NEW JERUSALEMNEW AMERICAN BIBLE
Proclamation about Tyre: Howl, ships of Tarshish, for al has been destroyed- no more houses, no wayof getting in: the news has reached them from Kittim.1 Oracle on Tyre: Wail, O ships of Tarshish, for your port is destroyed; From the land of the Kittim the news reaches them.
Be struck dumb, inhabitants of the coast, you merchants of Sidon, whose messengers cross the sea2 Silence! you who dwell on the coast, you merchants of Sidon, Whose messengers crossed the sea
to the wide ocean. The grain of the Canal, the harvest of the Nile, formed her revenue. She was themarket for the nations.3 over the deep waters. The grain of Shihor, the harvest of the Nile, was her revenue, and she the merchant among nations.
Blush, Sidon (citadel of the seas), for this is what the sea has said, 'I have felt no birth-pangs, nevergiven birth, never reared boys nor brought up girls.'4 Shame, O Sidon, fortress on the sea, for the sea has spoken: "I have not been in labor, nor given birth, nor raised young men, nor reared virgins."
When the news reaches Egypt, they wil tremble to hear Tyre's fate.5 When it is heard in Egypt they shall be in anguish at the news of Tyre.
Cross to Tarshish, howl, inhabitants of the coast.6 Pass over to Tarshish, wailing, you who dwell on the coast!
Is this your proud city founded far back in the past, whose steps led her far afield to found her colonies?7 Is this your wanton city, whose origin is from old, Whose feet have taken her to dwell in distant lands?
Who took this decision against Tyre, who used to hand out crowns, whose traders were princes, whose merchants, men honoured in the city?8 Who has planned such a thing against Tyre, the bestower of crowns, Whose merchants are princes, whose traders are the earth's honored men?
Yahweh Sabaoth took this decision to wither the pride of al beauty and humiliate those honoured in thecity.9 The LORD of hosts has planned it, to disgrace all pride of majesty, to degrade all the earth's honored men.
Cultivate your country like the Delta, daughter of Tarshish, for your marine docks are no more.10 Cross to your own land, O ship of Tarshish; the harbor is no more.
He has raised his hand against the sea, he has shaken kingdoms, Yahweh has ordained thedestruction of the fortresses of Canaan.11 His hand he stretches out over the sea, he shakes kingdoms; The LORD has ordered the destruction of Canaan's strongholds.
He has said, 'Exult no more, il -treated virgin daughter of Sidon! Get up, cross to Kittim, no respite foryou there, either.'12 You shall exult no more, he says, you who are now oppressed, virgin daughter Sidon. Arise, pass over to the Kittim, even there you shall find no rest.
Look at the land of the Chaldaeans, a people who used not to exist! Assyria assigned it to thecreatures of the wilds; they raised their siege-towers against it, demolished its bastions, reduced it to ruin.13 (This people is the land of the Chaldeans, not Assyria.) She whom the impious founded, setting up towers for her, Has had her castles destroyed, and has been turned into a ruin.
Howl, ships of Tarshish, for your fortress has been destroyed.14 Lament, O ships of Tarshish, for your haven is destroyed.
When that day comes, Tyre will be forgotten for seventy years, the length of one king's life. But whenthe seventy years are over, Tyre wil become like the whore in the song:15 On that day, Tyre shall be forgotten for seventy years. With the days of another king, at the end of seventy years, it shall be for Tyre as in the song about the harlot:
'Take your harp, walk the town, whore whom men have forgotten! Play sweetly, song after song, tomake them remember you.'16 Take a harp, go about the city, O forgotten harlot; Pluck the strings skillfully, sing many songs, that they may remember you.
At the end of the seventy years Yahweh wil visit Tyre. She wil receive her pay again and play thewhore with al the kingdoms of the world on the surface of the earth.17 At the end of the seventy years the LORD shall visit Tyre. She shall return to her hire and deal with all the world's kingdoms on the face of the earth.
But her profits and wages wil be dedicated to Yahweh. They will not be stored or hoarded, but herprofits wil go to those who live in Yahweh's presence, for them to have as much food as they want and splendidclothes.18 But her merchandise and her hire shall be sacred to the LORD. It shall not be stored up or laid away, but from her merchandise those who dwell before the LORD shall eat their fill and clothe themselves in choice attire.
