And the seventh month had arrived. Now the sons of Israel were in their cities. And all the people were gathered together, like one man, in the street which is before the water gate. And they spoke to Ezra the scribe, so that he would bring the book of the law of Moses, which the Lord had instructed to Israel.1 Tout le peuple se rassembla comme un seul homme sur la place située devant la porte des Eaux. Ilsdirent au scribe Esdras d'apporter le livre de la Loi de Moïse, que Yahvé avait prescrite à Israël.
Therefore, Ezra the priest brought the law before the multitude of men and women, and all those who were able to understand, on the first day of the seventh month.2 Alors le prêtre Esdras apporta la Loi devant l'assemblée, qui se composait des hommes, desfemmes et de tous ceux qui avaient l'âge de raison. C'était le premier jour du septième mois.
And he read it openly in the street which was before the water gate, from morning even until midday, in the sight of the men and women, and those who understood. And the ears of all the people were attentive to the book.3 Sur la place située devant la porte des Eaux, il lut dans le livre, depuis l'aube jusqu'à midi, enprésence des hommes, des femmes et de ceux qui avaient l'âge de raison: tout le peuple tendait l'oreille au livrede la Loi.
Then Ezra the scribe stood upon a step of wood, which he had made for speaking. And standing beside him were Mattithiah, and Shemaiah, and Anaiah, and Uriah, and Hilkiah, and Maaseiah, on his right. And on the left were Pedaiah, Mishael, and Malchijah, and Hashum, and Hashbaddanah, Zechariah, and Meshullam.4 Le scribe Esdras se tenait sur une estrade de bois, construite pour la circonstance; près de lui setenaient: à sa droite, Mattitya, Shéma, Anaya, Uriyya, Hilqiyya et Maaséya, et, à sa gauche, Pedaya, Mishaël,Malkiyya, Hashum, Hashbaddana, Zekarya et Meshullam.
And Ezra opened the book before all the people. For he stood out above all the people. And when he had opened it, all the people stood up.5 Esdras ouvrit le livre au regard de tout le peuple - car il dominait tout le peuple - et, quand ill'ouvrit, tout le peuple se mit debout.
And Ezra blessed the Lord, the great God. And all the people responded, “Amen, Amen,” lifting up their hands. And they bowed down, and they adored God, facing the ground.6 Alors Esdras bénit Yahvé, le grand Dieu; tout le peuple, mains levées, répondit: "Amen! Amen",puis ils s'inclinèrent et se prosternèrent devant Yahvé, le visage contre terre.
Then Jeshua, and Bani, and Sherebiah, Jamin, Akkub, Shabbethai, Hodiah, Maaseiah, Kelita, Azariah, Jozabad, Hanan, Pelaiah, the Levites, caused the people to be silent in order to hear the law. And the people were standing on their feet.7 (Josué, Bani, Shérébya, Yamîn, Aqqub, Shabtaï, Hodiyya, Maaséya, Qelita, Azarya, Yozabad,Hanân, Pelaya, qui étaient lévites, expliquaient la Loi au peuple, pendant que le peuple demeurait debout.)
And they read from the book of the law of God, distinctly and plainly, so as to be understood. And when it was read, they did understand.8 Et Esdras lut dans le livre de la Loi de Dieu, traduisant et donnant le sens: ainsi l'on comprenait lalecture.
Then Nehemiah (the same is the cupbearer) and Ezra, the priest and scribe, and the Levites, who were interpreting for all the people, said: “This day has been sanctified to the Lord our God. Do not mourn, and do not weep.” For all of the people were weeping, as they were listening to the words of the law.9 Alors (Son Excellence Néhémie et) Esdras, le prêtre-scribe (et les lévites qui instruisaient lepeuple) dit à tout le peuple: "Ce jour est saint pour Yahvé, votre Dieu! Ne soyez pas tristes, ne pleurez pas!" Cartout le peuple pleurait en entendant les paroles de la Loi.
And he said to them: “Go, eat fat foods and drink sweet drinks, and send portions to those who have not prepared for themselves. For it is the holy day of the Lord. And do not be sad. For the joy of the Lord is also our strength.”10 Il leur dit encore: "Allez, mangez des viandes grasses, buvez des boissons douces et faites portersa part à qui n'a rien de prêt. Car ce jour est saint pour notre Seigneur! Ne vous affligez point: la joie de Yahvéest votre forteresse!"
Then the Levites caused the people to be silent, saying: “Be quiet. For the day is holy. And do not be sorrowful.”11 Et les lévites calmaient tout le peuple en disant: "Taisez-vous: ce jour est saint. Ne vous affligezpoint!"
And so all the people went forth, so that they might eat and drink, and so that they might send portions, and so that they might make a great rejoicing. For they understood the words that he had taught to them.12 Et tout le peuple s'en fut manger, boire, distribuer des parts et se livrer à grande liesse: car ilsavaient compris les paroles qu'on leur avait communiquées.
And on the second day, the leaders of the families of all the people, the priests, and the Levites were gathered together to Ezra the scribe, so that he might interpret for them the words of the law.13 Le deuxième jour, les chefs de famille de tout le peuple, les prêtres et les lévites se réunirentautour du scribe Esdras, pour scruter les paroles de la Loi.
And they found written in the law, which the Lord had instructed by the hand of Moses, that the sons of Israel should live in tabernacles on the day of solemnity in the seventh month,14 Ils trouvèrent écrit, dans la Loi que Yahvé avait prescrite par le ministère de Moïse, que lesIsraélites habiteront sous des huttes durant la fête du septième mois
and that they should proclaim and send out a voice in all their cities and in Jerusalem, saying: “Go forth to the mount, and bring olive branches, and the branches of beautiful trees, myrtle branches, and palm branches, and the branches of thick trees,” so that they might make tabernacles, just as it was written.15 et qu'ils annonceront et feront publier dans toutes leurs villes et à Jérusalem: "Allez dans lamontagne et rapportez des rameaux d'olivier, de pin, de myrte de palmier et d'autres arbres feuillus, pour fairedes huttes, comme il est écrit."
And the people went forth and brought. And they made for themselves tabernacles, each one at his own dwelling, and in their courts, and in the courts of the house of God, and in the street of the water gate, and in the street of the gate of Ephraim.16 Le peuple partit: ils rapportèrent des rameaux et se firent des huttes, chacun sur son toit, dansleurs cours, dans les parvis du Temple de Dieu, sur la place de la porte des Eaux et sur celle de la ported'Ephraïm.
Therefore, the entire assembly of those who had returned from the captivity made tabernacles and lived in tabernacles. For from the days of Jeshua, the son of Nun, even to that day, the sons of Israel had not done so. And there was exceedingly great rejoicing.17 Toute l'assemblée, ceux qui étaient revenus de la captivité, construisit ainsi des huttes et y habita- les Israélites n'avaient rien fait de tel depuis les jours de Josué, fils de Nûn, jusqu'à ce jour. Et il y eut trèsgrande liesse.
Now he read in the book of the law of God, throughout each day, from the first day even to the very last day. And they kept the solemnity for seven days. And on the eighth day, there was a gathering according to the ritual.18 Esdras lut dans le livre de la Loi de Dieu chaque jour, du premier au dernier. Sept jours durant,on célébra la fête; le huitième, il y eut, comme prescrit, une réunion solennelle.
