Exodus 20

1 And the Lord spoke all these words:	1 Dio pronunciò tutte queste parole:
2 “I am the Lord your God, who led you away from the land of Egypt, out of the house of servitude.	2 «Io sono il Signore, tuo Dio, che ti ho fatto uscire dalla terra d’Egitto, dalla condizione servile:
3 You shall not have strange gods before me.	3 Non avrai altri dèi di fronte a me.
4 You shall not make for yourself a graven image, nor a likeness of anything that is in heaven above or on earth below, nor of those things which are in the waters under the earth.	4 Non ti farai idolo né immagine alcuna di quanto è lassù nel cielo, né di quanto è quaggiù sulla terra, né di quanto è nelle acque sotto la terra.
5 You shall not adore them, nor shall you worship them. I am the Lord your God: strong, zealous, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the sons to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me,	5 Non ti prostrerai davanti a loro e non li servirai. Perché io, il Signore, tuo Dio, sono un Dio geloso, che punisce la colpa dei padri nei figli fino alla terza e alla quarta generazione, per coloro che mi odiano,
6 and showing mercy to thousands of those who love me and keep my precepts.	6 ma che dimostra la sua bontà fino a mille generazioni, per quelli che mi amano e osservano i miei comandamenti.
7 You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain. For the Lord will not hold harmless one who takes the name of the Lord his God falsely.	7 Non pronuncerai invano il nome del Signore, tuo Dio, perché il Signore non lascia impunito chi pronuncia il suo nome invano.
8 Remember that you are to sanctify the day of the Sabbath.	8 Ricòrdati del giorno del sabato per santificarlo.
9 For six days, you will work and accomplish all your tasks.	9 Sei giorni lavorerai e farai ogni tuo lavoro;
10 But the seventh day is the Sabbath of the Lord your God. You shall not do any work in it: you and your son and your daughter, your male servant and your female servant, your beast and the newcomer who is within your gates.	10 ma il settimo giorno è il sabato in onore del Signore, tuo Dio: non farai alcun lavoro, né tu né tuo figlio né tua figlia, né il tuo schiavo né la tua schiava, né il tuo bestiame, né il forestiero che dimora presso di te.
11 For in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, and the sea, and all the things that are in them, and so he rested on the seventh day. For this reason, the Lord has blessed the day of the Sabbath and sanctified it.	11 Perché in sei giorni il Signore ha fatto il cielo e la terra e il mare e quanto è in essi, ma si è riposato il settimo giorno. Perciò il Signore ha benedetto il giorno del sabato e lo ha consacrato.
12 Honor your father and your mother, so that you may have a long life upon the land, which the Lord your God will give to you.	12 Onora tuo padre e tua madre, perché si prolunghino i tuoi giorni nel paese che il Signore, tuo Dio, ti dà.
13 You shall not murder.	13 Non ucciderai.
14 You shall not commit adultery.	14 Non commetterai adulterio.
15 You shall not steal.	15 Non ruberai.
16 You shall not speak false testimony against your neighbor.	16 Non pronuncerai falsa testimonianza contro il tuo prossimo.
17 You shall not covet the house of your neighbor; neither shall you desire his wife, nor male servant, nor female servant, nor ox, nor donkey, nor anything that is his.”	17 Non desidererai la casa del tuo prossimo. Non desidererai la moglie del tuo prossimo, né il suo schiavo né la sua schiava, né il suo bue né il suo asino, né alcuna cosa che appartenga al tuo prossimo».
18 Then all the people considered the voices, and the lights, and the sound of the trumpet, and the smoking mountain. And being terrified and struck with fear, they stood at a distance,	18 Tutto il popolo percepiva i tuoni e i lampi, il suono del corno e il monte fumante. Il popolo vide, fu preso da tremore e si tenne lontano.
19 saying to Moses: “Speak to us, and we will listen. Let not the Lord speak to us, lest perhaps we may die.”	19 Allora dissero a Mosè: «Parla tu a noi e noi ascolteremo; ma non ci parli Dio, altrimenti moriremo!».
20 And Moses said to the people: “Do not be afraid. For God came in order to test you, and so that the dread of him might be with you, and you would not sin.”	20 Mosè disse al popolo: «Non abbiate timore: Dio è venuto per mettervi alla prova e perché il suo timore sia sempre su di voi e non pecchiate».
21 And the people stood far away. But Moses approached toward the mist, in which was God.	21 Il popolo si tenne dunque lontano, mentre Mosè avanzò verso la nube oscura dove era Dio.
22 Thereafter, the Lord said to Moses: “This you shall say to the sons of Israel: You have seen that I have spoken to you from heaven.	22 Il Signore disse a Mosè: «Così dirai agli Israeliti: “Voi stessi avete visto che vi ho parlato dal cielo!
23 You shall not make gods of silver, nor shall you make for yourselves gods of gold.	23 Non farete dèi d’argento e dèi d’oro accanto a me: non ne farete per voi!
24 You shall make an altar from the earth for me, and you shall offer upon it your holocausts and peace-offerings, your sheep and oxen, in every place where the memory of my name shall be. I will come to you, and I will bless you.	24 Farai per me un altare di terra e sopra di esso offrirai i tuoi olocausti e i tuoi sacrifici di comunione, le tue pecore e i tuoi buoi; in ogni luogo dove io vorrò far ricordare il mio nome, verrò a te e ti benedirò.
25 And if you make an altar of stone for me, you shall not build it from cut stones; for if you lift up a tool over it, it will be defiled.	25 Se tu farai per me un altare di pietra, non lo costruirai con pietra tagliata, perché, usando la tua lama su di essa, tu la renderesti profana.
26 You shall not ascend by steps to my altar, lest your nakedness be revealed.”	26 Non salirai sul mio altare per mezzo di gradini, perché là non si scopra la tua nudità”.
