dies,24 In all truth I tell you, unless a wheat grain fal s into the earth and dies, it remains only a single grain;but if it dies it yields a rich harvest.
it remains alone. But if it dies, it yields much fruit. Whoever loves his life, will lose it. And whoever hates his life in this world, preserves it unto eternal life.25 Anyone who loves his life loses it; anyone who hates his life in this world wil keep it for eternal life.
If anyone serves me, let him follow me. And where I am, there too my minister shall be. If anyone has served me, my Father will honor him.26 Whoever serves me, must fol ow me, and my servant wil be with me wherever I am. If anyone servesme, my Father wil honour him.
Now my soul is troubled. And what should I say? Father, save me from this hour? But it is for this reason that I came to this hour.27 Now my soul is troubled. What shal I say: Father, save me from this hour? But it is for this veryreason that I have come to this hour.
Father, glorify your name!” And then a voice came from heaven, “I have glorified it, and I will glorify it again.”28 Father, glorify your name! A voice came from heaven, 'I have glorified it, and I wil again glorify it.'
Therefore, the crowd, which was standing near and had heard it, said that it was like thunder. Others were saying, “An Angel was speaking with him.”29 The crowd standing by, who heard this, said it was a clap of thunder; others said, 'It was an angelspeaking to him.'
Jesus responded and said: “This voice came, not for my sake, but for your sakes.30 Jesus answered, 'It was not for my sake that this voice came, but for yours.
Now is the judgment of the world. Now will the prince of this world be cast out.31 'Now sentence is being passed on this world; now the prince of this world is to be driven out.
And when I have been lifted up from the earth, I will draw all things to myself.”32 And when I am lifted up from the earth, I shal draw al people to myself.'
(Now he said this, signifying what kind of death he would die.)33 By these words he indicated the kind of death he would die.
The crowd answered him: “We have heard, from the law, that the Christ remains forever. And so how can you say, ‘The Son of man must be lifted up?’ Who is this Son of man?”34 The crowd answered, 'The Law has taught us that the Christ wil remain for ever. So how can yousay, "The Son of man must be lifted up"? Who is this Son of man?'
Therefore, Jesus said to them: “For a brief time, the Light is among you. Walk while you have the Light, so that the darkness may not overtake you. But whoever walks in darkness does not know where is he going.35 Jesus then said: The light wil be with you only a little longer now. Go on your way while you have thelight, or darkness wil overtake you, and nobody who walks in the dark knows where he is going.
While you have the Light, believe in the Light, so that you may be sons of the Light.” Jesus spoke these things, and then he went away and hid himself from them.36 While you stil have the light, believe in the light so that you may become children of light. Having saidthis, Jesus left them and was hidden from their sight.
And although he had done such great signs in their presence, they did not believe in him,37 Though they had been present when he gave so many signs, they did not believe in him;
so that the word of the prophet Isaiah might be fulfilled, which says: “Lord, who has believed in our hearing? And to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed?”38 this was to fulfil the words of the prophet Isaiah: Lord, who has given credence to what they haveheard from us, and who has seen in it a revelation of the Lord's arm?
Because of this, they were not able to believe, for Isaiah said again:39 Indeed, they were unable to believe because, as Isaiah says again:
“He has blinded their eyes, and hardened their heart, so that they may not see with their eyes, and understand with their heart, and be converted: and then I would heal them.”40 He has blinded their eyes, he has hardened their heart, to prevent them from using their eyes to see, using their heart to understand, changing their ways and being healed by me.
These things Isaiah said, when he saw his glory and was speaking about him.41 Isaiah said this because he saw his glory, and his words referred to Jesus.
Yet truly, many of the leaders also believed in him. But because of the Pharisees, they did not confess him, so that they would not be cast out of the synagogue.42 And yet there were many who did believe in him, even among the leading men, but they did not admitit, because of the Pharisees and for fear of being banned from the synagogue:
For they loved the glory of men more than the glory of God.43 they put human glory before God's glory.
But Jesus cried out and said: “Whoever believes in me, does not believe in me, but in him who sent me.44 Jesus declared publicly: Whoever believes in me believes not in me but in the one who sent me,
And whoever sees me, sees him who sent me.45 and whoever sees me, sees the one who sent me.
I have arrived as a light to the world, so that all who believe in me might not remain in darkness.46 I have come into the world as light, to prevent anyone who believes in me from staying in the darkany more.
And if anyone has heard my words and not kept them, I do not judge him. For I did not come so that I may judge the world, but so that I may save the world.47 If anyone hears my words and does not keep them faithful y, it is not I who shal judge such a person, since I have come not to judge the world, but to save the world:
Whoever despises me and does not accept my words has one who judges him. The word that I have spoken, the same shall judge him on the last day.48 anyone who rejects me and refuses my words has his judge already: the word itself that I havespoken wil be his judge on the last day.
For I am not speaking from myself, but from the Father who sent me. He gave a commandment to me as to what I should say and how I should speak.49 For I have not spoken of my own accord; but the Father who sent me commanded me what to sayand what to speak,
And I know that his commandment is eternal life. Therefore, the things that I speak, just as the Father has said to me, so also do I speak.”50 and I know that his commands mean eternal life. And therefore what the Father has told me is what Ispeak.
