CATHOLIC PUBLIC DOMAINGREEK BIBLE
Now the sons of the prophets said to Elisha: “Behold, the place in which we live before you is too narrow for us.1 Και ειπον οι υιοι των προφητων προς τον Ελισσαιε, Ιδου τωρα, ο τοπος, εις τον οποιον ημεις κατοικουμεν ενωπιον σου, ειναι στενος δι' ημας?
Let us go as far as the Jordan, and let us each take from the forest a piece of timber, so that we may build for ourselves a place to live there.” And he said, “Go.”2 ας υπαγωμεν, παρακαλουμεν, εως του Ιορδανου, και εκειθεν ας λαβωμεν εκαστος μιαν δοκον, και ας καμωμεν εις εαυτους εκει τοπον, δια να κατοικωμεν εκει.
And one of them said, “Then you, too, should go with your servants.” And he answered, “I will go.”3 Και ειπεν ο εις, Ευαρεστηθητι, παρακαλω, να ελθης μετα των δουλων σου.
And he went with them. And when they had arrived at the Jordan, they were cutting down wood.4 Και υπηγε μετ' αυτων.
Then it happened that, while someone was cutting timber, the iron of the ax fell into the water. And he cried out and said: “Alas, alas, alas, my lord! For this thing was borrowed.”5 Ενω δε ο εις κατεβαλλε την δοκον, επεσε το σιδηριον εις το υδωρ?
Then the man of God said, “Where did it fall?” And he indicated to him the place. Then he cut off a piece of wood, and he threw it in. And the iron floated up.6 ειπε δε ο ανθρωπος του Θεου, Που επεσε; Και εδειξε τον τοπον εις αυτον.
And he said, “Take it.” And he extended his hand, and took it.7 Και ειπεν, Αναλαβε προς σεαυτον.
Now the king of Syria was fighting against Israel, and he took counsel with his servants, saying, “In this and that place, let us set up an ambush.”8 Ο δε βασιλευς της Συριας επολεμει εναντιον του Ισραηλ, και συνεβουλευθη μετα των δουλων αυτου, λεγων, Εις τον δεινα και δεινα τοπον θελω στρατοπεδευσει.
And so the man of God sent to the king of Israel, saying: “Take care not to pass by that place. For the Syrians are there in ambush.”9 Και απεστειλεν ο ανθρωπος του Θεου προς τον βασιλεα του Ισραηλ, λεγων, Φυλαχθητι να μη περασης τον τοπον εκεινον, διοτι οι Συριοι στρατοπεδευουσιν εκει.
And so the king of Israel sent to the place which the man of God had told him, and he prevented it. And he preserved himself, concerning that place, not merely once or twice.10 Και απεστειλεν ο βασιλευς του Ισραηλ εις τον τοπον, τον οποιον ειπε προς αυτον ο ανθρωπος του Θεου και παρηγγειλε περι αυτου?
And the heart of the king of Syria was disturbed over this matter. And calling together his servants, he said, “Why have you not revealed to me the one who is betraying me to the king of Israel?”11 Και εταραχθη η καρδια του βασιλεως της Συριας δια το πραγμα τουτο? και συγκαλεσας τους δουλους αυτου, ειπε προς αυτους, Δεν θελετε με αναγγειλει, τις εξ ημων ειναι υπερ του βασιλεως του Ισραηλ;
And one of his servants said: “By no means, my lord the king! Rather it is the prophet Elisha, who is in Israel, who is revealing to the king of Israel every word whatsoever that you will speak in your conclave.”12 Και ειπεν εις εκ των δουλων αυτου, Ουδεις, κυριε μου βασιλευ?
And he said to them, “Go, and see where he is, so that I may send and capture him.” And they reported to him, saying, “Behold, he is in Dothan.”13 Και ειπεν, Υπαγετε και ιδετε που ειναι, δια να στειλω να συλλαβω αυτον.
Therefore, he sent horses, and chariots, and experienced soldiers to that place. And when they had arrived in the night, they encircled the city.14 Και απεστειλεν εκει ιππους και αμαξας και στρατευμα μεγα, οιτινες, ελθοντες δια νυκτος, περιεκυκλωσαν την πολιν.
Now the servant of the man of God, arising at first light, went out and saw the army all around the city, with horses and chariots. And he reported it to him, saying: “Alas, alas, alas, my lord! What shall we do?”15 Και οτε εξηγερθη το πρωι ο υπηρετης του ανθρωπου του Θεου και εξηλθεν, ιδου, στρατευμα ειχε περικυκλωμενην την πολιν με ιππους και αμαξας. Και ειπεν ο υπηρετης αυτου προς αυτον, Ω, κυριε, τι θελομεν καμει;
But he responded: “Do not be afraid. For there are more with us than with them.”16 Ο δε ειπε, Μη φοβου?
And when Elisha had prayed, he said, “O Lord, open the eyes of this one, so that he may see.” And the Lord opened the eyes of the servant, and he saw. And behold, the mountain was full of horses and chariots of fire, all around Elisha.17 Και προσηυχηθη ο Ελισσαιε και ειπε, Κυριε, Ανοιξον, δεομαι, τους οφθαλμους αυτου, δια να ιδη.
Then truly, the enemies descended to him. But Elisha prayed to the Lord, saying: “Strike, I beg you, this people with blindness.” And the Lord struck them, so that they would not see, in accord with the word of Elisha.18 Και οτε κατεβησαν προς αυτον οι Συριοι, προσηυχηθη ο Ελισσαιε προς τον Κυριον και ειπε, Παταξον, δεομαι, τον λαον τουτον με αορασιαν.
Then Elisha said to them: “This is not the way, and this is not the city. Follow me, and I will reveal to you the man whom you are seeking.” Then he led them into Samaria.19 Και ειπε προς αυτους ο Ελισσαιε, Δεν ειναι αυτη η οδος ουδε αυτη η πολις?
And when they had entered into Samaria, Elisha said, “O Lord, open the eyes of these ones, so that they may see.” And the Lord opened their eyes, and they saw themselves to be in the midst of Samaria.20 Και οτε ηλθον εις την Σαμαρειαν, ειπεν ο Ελισσαιε, Ανοιξον, Κυριε, τους οφθαλμους τουτων, δια να βλεπωσι.
And the king of Israel, when he had seen them, said to Elisha, “My father, should I not strike them?”21 Και ως ειδεν αυτους ο βασιλευς του Ισραηλ, ειπε προς τον Ελισσαιε, Να παταξω, να παταξω, πατερ μου;
And he said: “You should not strike them. For you did not capture them with your sword or bow, so that you might strike them. Instead, set bread and water before them, so that they may eat and drink, and then go to their lord.”22 Ο δε ειπε, Μη παταξης?
And a great preparation of foods was placed before them. And they ate and drank. And he dismissed them. And they went away to their lord. And the robbers of Syria no longer came into the land of Israel.23 Και εθεσεν εμπροσθεν αυτων αφθονον τροφην?
Now it happened that, after these things, Benhadad, the king of Syria, gathered together his entire army, and he ascended and was besieging Samaria.24 Μετα δε ταυτα ο Βεν-αδαδ βασιλευς της Συριας συνηθροισεν απαν το στρατευμα αυτου, και ανεβη και επολιορκησε την Σαμαρειαν.
And a great famine occurred in Samaria. And it was blockaded for a long time, until the head of a donkey was sold for eighty pieces of silver, and one fourth part of a pint of pigeons’ dung sold for five silver coins.25 Εγεινε δε πεινα μεγαλη εν Σαμαρεια?
And as the king of Israel was passing by the wall, a certain woman cried out to him, saying, “Save me, my lord the king!”26 Και ενω διεβαινεν ο βασιλευς του Ισραηλ επι του τειχους, γυνη τις εβοησε προς αυτον, λεγουσα, Σωσον, κυριε μου βασιλευ.
And he said: “If the Lord does not save you, how am I able to save you? From the grain floor, or from the wine press?” And the king said to her, “What is the matter with you?” And she responded:27 Ο δε ειπεν, Εαν ο Κυριος δεν σε σωση, ποθεν θελω σε σωσει εγω; μη εκ του αλωνιου η εκ του ληνου;
“This woman said to me: ‘Give your son, so that we may eat him today, and we will eat my son tomorrow.’28 Και ειπε προς αυτην ο βασιλευς, Τι εχεις; Η δε ειπε, Η γυνη αυτη μοι ειπε, Δος τον υιον σου, δια να φαγωμεν αυτον σημερον, και αυριον θελομεν φαγει τον υιον μου?
Therefore, we cooked my son, and we ate him. And I said to her on the next day, ‘Give your son, so that we may eat him.’ But she concealed her son.”29 και εβρασαμεν τον υιον μου και εφαγομεν αυτον?
When the king had heard this, he tore his garments, and he passed along the wall. And all the people saw the haircloth that he had worn underneath, beside his flesh.30 Και ως ηκουσεν ο βασιλευς τους λογους της γυναικος, διερρηξε τα ιματια αυτου?
And the king said, “May God do these things to me, and may he add these other things, if the head of Elisha, the son of Shaphat, will remain on him this day!”31 Και ειπεν, Ουτω να καμη εις εμε ο Θεος και ουτω να προσθεση, εαν η κεφαλη του Ελισσαιε υιου του Σαφατ σταθη επανω αυτου σημερον.
Now Elisha was sitting in his house, and the elders were sitting with him. And so he sent a man ahead. And before that messenger arrived, he said to the elders: “Do you not know that this son of a murderer is sending someone to cut off my head? Therefore, watch, and when the messenger arrives, close the door. And you shall not permit him to enter. For behold, the sound of his lord’s feet is behind him.”32 Ο δε Ελισσαιε εκαθητο εν τω οικω αυτου, και οι πρεσβυτεροι εκαθηντο μετ' αυτου? και απεστειλεν ο βασιλευς ανδρα απ' εμπροσθεν αυτου? πριν δε ελθη προς αυτον ο μηνυτης, αυτος ειπε προς τους πρεσβυτερους, Δεν βλεπετε οτι ουτος ο υιος του φονευτου εστειλε να αφαιρεση την κεφαλην μου; βλεπετε, καθως ελθη ο μηνυτης, κλεισατε την θυραν και εμποδισατε αυτον προς την θυραν? η φωνη των ποδων του κυριου αυτου δεν ειναι εξοπισθεν αυτου;
While he was still speaking to them, the messenger appeared who was sent to him. And he said: “Behold, such a great evil is from the Lord! What more should I expect from the Lord?”33 Και ενω ετι ελαλει μετ' αυτων, ιδου, κατεβη προς αυτον ο μηνυτης? και ειπεν, Ιδου, παρα Κυριου ειναι το κακον τουτο? τι πλεον να ελπισω εις τον Κυριον;
