1 Then Judith said to all the people: “Hear me, brothers. Suspend this head over our walls.	1 Judith leur dit: "Ecoutez-moi, frères. Prenez cette tête, suspendez-la au faîte de vos remparts.
2 And, as soon as the sun rises, let everyone take up his weapons and go out to attack, not going down all the way, but only to seem as if making an assault.	2 Puis, quand l'aube aura paru et que le soleil sera levé sur la terre, prenez chacun vos armes et quetout homme valide sorte de la ville. Sur cette troupe établissez un chef, tout comme si vous vouliez descendredans la plaine vers le poste avancé des Assyriens. Mais ne descendez pas.
3 Then the scouts will have to hurry to awaken their leader for the fight.	3 Les Assyriens prendront leur équipement, gagneront leur camp et éveilleront les chefs de leurarmée. On se précipitera alors vers la tente d'Holopherne et on ne le trouvera pas. La frayeur s'emparera d'eux etils fuiront devant vous.
4 And when their commanders rush into the tabernacle of Holofernes, and they find his headless body wallowing in his blood, fear will fall over them.	4 Vous, et tous ceux qui habitent dans le territoire d'Israël, vous n'aurez plus qu'à les poursuivre et àles abattre dans leur retraite.
5 And when you realize that they are fleeing, go after them in security, for the Lord will crush them under your feet.”	5 "Mais avant d'agir ainsi, appelez-moi Achior l'Ammonite, pour qu'il voie et reconnaisse lecontempteur de la maison d'Israël, celui qui l'avait envoyé parmi nous comme un homme voué d'avance à lamort."
6 Then Achior, seeing the power that the God of Israel had wrought, left behind the rituals of the Gentiles. He believed in God, and he circumcised the flesh of his foreskin, and he was placed among the people of Israel, and so were all the succession of his kindred, even until this present day.	6 On fit donc venir Achior de chez Ozias. Sitôt arrivé, à la vue de la tête d'Holopherne que tenait undes hommes de l'assemblée du peuple, il tomba la face contre terre et s'évanouit.
7 And soon, at the rising of day, they suspended the head of Holofernes above the walls, and every man took up his weapons, and they went out with a great uproar and howling.	7 On le releva. Il se jeta alors aux pieds de Judith et, se prosternant devant elle, s'écria: "Bénie sois-tudans toutes les tentes de Juda et parmi tous les peuples; ceux qui entendront prononcer ton nom seront saisisd'effroi!
8 When the scouts saw this, they rushed to the tent of Holofernes.	8 Et maintenant dis-moi ce que tu as fait durant ces jours." Et Judith lui raconta, au milieu de tout lepeuple, tout ce qu'elle avait fait depuis le jour de sa sortie de Béthulie jusqu'au moment où elle parlait.
9 Moreover, those who were in the tent came and made a loud noise before the entrance to the bedchamber, hoping to awaken him by an attempt at skillful noise-making, not by intruding on him, so that Holofernes might be roused from sleep.	9 Quand elle se fut tue, le peuple poussa de puissantes acclamations et emplit la ville de crisd'allégresse.
10 For no one dared to knock, or to open and enter, the bedchamber of the powerful leader of the Assyrians.	10 Achior, voyant tout ce qu'avait fait le Dieu d'Israël, crut fermement en lui, se fit circoncire et futadmis définitivement dans la maison d'Israël.
11 But when his commanders and tribunes had arrived, with all the chiefs of the army of the king of the Assyrians, they said to the chamberlains:	11 Quand l'aube parut, les gens de Béthulie pendirent la tête d'Holopherne au rempart. Chacun prit sesarmes et tous sortirent par bandes sur les pentes de la montagne.
12 “Enter and awaken him, for the mice have come out of their holes, intending to challenge us to fight.”	12 Ce que voyant, les Assyriens dépêchèrent des messagers vers leurs chefs qui, à leur tour, serendirent chez les stratèges, les chiliarques et tous leurs officiers.
13 Then Vagao, entering his bedchamber, stood before the curtain, and he made a clapping noise with his hands. For he suspected that he was sleeping with Judith.	13 On parvint ainsi jusqu'à la tente d'Holopherne. "Eveille notre maître, dit-on à son intendant. Cesesclaves ont osé descendre vers nous et nous attaquer pour se faire complètement massacrer."
14 But when, with attentiveness, he perceived no motion of anyone reclining, he approached the curtain. And lifting it up, he saw the dead body of Holofernes, without a head, lying on the ground, soaked in his own blood. He cried out with a loud voice and weeping, and he tore his garments.	14 Bagoas entra donc. Il frappa des mains devant le rideau de la tente, pensant qu'Holopherne dormaitavec Judith.
15 And he entered the tent of Judith and did not find her. And he ran out to the people,	15 Mais comme personne ne semblait rien entendre, il ouvrit et pénétra dans la chambre à coucher etle trouva jeté sur le seuil, mort, la tête coupée.
16 and he said: “One Hebrew woman has caused confusion in the house of Nebuchadnezzar the king. For behold, Holofernes lies on the ground, and his head is not with him.”	16 Il poussa alors un grand cri, pleura, sanglota, hurla et déchira ses vêtements,
17 Now when the leaders of the army of the Assyrians had heard this, they all tore their garments, and an intolerable fear and trembling fell over them, and their minds were greatly disturbed.	17 puis pénétra dans la tente où logeait Judith et ne la trouva pas. Alors, s'élançant dans la foule, ilcria:
18 And there was an unprecedented outcry in the midst of their camp.	18 "Ah! les esclaves se sont rebellés! Une femme des Hébreux a couvert de honte la maison deNabuchodonosor. Holopherne gît à terre, décapité!"
	19 A ces mots les chefs de l'armée d'Assur, l'esprit complètement bouleversé, déchirèrent leurstuniques et firent retentir le camp de leurs cris et de leurs clameurs.
