Esther 13

1 “Artaxerxes, the great king from India all the way to Ethiopia, to the generals and leaders of the one hundred twenty-seven provinces that obey our command: greetings, he says.	1 Lo re grande Artaserse, dall' India persino alla Etiopia, di cento e ventisette provincie, a tutti li prìncipi e li duchi, li quali sono sotto il suo imperio, manda salute.
2 In arrogance, many have abused the goodness of leaders and the honor that has been bestowed on them,	2 Conciosia che io sia signore di molte genti, e abbi soggiogato tutto il mondo al mio comandamento, non ho però voluto usare male la grandezza della mia potenza, ma ho voluto governare i miei sudditi con clemenza e mansuetudine, acciò che senza alcuno spavento passando la sua vita, potessero adempire i suoi desiderii, nelle cose di questo mondo, con pace.
3 and they strive, not only to oppress the king’s subjects, but, not acting according to the glory given to them, set in motion a plan to ambush those very ones who gave it.	3 E dimandando io dalli miei consiglieri, a che modo io potessi fare questo, uno di costoro, il quale eccedeva tutti in sapienza e in fede, ed era il secondo dopo il re, chiamato Aman,
4 Neither are they content to withhold thanks for benefits and to violate in themselves the laws of humanity, but they also think they are able to escape from every sentence of the sifting judgment of God.	4 mi significò esser uno popolo disperso in tutte le terre del mondo, lo qual vive con leggi nuove le quali sono contro la consuetudine di tutte le genti, lo qual disprezzava li comandamenti del re, e corrompeva con la sua divisione la concordia di tutte le nazioni.
5 And they rush forth in such insanity that they attempt to subvert by filthy lies those who carefully fulfill the offices delegated to them and so perform everything that is deserving of the praise of all.	5 E avendo noi inteso, e vedendo una gente ribelle usare leggi perverse contro a tutte le generazioni degli uomini, e contrafare alli nostri comandamenti, e turbar la pace de' nostri sudditi, e delle nostre provincie la concordia,
6 Meanwhile, they craftily deceive by fraud the ears of single-minded leaders, and they judge others according to their own nature.	6 facemmo comandare che tutti quelli i quali avrà dimostrato Aman, lo qual è sopra tutte le nostre provincie, e la seconda persona dopo il re, e anco il quale amiamo come padre, siano uccisi dalli suoi inimici con le loro mogli e figliuoli, e a nullo si abbi misericordia; e questo sia lo quartodecimo dì del duodecimo mese chiamato Adar (cioè marzo) dell' anno presente;
7 These things are proven both from the ancient histories and from those things which happen daily: how the zeal of kings can be corrupted by the evil suggestions of such persons.	7 acciò che questi mali uomini essendo in uno dì tutti uccisi, sia restituita la pace a tutto il mio imperio, la qual loro aveano turbata. Persino a qui è lo esemplare della epistola. E questo che sëguita, dopo questo, dove si legge; E andando Mardocheo, fece tutte quelle cose che li comandò Ester. Nientedimeno non si trova in Ebreo, e non si trova appo alcuno interprete.
8 Therefore, we will make provision for the peace of all the provinces.	8 Mardocheo (però ch' era Giudeo) pregò Iddio, il quale era suo aiutatore e suo difensore.
9 Neither should you think, if we change our orders, that they come from a fickle mind, but that we draw conclusions from the quality and necessity of the times, just as the expediency of the public good demands.	9 E disse: Signore Iddio onnipotente, chè nel tuo cospetto sono poste tutte le cose, e niuno puote resistere alla tua volontà, se tu [hai] deliberato di camparci da questo giudicio, (noi siamo liberati).
10 And, so that you may more clearly understand what we are saying: Haman the son of Hammedatha, a Macedonian both in mind and ancestry, and foreign to Persian blood, and with his cruelty contaminating our piety, was accepted by us as a sojourner.	10 Tu facesti il cielo e la terra, e ciò che dentro ci abita.
11 And our humanity proved to be so great towards him that he was called our father and was adored by all as second only to the king.	11 Iddio se' d' ogni cosa, e niuno puote resistere alla tua potenza.
12 But he was so filled with arrogance as to strive to deprive us of our kingdom and our life.	12 E niuna cosa t'è nascosta, e sai bene che non per superbia nè per contenzione, nè per altro desiderio di vanagloria (nè per mala volontà), io non volsi adorare Aman superbo.
13 For example, with certain strange and unheard of machinations, he sought the death of Mordecai, whose faith and kindness kept us alive, and Esther, the partner of our kingdom, and all their people.	13 Però ch' io sono bene apparecchiato, per la salute del popolo mio, di basciarli le vestigie dei piedi (non tanto adorarlo).
14 This he planned so that, after they were executed, he might work treason against us in our solitude and transfer the kingdom of the Persians to the Macedonians.	14 Ma temetti di non offendere te, che dovendo adorar te, io adorassi gli uomini; però ch' io sono bene acconcio di giammai adorare, se non solo te.
15 But we, having been resolved to ruin in death the mortal Jews, discovered no fault within them, but on the contrary, they use just laws	15 Imperciò, Signore Iddio di Abraam, libera il popolo tuo delle mani di costoro nostri nimici, i quali ci vogliono uccidere, e (che) questa tua eredità vogliono consumare.
16 and are sons of the highest and greatest and ever-living God, by whose kindness the kingdom was handed down both to our fathers and to us, and is cared for even unto this day.	16 Non abbandonare questa tua particella, la quale tu traesti dello Egitto.
17 Therefore, you should understand to be null and void those letters that he administered under our name.	17 Priegoti, Signore, che tu esaudischi la mia orazione, e sia tu in adiutorio a questa tua eredità; e questa amaritudine (la quale noi aspettiamo) convertila tu in allegrezza, acciò che vivendo possiamo laudare il tuo nome; e non volere serrare le bocche di coloro che sempre ti lodano.
18 With all the peoples, cities, and provinces, wherever the king’s orders arrived, there was wonderful rejoicing, banquets and feasts, and a solemn holy day, so much so that many of the other nations joined themselves to their religious practices and ceremonies. For a great fear of the name of the Jews had overcome them all.	18 E tutto il popolo d' Israel, con eguale mente e prego, chiamò al Signore Iddio; però che erano in pericolo della morte.
