The understanding of Asaph. O my people, attend to my law. Incline your ears to the words of my mouth.1 Attendete, popolo mio, la mia legge; inclinate le vostre orecchie nelle parole della bocca mia.
I will open my mouth in parables. I will speak about concepts that are from the beginning.2 Aprirò la mia bocca ne' proverbii; parlerò le proposizioni dal principio.
We have heard and known such great things, as our fathers have described to us.3 Quante cose noi avemo udite e conosciute; e li padri nostri a noi raccontorono.
These things have not been hidden from their sons in any generation: declaring the praises of the Lord, and his virtues, and the wonders that he has done.4 Non sono occultate da' loro figliuoli nell' altra generazione, narranti le laude del Signore, e sue virtù, e le sue maraviglie che ha fatto.
And he has received testimony with Jacob, and he has set a law within Israel. Such great things, he has commanded our fathers, so as to make these things known to their sons,5 Egli suscitò il testimonio in Iacob, e in Israel puose la legge.
so that another generation might know them, and so that the sons, who will be born and who will grow up, shall describe them to their sons.6 Quante cose comandò a' padri nostri, che manifestassero a' loro figliuoli, acciò che l' altra generazione conosca. Li figliuoli che nasceranno, e che si leveranno, racconteranno a' suoi figliuoli;
So then, may they put their hope in God, and may they not forget the works of God, and may they seek his commandments.7 acciò che pongano in Dio loro speranza, e non dismèntichino l'opere di Dio, e cerchino li comandamenti suoi.
May they not become like their fathers, a perverse and exasperating generation: a generation that does not straighten their heart and whose spirit is not trustworthy with God.8 E non siano fatti come loro padri, e generazione rea e perversa; generazione che non ha drizzato il suo cuore, e non è creduto esser con Iddio il spirito suo.
The sons of Ephraim, who bend and shoot the bow, have been turned back in the day of battle.9 Li figliuoli di Efrem, estendendo e mandando l'arco, nel dì della battaglia si convertirono.
They have not kept the covenant of God. And they were not willing to walk in his law.10 Non osservorone il testamento di Dio; e nella sua legge non volsero andare.
And they have been forgetful of his benefits, and of his miracle, which he revealed to them.11 E si dismenticorono delli suoi beneficii, e delle sue maraviglie mostrate a loro.
He performed miracles in the sight of their fathers, in the land of Egypt, in the field of Tanis.12 Fece maraviglie dinanzi loro padri nella terra di Egitto, nel campo di Tani.
He broke the sea and he led them through. And he stationed the waters, as if in a vessel.13 (Ma) aperse il mare, e condusse quelli; e raunò le acque come nell' otre.
And he led them with a cloud by day, and with illumination by fire throughout the night.14 E menolli colla nube per il dì, e per tutta la notte con la illuminazione del fuoco.
He broke through the rock in the wasteland, and he gave them to drink, as if from the great abyss.15 Ruppe la pietra nel deserto; e detteli l'acqua, come nel grande abisso.
He brought forth water from the rock, and he conducted the waters, as if they were rivers.16 E trasse l'acqua dalla pietra; e menò le acque come fiume.
And yet, they continued to sin against him. In a waterless place, they provoked the Most High with resentment.17 E ancora si misero a peccare contra luì; e commossero l' Altissimo nell' ira nella via delle acque.
And they tempted God in their hearts, by asking for food according to their desires.18 E tentorono Iddio nel suo cuore, domandando cibi a loro anime.
And they spoke badly about God. They said, “Would God be able to prepare a table in the desert?19 E hanno sparlato contra Iddio; dissero : adunque potrà Iddio preparare la mensa nel deserto?
He struck the rock, and so waters flowed and the torrents flooded, but would even he be able to provide bread, or provide a table, for his people?”20 Però che percosse la pietra, e uscirono l'acque, e gli fiumi si sparsero, adunque potrà dare etiam il pane, ovver apparecchiare la mensa al suo popolo?
Therefore, the Lord heard, and he was dismayed, and a fire was kindled within Jacob, and an anger ascended into Israel.21 E però udì il Signore, e prolungò; è il fuoco acceso in Iacob, e l'ira entrò in Israel.
For they neither put their trust in God, nor did they hope in his salvation.22 Per che non credettero in Dio, e non sperorono in la salute sua.
And he commanded the clouds from above, and he opened the doors of heaven.23 E comandò alle nubi di sopra, e aperse le porte del cielo.
And he rained down manna upon them to eat, and he gave them the bread of heaven.24 E (allora) piovette la manna da mangiare, e detteli il pane del cielo.
Man ate the bread of Angels. He sent them provisions in abundance.25 Mangiò l' uomo il pane di angeli; e dètte loro cibi in abbondanza.
He transferred the south wind from heaven, and, in his virtue, he brought in the Southwest wind.26 Mandò dal cielo il vento austro, e nella sua virtù mostrò l'africo.
And he rained down flesh upon them, as if it were dust, and feathered birds, as if they were the sand of the sea.27 E piovette sopra loro le carni come polvere, e li uccelli con penne a modo di arena di mare.
And they fell down in the midst of their camp, encircling their tabernacles.28 E cascorono in mezzo de' loro alloggiamenti, e appresso loro tabernacoli.
And they ate until they were greatly satisfied, and he brought to them according to their desires.29 E mangiorono, e satolloronsi molto; e compierono loro desiderio, e non furono ingannati da quello.
They were not cheated out of what they wanted. Their food was still in their mouth,30 Ancora nella loro bocca erano loro cibi; e l'ira di Dio venne sopra quelli.
and then the wrath of God came upon them. And he slew the fat ones among them, and he impeded the elect of Israel.31 E uccise loro ingrassati, e impacciò li eletti d' Israel.
In all these things, they continued to sin, and they were not trustworthy with his miracles.32 In tutte queste cose ancora peccorono; e non credettero alle sue maraviglie.
And their days faded away into vanity, and their years with haste.33 E nella vanità vennero meno loro giorni, e' loro anni mancorono presto.
When he slew them, then they sought him. And they returned, and they drew near to him in the early morning.34 Quando li uccideva, cercavano lui; e ritornavano, e per tempo a lui venivano.
And they were mindful that God is their helper and that the Most High God is their redeemer.35 E arricordaronsi che Iddio è loro aiuto, e l'eccelso Iddio è loro redentore.
And they chose him with their mouth, and then they lied to him with their tongue.36 E mostronno d' amarlo con loro bocca, e colla sua lingua a lui mentirono.
For their heart was not upright with him, nor have they been living faithfully in his covenant.37 Ma loro cuore non era con lui dritto; e non sono trovati fedeli nel suo testamento.
Yet he is merciful, and he will pardon their sins. And he will not destroy them. And he has abundantly turned aside his own wrath. And he did not enflame his wrath entirely.38 Ma egli è misericordioso; e farassi propizio a' loro peccati, e non li distruggerà. E accrescette, acciò levasse l'ira sua; e non accese ogni ira sua.
And he remembered that they are flesh: with a spirit that goes forth and does not return.39 E ricordossi che sono carne; spirito andante e non ritornante.
How often did they provoke him in the desert and stir him to wrath in a waterless place?40 Quante volte adirorono quello nel deserto? commossero lui in ira nel luogo arido?
And they turned back and tempted God, and they exasperated the Holy One of Israel.41 E convertiti tentorono Iddio; e adirorono il santo d'Israel.
They did not remember his hand, in the day that he redeemed them from the hand of the one troubling them.42 Non si sono ricordati della sua mano, nel dì nel quale ricomperolli della mano de' tribulanti'
Thus, he positioned his signs in Egypt and his wonders in the field of Tanis.43 come puose li segni suoi in Egitto, e sue maraviglie nel campo [di] Tani.
And he turned their rivers into blood, along with their rain showers, so that they could not drink.44 E convertitte loro fiumi in sangue e loro pioggie, per che non bevessero.
He sent among them the common fly, and it devoured them, and the frog, and it scattered them.45 Mandò in quelli le mosche canine, e mangiolli; le rane, e gli dissipò.
And he gave up their fruits to mold and their labors to the locust.46 E alla brina dètte loro frutti, e loro fatiche alla locusta.
And he slew their vineyards with hail and their mulberry trees with severe frost.47 E colla tempesta uccise loro vigne, è colla brina loro mori.
And he delivered their cattle to the hail and their possessions to fire.48 E dètte loro bestiame alla tempesta, e loro possessione al fuoco.
And he sent the wrath of his indignation among them: indignation and wrath and tribulation, sent forth by evil angels.49 In loro mandò l'ira del suo isdegno; lo isdegno, l'ira e tribulazione mandò per gli mali angeli.
He made way for the path of his anger. He did not spare their souls from death. And he enclosed their beasts of burden in death.50 Fece le vie all' andamento della sua ira, non perdonò alla morte di loro anime; e concluse nella morte loro bestiame.
And he struck all the first-born in the land of Egypt: the first-fruits of all their labor in the tabernacles of Ham.51 E uccise ogni primogenito nella terra di Egitto; le primizie di ogni loro fatica ne' tabernacoli di Cam.
And he took away his own people like sheep, and he led them through the wilderness like a flock.52 E menò fuori il suo popolo come pecore; e come capre per il deserto.
And he led them out in hope, and they did not fear. And the sea covered their enemies.53 E menolli in speranza, e non temettero; e il mare coperse loro nemici.
And he led them to the mountain of his sanctification: the mountain that his right hand had acquired. And he cast out the Gentiles before their face. And he divided their land by lot to them, with a line of distribution.54 E condusseli nel monte della sua santificazione, monte acquistato colla sua destra. E da loro faccia scacciò le genti; e per sorte divise loro [la] terra in parte di distribuzione.
And he caused the tribes of Israel to dwell in their tabernacles.55 E fece abitare in li loro tabernacoli le tribù d' Israel.
Yet they tempted and aggravated God Most High, and they did not keep his testaments.56 E tentorono e adirorono l' Altissimo Iddio; e non osservorono li suoi testimoni.
And they turned themselves aside, and they did not serve the covenant. In the same manner as their fathers, they were turned backwards, like a crooked bow.57 E partironsi, e non servorono il patto; come loro padri, convertironsi nell' iniquo arco.
They impelled him to anger on their hills, and they provoked him to rivalry with their graven images.58 Nelli suoi colli il commossero in ira; nelli suoi idoli il provocorono a isdegno.
God listened, and he spurned them, and he reduced Israel greatly, almost to nothing.59 Intese Iddio, e sprezzolli, e a niente recò Israel.
And he rejected the tabernacle of Shiloh, his tabernacle where he had dwelt among men.60 E scacciò il tabernacolo di Silo, il suo tabernacolo, dove abitò nelli uomini.
And he delivered their virtue into captivity, and their beauty into the hands of the enemy.61 E dette loro virtù in prigionia, e loro bellezza nelle mani dell' inimico.
And he enclosed his people with the sword, and he spurned his inheritance.62 Concluse il suo popolo nel coltello; e sprezzò la sua eredità.
Fire consumed their young men, and their virgins were not lamented.63 Loro giovani, mangiolli il fuoco; e loro vergini non sono lamentate.
Their priests fell by the sword, and their widows did not weep.64 Loro sacerdoti cascorono nel coltello; e loro vedove non [si] piangevano.
And the Lord was awaked, as if out of sleep, and like a powerful man impaired by wine.65 E risvegliossi il Signore come quello che dorme, come potente inebriato di vino.
And he struck his enemies on the back. He gave them over to everlasting disgrace.66 E percosse li suoi nemici da drieto; dètte quelli in obbrobrio sempiterno.
And he rejected the tabernacle of Joseph, and he did not choose the tribe of Ephraim.67 E scacciò il tabernacolo di Iosef; e non elesse la tribù di Efraim.
But he chose the tribe of Judah: mount Zion, which he loved.68 Ma elesse la tribù di Giuda, monte di Sion da lui amato.
And he built up his sanctuary, like a single-horned beast, in the land that he founded for all ages.69 Ed edificò il suo luogo santo, come unicorno, nella terra ch' egli ha fondato IN SECULA.
And he chose his servant David, and he took him from the flocks of the sheep: he received him from following the ewes with their young,70 Ed elesse David servo suo, e tolselo dopo le mandrie delle pecore; dopo le pregnanti tolse lui.
in order to pasture Jacob his servant and Israel his inheritance.71 Nutrica Iacob suo servo, e Israel sua eredità.
And he fed them with the innocence of his heart. And he led them with the understanding of his hands.72 E pascette quelli nella innocenza del suo cuore; e nelli intendimenti delle loro mani guidò loro.
