CATHOLIC PUBLIC DOMAINLXX
Then, upon hearing these things, the sons of Israel, who dwelt in the land of Judah, were very afraid before his face.1 και ηκουσαν οι υιοι ισραηλ οι κατοικουντες εν τη ιουδαια παντα οσα εποιησεν ολοφερνης τοις εθνεσιν ο αρχιστρατηγος ναβουχοδονοσορ βασιλεως ασσυριων και ον τροπον εσκυλευσεν παντα τα ιερα αυτων και εδωκεν αυτα εις αφανισμον
Trembling and horror invaded their senses, lest he should do the same thing to Jerusalem and to the temple of the Lord that he had done to other cities and their temples.2 και εφοβηθησαν σφοδρα σφοδρα απο προσωπου αυτου και περι ιερουσαλημ και του ναου κυριου θεου αυτων εταραχθησαν
And they sent into all of Samaria, and by an indirect route even to Jericho, and they seized in advance all the tops of the mountains.3 οτι προσφατως ησαν αναβεβηκοτες εκ της αιχμαλωσιας και νεωστι πας ο λαος συνελελεκτο της ιουδαιας και τα σκευη και το θυσιαστηριον και ο οικος εκ της βεβηλωσεως ηγιασμενα ην
And they surrounded their villages with walls, and they gathered together grain in preparation for the fight.4 και απεστειλαν εις παν οριον σαμαρειας και κωνα και βαιθωρων και βελμαιν και ιεριχω και εις χωβα και αισωρα και τον αυλωνα σαλημ
And then Eliachim the priest wrote to all who were opposite Esdrelon, which is opposite the face of the great plain near Dothain, and to all whom he would be able to reach through a passable way:5 και προκατελαβοντο πασας τας κορυφας των ορεων των υψηλων και ετειχισαν τας εν αυτοις κωμας και παρεθεντο εις επισιτισμον εις παρασκευην πολεμου οτι προσφατως ην τα πεδια αυτων τεθερισμενα
that they should hold the ascents of the mountains, through which there might be any passage able to reach Jerusalem, and that they should keep watch where the passage was narrow, wherever possible, between the mountains.6 και εγραψεν ιωακιμ ο ιερευς ο μεγας ος ην εν ταις ημεραις εν ιερουσαλημ τοις κατοικουσι βαιτυλουα και βαιτομεσθαιμ η εστιν απεναντι εσδρηλων κατα προσωπον του πεδιου του πλησιον δωθαιμ
And the sons of Israel did just as Eliachim, the priest of the Lord, had appointed them.7 λεγων διακατασχειν τας αναβασεις της ορεινης οτι δι' αυτων ην η εισοδος εις την ιουδαιαν και ην ευχερως διακωλυσαι αυτους προσβαινοντας στενης της προσβασεως ουσης επ' ανδρας τους παντας δυο
And all the people cried out to the Lord with great urgency, and they humbled their souls with fastings, and prayers, both they and their wives.8 και εποιησαν οι υιοι ισραηλ καθα συνεταξεν αυτοις ιωακιμ ο ιερευς ο μεγας και η γερουσια παντος δημου ισραηλ οι εκαθηντο εν ιερουσαλημ
And the priests clothed themselves with haircloths, and they prostrated the little children opposite the face of the temple of the Lord, and they covered the altar of the Lord with haircloth.9 και ανεβοησαν πας ανηρ ισραηλ προς τον θεον εν εκτενεια μεγαλη και εταπεινωσαν τας ψυχας αυτων εν εκτενεια μεγαλη
And they cried out to the Lord God of Israel with one accord, lest their children should be given over as prey, and their wives into distribution, and their cities into extermination, and their holy things into defilement, and so that they might not become the disgrace of the Gentiles.10 αυτοι και αι γυναικες αυτων και τα νηπια αυτων και τα κτηνη αυτων και πας παροικος και μισθωτος και αργυρωνητος αυτων επεθεντο σακκους επι τας οσφυας αυτων
Then Eliachim, the high priest of the Lord, traveled all around Israel, and he was talking to them,11 και πας ανηρ ισραηλ και γυνη και τα παιδια οι κατοικουντες εν ιερουσαλημ επεσον κατα προσωπον του ναου και εσποδωσαντο τας κεφαλας αυτων και εξετειναν τους σακκους αυτων κατα προσωπον κυριου
saying: “Know that the Lord will heed your prayers, if you continue to persevere in fastings and prayers in the sight of the Lord.12 και το θυσιαστηριον σακκω περιεβαλον και εβοησαν προς τον θεον ισραηλ ομοθυμαδον εκτενως του μη δουναι εις διαρπαγην τα νηπια αυτων και τας γυναικας εις προνομην και τας πολεις της κληρονομιας αυτων εις αφανισμον και τα αγια εις βεβηλωσιν και ονειδισμον επιχαρμα τοις εθνεσιν
Recall that Moses, the servant of the Lord, overcame Amalek, who trusted in his own strength, and in his power, and in his army, and in his bronze shields, and in his swift chariots, and in his horsemen. He overcame him, not by fighting with iron, but by pleading with holy prayers.13 και εισηκουσεν κυριος της φωνης αυτων και εισειδεν την θλιψιν αυτων και ην ο λαος νηστευων ημερας πλειους εν παση τη ιουδαια και ιερουσαλημ κατα προσωπον των αγιων κυριου παντοκρατορος
So will it be with all the enemies of Israel, if you persevere in this work that you have begun.”14 και ιωακιμ ο ιερευς ο μεγας και παντες οι παρεστηκοτες ενωπιον κυριου ιερεις και οι λειτουργουντες κυριω σακκους περιεζωσμενοι τας οσφυας αυτων προσεφερον την ολοκαυτωσιν του ενδελεχισμου και τας ευχας και τα εκουσια δοματα του λαου
Therefore, by this exhortation and his prayer to the Lord, they continued in the sight of the Lord,15 και ην σποδος επι τας κιδαρεις αυτων και εβοων προς κυριον εκ πασης δυναμεως εις αγαθον επισκεψασθαι παν οικον ισραηλ
so that even those who offered holocausts to the Lord, offered the sacrifices to the Lord girded with haircloths, and there were ashes upon their heads.
And they all begged God with their whole heart, that he would visit his people Israel.
