1 Now Israel, at that time, dwelt in Shittim, and the people were fornicating with the daughters of Moab,	1 E istava in quello tempo il popolo d'Israel in Setim; e peccarono colle figliuole di Moab.
2 who called them to their sacrifices. And they ate, and they adored their gods.	2 E loro gli chiamarono ai loro sacrificii; e loro mangiarono con loro, e adorarono il loro Iddio.
3 And Israel was initiated into Baal of Peor. And so the Lord, being angry,	3 E seguitarono Israel Beelfegor. E adirossi Iddio,

6 And behold, one of the sons of Israel entered, in the sight of his brothers, to a prostitute of Midian, within view of Moses and of all the crowd of the sons of Israel, who were weeping before the door of the tabernacle.	6 Ed ecco uno de' figliuoli d'Israel, in presenza de' suoi fratelli, entrò al bordello de' Madianiti, ve dendolo Moisè e tutto il popolo d'Israel, che piagnea dinanzi alle porte del tabernacolo.
7 And when Phinehas the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, had seen it, he rose up from the midst of the multitude, and, seizing a dagger,	7 Vedendolo Finees figliuolo di Eleazar, figliuolo di Aaron, levossi del mezzo della moltitudine; e preso lo coltello,

And the scourge ceased from among the sons of Israel.	8 andò di dietro a quello uomo d'Israel nel bordello; e trapassogli amendue insieme, l'uomo e la donna, nel luogo dove si genera. E cessò la piaga de' figliuoli d'Israel.
9 And there were slain twenty-four thousand men.	9 E uccisero XXIIII XIIII milia d'uomini.
10 And the Lord said to Moses:	10 Disse Iddio a Moisè:
11 “Phinehas the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, has averted my wrath from the sons of Israel. For he was moved against them by my zeal, so that I myself, in my zeal, might not wipe away the sons of Israel.	11 Finees figliuolo di Eleazaro, figliuolo di Aaron sacerdote, levoe l'ira mia dai figliuoli d'Israel; perciò che, per grande amore ch' egli m'avea, si levoe contro a loro, acciò ch' io non li facessi pe rire nello mio furore.
12 Because of this, say to him: Behold, I give to him the peace of my covenant.	12 E imperciò parlagli, e digli: Iddio ti darà parte della oblazione del tabernacolo,
13 And the covenant of the everlasting priesthood shall be as much for him as for his offspring. For he was zealous on behalf of his God, and he has made expiation for the wickedness of the sons of Israel.”	13 a te e alla tua progenie; e sarà patto sacerdotale in sempiterno; imperciò che amò lo suo Iddio, e levò la mia indignazione d'Israel.
14 Now the name of the Israelite man, who was killed with the Midianite woman, was Zimri the son of Salu, a leader from the kinship and tribe of Simeon.	14 Lo nome di quello israelita, che fue morto con quella Madianite, fu Zambri figliuolo di Salu, duca della gente della tribù di Simeon.
15 Moreover, the Midianite woman, who was put to death together with him, was called Cozbi the daughter of Zur, a most noble leader among the Midianites.	15 E la donna Madianita, la qual fu uccisa con lui insieme, avea nome Cozbi figliuola di Sur, principe nobile de' Madianiti.
16 And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying:	16 Parlo Iddio a Moisè, e disse:
17 “Let the Midianites perceive you as enemies, and strike them down,	17 Fate che vi senta l'oste de' Madianiti, e percotetegli;
18 for they, too, have behaved with hostility against you, and they have deceived you insidiously by means of the idol Peor, and by Cozbi, the daughter of a commander of Midian, their sister, who was struck down in the day of the scourge because of the sacrilege of Peor.”	18 perciò che loro vennero contro a voi per modo [ostile], e ingannaronvi per l'idolo di Fogor, e per Cozbi figliuola del duca de' Madianiti, sorella sua, la quale fue percossa, lo die della piaga, per lo sacrilegio di Fogor.
