NEW JERUSALEM	BIBBIA VOLGARE
1 Yes, your judgements are great and impenetrable, which is why uninstructed souls have gone astray.	1 Grandi sono li giudicii tuoi, Signore, e le parole the sono inenarrabili; per questo le anime non addottrinate errarono.
2 While the wicked supposed they had a holy nation in their power, they themselves lay prisoners of thedark, in the fetters of long night, confined under their own roofs, banished from eternal providence.	2 Quando egli è mostrato per falsi argomenti alli iniqui, che possono signoreggiare la gente santa, poi legati con legami di tenebre, e rinchiusi sotto i tetti, i fuggitivi delle perpetuali providenze giacerono.
3 While they thought to remain unnoticed with their secret sins, curtained by dark forgetfulness, theywere scattered in fearful dismay, terrified by apparitions.	3 E mentre ch' elli si pensavano nascondere nelli oscuri peccati, sono dispersi per lo velamento della dimenticanza, spaventati orribilmente, e turbati con soperchia ammirazione.
4 The hiding place sheltering them could not ward off their fear; terrifying noises echoed round them;and gloomy, grim-faced spectres haunted them.	4 Nè la spelonca, nella quale elli erano, li conservava sanza paura; però che il suono che discendeva turbava coloro, e persone tristi, che apparivano a coloro, facevano loro paura.
5 No fire had power enough to give them light, nor could the brightly blazing stars il uminate that dreadfulnight.	5 Il fuoco per nessuna potenza sua dare potea loro lume; nè le fiamme delle stelle potevano alluminare quella spaventevole notte.
6 The only light for them was a great, spontaneous blaze -- a fearful sight to see! And in their terror,once that sight had vanished, they thought what they had seen more terrible than ever.	6 Appariva loro uno subito fuoco, pieno di paura; e percossi per la paura, temeano più quelle cose che non vedeano, che quelle che vedevano.
7 Their magical il usions were powerless now, and their claims to intel igence were ignominiouslyconfounded;	7 E li schernimenti dell' arte magica vi erano apposti; e lo castigamento della gloriosa sapienza era contumelia.
8 for those who promised to drive out fears and disorders from sick souls were now themselves sick withludicrous fright.	8 Però che coloro, li quali promettevano di scacciare le paure e le tribulazioni dell' anima languente, questi medesimi languivano con ischernimento, pieni di paura.
9 Even when there was nothing frightful to scare them, the vermin creeping past and the hissing ofreptiles filled them with panic;	9 Però che eziandio se nulla delle cose, che mostravano contra natura, perturbavano loro, nientemeno per li trapassamenti delli animali, e per lo soffio delli serpenti commossi, tremanti morivano; e diceano ch' elli non vedeano l' aere, il quale niuno puote schifare per alcuno modo.
10 they died convulsed with fright, refusing even to look at empty air, which cannot be eluded anyhow!	10 (Frequentemente le cose pessime, che debbono venire, spaventano li malvagi uomini, riprendendoli la coscienza per le loro cose malfatte). Conciosia cosa che la malvagità sia piena di paura, dà testimonianza della condannagione (di ciascuno); la crudele coscienza, turbata, sempre presume.
11 Wickedness is confessedly very cowardly, and it condemns itself; under pressure from conscience italways assumes the worst.	11 La paura non è altro, se none (uno adiutorio di) presunzione di pensiere d'aiutorii.
12 Fear, indeed, is nothing other than the failure of the help offered by reason;	12 E infino che dentro è il minore aspettamento, si computa maggiore potenza di quella cagione, della quale presta tormento.
13 the less you rely within yourself on this, the more alarming it is not to know the cause of yoursuffering.	13 E coloro li quali vennero dalli profondi e infimi lochi (sopravegnente), e dormendo sopravenente la impotente notte,
14 And they, al locked in the same sleep, while that darkness lasted -- which was in fact quite powerlessand had issued from the depths of equal y powerless Hades-	14 alcuna volta erano battuti dalla paura della visione spaventevole, alcuna volta l'anime loro venivano meno per ismarrimento; però che la improvisa e insperata paura era sopravenuta loro.
15 were now chased by monstrous spectres, now paralysed by the fainting of their souls; for a sudden,unexpected terror had attacked them.	15 Appresso, se alcuno di quelli cadeva, era guardato in carcere, rinchiuso senza ferri.
16 And thus, whoever it might be that fel there stayed clamped to the spot in this prison without bars.	16 E se alcuno di villa o pastore o lavoratore di terra fosse preso, si sosteneano nella necessitade di non potere fuggire.
17 Whether he was ploughman or shepherd, or somebody at work in the desert, he was stil overtakenand suffered the inevitable fate, for al had been bound by the one same chain of darkness.	17 Tutti erano legati insieme d' una medesima catena di tenebre. O fosse spirito soffiante, o tra li spessi rami il suave suono delli uccelli, o vero di fiume molto corrente acqua,
18 The soughing of the wind, the tuneful noise of birds in the spreading branches, the measured beat ofwater in its powerful course, the headlong din of rocks cascading down,	18 o fortissimo suono di rovinanti pietre, o corrimento invisibile di animali scherzanti, o fortissima voce di mugghianti bestie, o fusse resonante suono delli altissimi monti, facevano tramortire per paura coloro.
19 the unseen course of bounding animals, the roaring of the most savage of wild beasts, the echorebounding from the clefts in the mountains, all held them paralysed with fear.	19 Tutto il mondo era illuminato di chiarissimo lume, e da non impedite opere era contenuto.
20 For the whole world shone with the light of day and, unhindered, went about its work;	20 A coloro soli era posta la grave notte, imagine di tenebra che dovea venire sopra coloro. Elli medesimi erano adunque a sè gravi tenebre..
21 over them alone there spread a heavy darkness, image of the dark that would receive them. Butheavier than the darkness was the burden they were to themselves.
