CATHOLIC PUBLIC DOMAINSAGRADA BIBLIA
Tobit was from the tribe and city of Naphtali (which is in the upper parts of Galilee above Asher, after the way, which leads to the west, that has on its left the city of Sephet).1 Tobit, da tribo e da cidade de Neftali (situada na Galiléia superior, acima de Naasson, atrás do caminho do ocidente, tendo à esquerda a cidade de Sefet),
Although he had been taken captive in the days of Shalmaneser, the king of the Assyrians, even in such a situation as captivity, he did not desert the way of truth.2 foi levado para o cativeiro no tempo de Salmanasar, rei dos assírios. Embora cativo, ele não abandonou o caminho da verdade.
So then, every day, all that he was able to obtain, he bestowed on his fellow captive brothers, who were from his kindred.3 Tudo aquilo, de que podia dispor, distribuía cada dia a seus irmãos de raça, que partilhavam com ele sua sorte de cativo.
And, when he was among the youngest of any in the tribe of Naphtali, he showed not so much as any childish behavior in his work.4 Embora fosse ele o mais jovem da tribo de Neftali, seu proceder nada tinha de pueril.
And then, when all went to the golden calves which Jeroboam, king of Israel, had made, he alone fled from the company of them all.5 Por isso, enquanto todos eles iam adorar os bezerros de ouro que o rei de Israel, Jeroboão, tinha feito, só ele fugia da companhia de todos e
Yet he continued on to Jerusalem, to the temple of the Lord, and there he adored the Lord God of Israel, offering faithfully all his first-fruits and his tithes.6 dirigia-se ao templo do Senhor em Jerusalém, onde adorava o Senhor Deus de Israel, oferecendo fielmente as primícias e os dízimos de todos os seus bens.
So then, in the third year, he administered all his tithes to new converts and to new arrivals.7 De três em três anos, dava aos prosélitos e aos estrangeiros todo o seu dízimo.
These and similar such things, even as a boy, he observed according to the law of God.8 Esta e outras práticas semelhantes da lei de Deus, tinha observado desde a sua infância.
Truly, when he had become a man, he received as wife Anna of his own tribe, and he conceived a son by her, to whom he assigned his own name.9 Quando se tornou adulto, desposou uma mulher de sua tribo, chamada Ana, da qual teve um filho, a quem deu o nome de Tobias.
From his infancy, he taught him to fear God and to abstain from all sin.10 Ensinou-lhe desde a sua mais tenra idade a temer a Deus e a se abster de todo o pecado.
Therefore, when, during the captivity, he had arrived with his wife and son at the city of Nineveh, with all his tribe,11 Desse modo, quando chegou com sua mulher e seu filho, como cativo, no meio de sua tribo, à cidade de Nínive,
(even though they all ate from the foods of the Gentiles,) he guarded his soul and never was contaminated with their foods.12 embora todos os outros comessem dos alimentos dos pagãos, guardou sua alma pura, e jamais contraiu mancha alguma com seus alimentos.
And because he was mindful of the Lord with his whole heart, God gave him favor in the sight of Shalmaneser the king.13 E porque ele conservava com todo o seu coração a lembrança de Deus, Deus tornou-o simpático ao rei Salmanasar,
And he gave him the power to go wherever he would want, having the freedom to do whatever he wished.14 que o autorizou a ir aonde quisesse, e a fazer o que quer que lhe agradasse.
Therefore, he continued on to all who were in captivity, and he gave them helpful advice.15 Ele ia, pois, visitar todos os deportados e dava-lhes conselhos salutares.
But when he had arrived at Rages, a city of the Medes, he had ten talents of silver, from that which he had been given in honor by the king.16 Foi um dia a Ragés, cidade da Média, com dez talentos de prata que o rei lhe tinha dado.
And when, in the midst of the great tumult of his kindred, he saw the destitution of Gabael, who was from his tribe, he loaned him, under a written agreement, the aforementioned weight of silver.17 Encontrando entre a multidão dos seus compatriotas um homem de sua tribo, chamado Gabael, o qual se achava em dificuldades, deu-lhe a sobredita quantia de prata, mediante um recibo.
In truth, after a long time, Shalmaneser the king died, while Sennacherib his son reigned in his place, and he held a hatred for the sons of Israel.18 Passou o tempo; Salmanasar morreu e Senaquerib, seu filho, sucedeu-lhe no trono. Ora, Senaquerib odiava os israelitas.
Every day, Tobit traveled though all his own people, and he consoled them, and he distributed to each one as much as he could from his resources.19 Tobit ia diariamente visitar toda a sua parentela, consolava-a e distribuía dos seus bens a cada um, segundo as suas posses.
He nourished the hungry, and he supplied clothes to the naked, and he showed concern for the burial of the dead and of the slain.20 Alimentava os famintos, vestia os nus, e, com uma solicitude toda particular, sepultava os defuntos e os que tinham sido mortos.
And then, when king Sennacherib had returned from Judea, fleeing the scourge which God had caused all around him because of his blasphemy, and, being angry, he was slaughtering many from the sons of Israel, Tobit buried their bodies.21 Quando o rei Senaquerib, fugindo da Judéia ao castigo com que Deus o ferira por suas blasfêmias, mandou assassinar, na sua ira, um grande número de israelitas, Tobit sepultou os seus cadáveres.
And when it was reported to the king, he ordered him to be slain, and he took away all his belongings.22 Denunciaram-no ao rei, que o mandou matar e confiscou todos os seus bens.
In truth, Tobit, fleeing with nothing but his son and his wife, was able to remain hidden because many loved him.23 Tobit, porém, despojado de tudo, fugiu com seu filho e sua mulher e, como tinha muitos amigos, conseguiu permanecer oculto.
In truth, after forty-five days, the king was slain by his own sons,24 Ora, quarenta e cinco dias depois, o rei foi assassinado por seus filhos,
and Tobit was able to return to his house, and all his resources were restored to him.25 e Tobit voltou para a sua casa; e foram-lhe restituídos todos os seus bens.
