Then, in the eighteenth year of the reign of Jeroboam, the son of Nebat, Abijam reigned over Judah.1 No décimo oitavo ano do reinado de Jeroboão, filho de Nabat, Abião tornou-se rei de Judá.
He reigned for three years in Jerusalem. The name of his mother was Maacah, the daughter of Abishalom.2 Reinou três anos em Jerusalém. Sua mãe chamava-se Maaca, filha de Absalão.
And he walked in all the sins of his father, which he had done before him. Neither was his heart perfect with the Lord his God, as was the heart of David, his father.3 Abião entregou-se a todos os pecados que seu pai tinha cometido antes dele. Seu coração não era inteiramente fiel ao Senhor, como o de seu pai Davi.
But for the sake of David, the Lord his God gave to him a lamp in Jerusalem, so that he might raise up his son after him, and so that he might establish Jerusalem.4 Todavia, o Senhor, seu Deus, em atenção a Davi, conservou-lhe uma lâmpada em Jerusalém: deu-lhe um filho que lhe sucedeu, e deixou subsistir Jerusalém.
For David had done what was right in the eyes of the Lord, and he had not declined from all of the things that he had instructed to him, during all the days of his life, except the matter of Uriah, the Hittite.5 Porque Davi tinha feito o que era reto aos olhos do Senhor, e não se tinha jamais desviado em toda a sua vida de um só dos mandamentos que recebera, exceto o que se passou com Urias, o hiteu.
Now there was war between Rehoboam and Jeroboam during the entire time of his life.6 Houve hostilidades contínuas entre Roboão e Jeroboão durante toda a sua vida.
And the rest of the words of Abijam, and all that he did, were these not written in the book of the words of the days of the kings of Judah? And there was fighting between Abijam and Jeroboam.7 O resto da história de Abião e seus atos, tudo se acha consignado no livro das Crônicas dos reis de Judá. Abião e Jeroboão guerrearam também entre si.
And Abijam slept with his fathers, and they buried him in the city of David. And Asa, his son, reigned in his place.8 Depois disso, Abião adormeceu com seus pais e foi sepultado na cidade de Davi. Seu filho Asa sucedeu-lhe no trono.
Then, in the twentieth year of Jeroboam, the king of Israel, Asa reigned as king of Judah.9 No vigésimo ano de Jeroboão, rei de Israel, Asa tornou-se rei de Judá, e reinou quarenta e um anos em Jerusalém.
And he reigned for forty-one years in Jerusalem. The name of his mother was Maacah, the daughter of Abishalom.10 Sua mãe chamava-se Maaca, filha de Absalão.
And Asa did what was right before the sight of the Lord, just as his father David did.11 Asa fez o que é reto aos olhos do Senhor, como Davi, seu pai.
And he took away the effeminate from the land. And he purged all the filth of the idols, which his fathers had made.12 Expulsou da terra as prostitutas {sagradas} e acabou com todos os ídolos que seus pais tinham feito.
Moreover, he also removed his mother, Maacah, from being the leader in the sacrifices of Priapus, and in his sacred grove which she had consecrated. And he destroyed his grotto. And he shattered the very indecent idol, and he burned it at the torrent Kidron.13 Além disso, destituiu da dignidade de rainha sua própria mãe Maaca, por ter feito essa vergonha de asserá. Asa despedaçou esse ídolo e queimou-o no vale de Cedron.
But the high places, he did not take away. Yet truly, the heart of Asa was perfect with the Lord during all his days.14 Embora não tenham desaparecido os lugares altos, o coração de Asa foi inteiramente devotado ao Senhor durante toda a sua vida.
And he brought the things that his father had sanctified and vowed back to the house of the Lord: the silver, and the gold, and the vessels.15 Pôs no templo do Senhor todos os objetos consagrados por seu pai e por ele mesmo, a prata, o ouro e os utensílios.
Now there was war between Asa and Baasha, the king of Israel, during all their days.16 Asa e Baasa, rei de Israel, guerrearam-se mutuamente durante toda a sua vida.
And Baasha, the king of Israel, ascended against Judah. And he built up Ramah, so that no one would be able to exit or enter from the side of Asa, the king of Judah.17 Baasa, rei de Israel, atacou Judá e fortificou Ramá, a fim de bloquear todas as suas comunicações com Asa, rei de Judá.
And so, Asa took all the silver and the gold which had remained in the treasuries of the house of the Lord, and in the treasuries of the house of the king, and he gave it into the hands of his servants. And he sent them to Benhadad, the son of Tabrimmon, the son of Hezion, the king of Syria, who was living in Damascus, saying:18 Asa, porém, tomando toda a prata e o ouro que restavam nas reservas do templo do Senhor e do palácio real, pô-los nas mãos de seus servos que enviou a Ben-Hadad, filho de Tabremon, filho de Hezion, rei da Síria, que residia em Damasco, com esta mensagem:
“There is a pact between me and you, and between my father and your father. For this reason, I have sent to you gifts of silver and of gold. And I ask you to go and break your pact with Baasha, the king of Israel, so that he may withdraw from me.”19 Façamos aliança, assim como foram aliados o teu pai e o meu. Mando-te um presente de prata e ouro, e peço-te que rompas tua aliança com Baasa, rei de Israel, para que ele cesse de me importunar.
Benhadad, acquiescing to king Asa, sent the leaders of his army against the cities of Israel. And they struck Ijon, and Dan, and Abel, the house of Maacah, and all of Chinneroth, that is, all the land of Naphtali.20 Ben-Hadad acedeu ao desejo do rei Asa; mandou seus generais contra as cidades de Israel, e devastou Aion, Dã, Abel, Bet-Maaca, todo o Cenerot com a terra de Neftali.
And when Baasha had heard this, he ceased from fortifying Ramah, and he returned to Tirzah.21 Ao saber disso, Baasa abandonou a fortificação de Ramá e retirou-se para Tersa.
Then king Asa sent an announcement to all of Judah, saying, “Let no one be excused.” And they took away the stones from Ramah, and its timber, with which Baasha had fortified it.
Now all the rest of the words of Asa, and his entire strength, and all that he did, and the cities that he built, were these not written in the book of the words of the days of the kings of Judah? Yet truly, in the time of his old age, he was afflicted in his feet.23 O resto da história de Asa, seus grandes feitos, seus atos e as cidades que construiu, tudo isso se acha consignado no livro das Crônicas dos reis de Judá. Com a velhice sobreveio-lhe a gota nos pés.
And he slept with his fathers, and he was buried with them in the city of David, his father. And Jehoshaphat, his son, reigned in his place.24 Adormeceu com seus pais e foi sepultado com eles na cidade de Davi, seu pai. Seu filho Josafá sucedeu-lhe no trono.
Yet truly, Nadab, the son of Jeroboam, reigned over Israel, in the second year of Asa, the king of Judah. And he reigned over Israel for two years.25 No segundo ano de Asa, rei de Judá, Nadab, filho de Jeroboão, tornou-se rei de Israel. Reinou dois anos em Israel.
And he did what is evil in the sight of the Lord. And he walked in the ways of his father and in his sins, by which he caused Israel to sin.26 Ele fez o mal aos olhos do Senhor, imitou o seu pai, entregando-se ao pecado ao qual Jeroboão havia arrastado Israel.
Then Baasha, the son of Ahijah, from the house of Issachar, set an ambush against him, and he struck him down at Gibbethon, which is a city of the Philistines. For indeed, Nadab and all of Israel were laying siege to Gibbethon.27 Baasa, filho de Aías, da casa de Issacar, conspirou contra ele, e assassinou-o diante de Gebeton dos filisteus, no tempo em que Nadab e todo o Israel sitiavam essa cidade.
And so Baasha killed him in the third year of Asa, the king of Judah, and he reigned in his place.28 Baasa, no terceiro ano de Asa, rei de Judá, cometeu esse crime e sucedeu-lhe no trono.
And when he had reigned, he struck down the entire house of Jeroboam. He did not leave behind even one soul from his offspring, until he had wiped him away, in accord with the word of the Lord, which he had spoken by the hand of Ahijah, the Shilonite,29 Logo que subiu ao trono, exterminou toda a casa de Jeroboão, não deixando alma viva. Exterminou-os completamente, como havia predito o Senhor pelo seu servo Aías, de Silo,
because of the sin of Jeroboam, which he had committed, and by which he had caused Israel to sin, and because of the offense by which he had provoked the Lord, the God of Israel.30 por causa dos pecados que Jeroboão cometeu e levou Israel a cometer, provocando assim a cólera do Senhor, Deus de Israel.
But the rest of the words of Nadab, and all that he did, were these not written in the book of the words of the days of the kings of Israel?31 O resto da história de Nadab e suas ações, tudo está consignado no livro das Crônicas dos reis de Israel.
And there was war between Asa and Baasha, the king of Israel, during all their days.32 Asa e Baasa, rei de Israel, guerrearam-se mutuamente durante todo o tempo de sua vida.
In the third year of Asa, the king of Judah, Baasha, the son of Ahijah, reigned over all of Israel, at Tirzah, for twenty-four years.33 No terceiro ano de Asa, rei de Judá, Baasa, filho de Aías, tornou-se rei de Israel. Residia em Tersa, e reinou vinte e quatro anos.
And he did evil in the sight of the Lord. And he walked in the ways of Jeroboam, and in his sins, by which he caused Israel to sin.34 Baasa fez o mal diante do Senhor; andou no caminho de Jeroboão, e entregou-se ao pecado ao qual Jeroboão arrastara Israel.
