1 Then the kings as well as the princes of the provinces sent their emissaries from all of the cities: from Syria, particularly Mesopotamia, and Syria Sobal, and Libya as well as Cilicia. These, upon coming to Holofernes, said:	1 Allora i re, e i principi di tutte le città e provincie, vale a dire della Siria della Mesopotamia, e della Siria di Sobal, e della Libia, e della Cilicia spedirono i suoi ambasciatori, i quali giunti davanti ad Oloferne dissero:
2 “Let your indignation concerning us cease. For it is better for us to live in service to Nebuchadnezzar, the great king, and to become subject to you, rather than to die, even though we may have to suffer our condemnation into the annihilation of slavery.	2 Si plachi il tuo sdegno in verso di noi, perocchè meglio è, che noi vivendo siamo servi del gran re Nabuchodonosor, e dipendenti da te, che provare colla morte, e colla erdizione nostra, la calamità della nostra schiavitù.
3 All our cities and all our possessions, all mountains, and hills, and fields, and herds of cattle, and flocks of sheep, and goats, and horses, and camels, and all our resources and families are in your sight.	3 Tutte le nostre città, tutte le nostre possessioni, tutti i monti, e i colli, e i campi, e gli armenti de bovi, e i branchi delle pecore, e delle capre, e i cavalli, e i cammelli, e tutte le nostre facoltà, e le nostre famiglie sono nelle tue mani:
4 Let all that we have be subject to your law.	4 Sieno tutte le cose nostre a tua disposizione.
5 We, and our sons, are your servants.	5 Noi, e i nostri figliuoli siamo tuoi servi.
6 Come to us as a peaceful lord, and use our service, just as it pleases you.”	6 Vieni a noi Signore pacifico, e impiega i servigi nostri come a te piace.
7 Then he descended from the mountains with horsemen, in great power, and he took charge of every city and of every inhabitant of the land.	7 Allora egli scese da' monti colla cavalleria, e con grande esercito, e si fece padrone di tutte le città, e di tutti gli abitanti del paese.
8 And, from all the cities, he took for himself auxiliaries: strong men and well-chosen for war.	8 E di tutte quelle città assoldò gli uomini robusti, e buoni per la guerra,
9 And such a dread lay upon those provinces, that the leading and honored inhabitants of all the cities, together with the people, went out to meet him at his arrival.	9 E tanto fu lo spavento, che invase quelle provincie, che gli abitanti di tutte le città,e i principi, e le persone più distinte al suo arrivo gli andavano incontro insieme coi popoli;
10 They received him with garlands and lamps; they were led by choirs with timbrels and flutes.	10 Lo riceveano coronati con lampane accese, ballando al suono di timpani, e di trombe.
11 Yet, not even by doing these things were they able to mitigate the ferocity of his chest.	11 Ma per quanto facessero non poterono ammansire la fierezza di quel core.
12 For he both destroyed their cities and cut down their sacred groves.	12 Perocchè egli e distrusse le loro città, e recise i loro boschetti;
13 For king Nebuchadnezzar had instructed him to exterminate all the gods of the earth, evidently so that he alone might be called ‘god’ by those nations which were able to be subjugated by the power of Holofernes.	13 Perocchè il re Nabucodonosor gli avea comandato di sterminare tutti gli dei della terra, come quegli che voleva egli solo essere chiamato dio da quelle nazioni, le quali fossero soggiogate dal valor di Oloferne.
14 But when he had passed through Syria Sobal, and all of Apamea, and all Mesopotamia, he came to the Idumeans in the land of Gibeah.	14 E questi,scorsa la Siria di Sobal, e tutta l'Apamea, e tutta la Mesopotamia, giunse nell'Idumea nella terra di Gabaa.
15 And he took their cities, and he sat there for thirty days, during which days he instructed all the troops of his army to regroup.	15 E prese quelle città, e ivi si fermò trenta giorni, nel qual tempo ordinò, che riunissero tutte le sue forze.
