Now it happened in that time that Amraphel, king of Shinar, and Arioch, king of Pontus, and Chedorlaomer, king of the Elamites, and Tidal, king of the Nations,1 When Amraphel king of Shinar, Arioch king of Ellasar, Chedor-Laomer king of Elam, and Tidal king ofthe Goiim,
went to war against Bera, king of Sodom, and against Birsha, king of Gomorrah, and against Shinab, king of Admah, and against Shemeber, king of Zeboiim, and against the king of Bela, that is Zoar.2 made war on Bera king of Sodom, Birsha king of Gomorrah, Shinab king of Admah, Shemeber king ofZeboi m, and the king of Bela (that is, Zoar),
All these came together in the wooded valley, which is now the Sea of Salt.3 al the latter joined forces in the Val ey of Siddim (now the Salt Sea).
For they had served Chedorlaomer for twelve years, and in the thirteenth year they withdrew from him.4 For twelve years they had been under the yoke of Chedor-Laomer, but in the thirteenth year theyrevolted.
Therefore, in the fourteenth year, Chedorlaomer arrived, and the kings who were with him. And they struck the Rephaim at Ashteroth of the two horns, and the Zuzim with them, and the Emim at Shaveh-Kiriathaim.5 In the fourteenth year Chedor-Laomer arrived and the kings who had al ied themselves with him. Theydefeated the Rephaim at Ashteroth-Carnaim, the Zuzim at Ham, the Emim in the Plain of Kiriathaim,
and the Chorreans in the mountains of Seir, even to the plains of Paran, which is in wilderness.6 the Horites in the mountainous district of Seir near El-Paran, which is on the edge of the desert.
And they returned and arrived at the fountain of Mishpat, which is Kadesh. And they struck the entire region of the Amalekites, and the Amorites who dwelt in Hazazontamar.7 Wheeling round, they came to the Spring of Judgement (that is, Kadesh); they conquered all theterritory of the Amalekites and also the Amorites who lived in Hazazon-Tamar.
And the king of Sodom, and the king of Gomorrah, and the king of Admah, and the king of Zeboiim, and indeed the king of Bela, which is Zoar, went forth. And they directed their point against them in the wooded valley,8 Then the kings of Sodom, Gomorrah, Admah, Zeboiim and Bela (that is, Zoar) marched out andengaged them in the Val ey of Siddim:
namely, against Chedorlaomer, king of the Elamites, and Tidal, king of the Nations, and Amraphel, king of Shinar, and Arioch, king of Pontus: four kings against five.9 Chedor-Laomer king of Elam, Tidal king of the Goiim, Amraphel king of Shinar and Arioch king ofEl asar: four kings against five.
Now the wooded valley had many pits of bitumen. And so the king of Sodom and the king of Gomorrah turned back and they fell there. And those who remained, fled to the mountain.10 Now there were many bitumen wel s in the Val ey of Siddim, and in their flight the kings of Sodomand Gomorrah fel into them, while the rest fled into the hil s.
Then they took all the substance of the Sodomites and the Gomorrahites, and all that pertained to food, and they went away,11 The conquerors seized al the possessions of Sodom and Gomorrah, and all their provisions, andmade off.
along with both Lot, the son of Abram’s brother, who lived in Sodom, and his substance.12 They also took Lot (the nephew of Abram) and his possessions and made off; he had been living atSodom.
And behold, one who had escaped reported it to Abram the Hebrew, who lived in the steep valley of Mamre the Amorite, who was the brother of Eshcol, and the brother of Aner. For these had formed an agreement with Abram.13 A survivor came to tell Abram, and Aner the Hebrew, who was living at the Oak of the AmoriteMamre, the brother of Eshcol; these were al ies of Abram.
When Abram had heard this, namely, that his brother Lot had been taken captive, he numbered three hundred and eighteen of his own armed men and he went in pursuit all the way to Dan.14 When Abram heard that his kinsman had been taken captive, he mustered his retainers born in hisown household, numbering three hundred and eighteen, and gave chase as far as Dan.
And dividing his company, he rushed upon them in the night. And he struck them and pursued them as far as Hobah, which is on the left hand of Damascus.15 He and his retainers deployed against them under cover of dark, defeated them and pursued themas far as Hobah, north of Damascus.
And he brought back all the substance, and Lot his brother, with his substance, likewise the women and the people.16 He recaptured all the goods as wel as his kinsman Lot and his possessions, together with thewomen and people.
Then the king of Sodom went out to meet him, after he returned from the slaughter at Chedorlaomer, and the kings who were with him at the valley of Shaveh, which is the valley of the king.17 When Abram returned from defeating Chedor-Laomer and the kings who had been on his side, theking of Sodom came to meet him in the Val ey of Shaveh (that is, the Val ey of the King).
Then in truth, Melchizedek, the king of Salem, brought forth bread and wine, for he was a priest of the Most High God;18 Melchizedek king of Salem brought bread and wine; he was a priest of God Most High.
he blessed him, and he said: “Blessed be Abram by the Most High God, who created heaven and earth.19 He pronounced this blessing: Blessed be Abram by God Most High, Creator of heaven and earth. And blessed be God Most High for putting your enemies into your clutches.
And blessed be the Most High God, through whose protection the enemies are in your hands.” And he gave him tithes from everything.20 And Abram gave him a tenth of everything.
Then the king of Sodom said to Abram, “Give me these souls, and take the rest for yourself.”21 The king of Sodom said to Abram, 'Give me the people and take the possessions for yourself.'
And he responded to him: “I lift up my hand to the Lord God, the Most High, the Possessor of heaven and earth,22 But Abram replied to the king of Sodom, 'I swear by God Most High, Creator of heaven and earth:
that from one thread within a blanket, even to a single shoelace, I will not take anything from that which is yours, lest you say, ‘I have enriched Abram,’23 not one thread, not one sandal strap, will I take of what is yours, for you to be able to say, "I madeAbram rich."
except that which the young men have eaten, and the shares for the men who came with me: Aner, Eshcol, and Mamre. These will take their shares.”24 For myself, nothing -- except what the troops have used up, and the share due to the men who camewith me, Eshcol, Aner and Mamre; let them take their share.'
