2 Maccabees 15

NEW JERUSALEM	JERUSALEM
1 Nicanor heard that Judas and his men were in the neighbourhood of Samaria, so he decided to attackthem, at no risk to himself, on the day of rest.	1 Apprenant que Judas et les siens étaient dans les parages de Samarie, Nikanor prit le parti deles attaquer sans risque, le jour du repos.
2 Those Jews who had been compel ed to follow him, said, 'Do not massacre them in such a savage,barbarous way. Respect the day on which the All-seeing has conferred a special holiness.'	2 Les Juifs qui le suivaient par contrainte lui dirent: "Ne va pas les faire périr d'une façon sisauvage et si barbare, mais rends gloire au jour que Celui qui veille sur toutes choses a sanctifié de préférence."
3 At this the triple-dyed scoundrel asked if there were in heaven a sovereign who had ordered thekeeping of the Sabbath day.	3 Alors ce triple scélérat demanda s'il y avait au ciel un souverain qui eût prescrit de célébrer lejour du sabbat.
4 When they answered, 'The living Lord himself, the Heavenly Sovereign, has ordered the observanceof the seventh day,'	4 Comme ceux-ci lui répliquaient: "C'est le Seigneur vivant lui-même, souverain au ciel, qui aordonné d'observer le septième jour",
5 he retorted, 'And I, as sovereign on earth, order you to take up arms and do the king's business.' Foral that, he did not manage to carry out his wicked plan.	5 l'autre reprit: "Et moi aussi je suis souverain sur terre: je commande qu'on prenne les armes etqu'on fasse le service du roi." Toutefois, il ne fut pas maître de réaliser son funeste dessein.
6 While Nicanor, in his unlimited boastfulness and pride, was planning to erect a general trophy with thespoils taken from Judas and his men,	6 Tandis que Nikanor, se redressant avec une extrême jactance, décidait d'ériger un trophéecommun avec les dépouilles de Judas et de ses compagnons,
7 Maccabaeus remained firm in his confident conviction that the Lord would stand by him.	7 Maccabée, de son côté, gardant une confiance inaltérable, avait plein espoir d'obtenir dusecours de la part du Seigneur.
8 He urged his men not to be dismayed by the foreigners' attacks but, keeping in mind the help that hadcome to them from Heaven in the past, to be confident that this time too victory would be theirs with the help ofthe Almighty.	8 Il engageait ceux qui se trouvaient avec lui à ne pas redouter l'attaque des païens, mais, ausouvenir des secours qui étaient déjà venus du Ciel, à compter qu'en ce moment aussi, du Tout-Puissant leurviendrait la victoire.
9 He put fresh heart into them by citing the Law and the Prophets and, by stirring up memories of thebattles they had already won, he fil ed them with new enthusiasm.	9 En les encourageant à l'aide de la Loi et des Prophètes, en évoquant à leur esprit les combatsqu'ils avaient déjà soutenus, il les remplit d'une nouvelle ardeur.
10 Having thus aroused their courage, he ended his exhortation by demonstrating the treachery of theforeigners and how they had violated their oaths.	10 Ayant ainsi réveillé leurs ardeurs, il acheva de les exhorter en leur montrant la déloyauté despaïens et la violation de leurs serments.
11 Having armed each one of them not so much with the safety given by shield and lance as with thatconfidence which springs from noble language, he encouraged them al by describing to them a convincingdream -- a vision, as it were.	11 Ayant armé chacun d'eux moins de la sécurité que donnent les boucliers et les lances que del'assurance fondée sur les bonnes paroles, il leur raconta un songe digne de foi, une sorte de vision, qui les réjouittous.
12 What he had seen was this: Onias, the former high priest, that paragon of men, modest of bearingand gentle of manners, suitably eloquent and trained from boyhood in the practice of every virtue -- Onias wasstretching out his hands and praying for the whole Jewish community.	12 Voici le spectacle qui lui avait été offert: l'ex-grand prêtre Onias, cet homme de bien, d'unabord modeste et de moeurs douces, distingué dans son langage et adonné dès l'enfance à toutes les pratiques dela vertu, Onias étendait les mains et priait pour toute la communauté des Juifs.
13 Next, there appeared a man equal y remarkable for his great age and dignity and invested with amarvel ous and impressive air of majesty.	13 Ensuite avait apparu à Judas, de la même manière, un homme remarquable par ses cheveuxblancs et par sa dignité, revêtu d'une prodigieuse et souveraine majesté.
14 Onias began to speak: 'This is a man', he said, 'who loves his brothers and prays much for thepeople and the holy city-Jeremiah, the prophet of God.'	14 Prenant la parole, Onias disait: "Celui-ci est l'ami de ses frères, qui prie beaucoup pour lepeuple et pour la ville sainte tout entière, Jérémie, le prophète de Dieu."
15 Jeremiah then stretched out his right hand and presented Judas with a golden sword, saying as hegave it,	15 Puis Jérémie, avançant la main droite, donnait à Judas une épée d'or et prononçait cesparoles en la lui remettant:
16 'Take this holy sword as a gift from God; with it you wil shatter the enemy.'	16 "Prends ce glaive saint, il est un don de Dieu, avec lui tu briseras les ennemis."
17 Encouraged by the noble words of Judas, which had the power to inspire valour and give the youngthe spirit of mature men, they decided not to entrench themselves in a camp, but bravely to take the offensiveand, in hand-to-hand fighting, to commit the result to the fortune of war, since the city, their holy religion and theTemple were in danger.	17 Excités par les excellentes paroles de Judas, capables d'inspirer de la vaillance et de donneraux jeunes des âmes d'hommes faits, les Juifs décidèrent de ne pas se retrancher dans un camp, mais de prendrebravement l'offensive et, dans un corps à corps, de remettre la décision à la fortune des armes, puisque la ville, lareligion et le Sanctuaire étaient en péril,
18 Their concern for their wives and children, their brothers and relatives, had shrunk to minuteimportance; their chief and greatest fear was for the consecrated Temple.	18 car, dans cette lutte, l'inquiétude au sujet des femmes, des enfants, des frères et des prochesse réduisait à peu de chose, tandis que la plus grande et la première des craintes était pour le Temple consacré.
19 Those left behind in the city felt a similar anxiety, alarmed as they were about the forthcomingencounter in the open country.	19 L'angoisse de ceux qui avaient été laissés dans la ville n'était pas moindre, inquiets qu'ilsétaient au sujet de l'action qui allait se livrer en rase campagne.
20 Everyone now awaited the coming issue. The enemy had already concentrated their forces andstood formed up in order of battle, with the elephants drawn up in a strategic position and the cavalry disposedon the wings.	20 Pendant que tous attendaient le prochain dénouement et que déjà les ennemis, ayant opéréleur concentration, se rangeaient en ordre de bataille, les éléphants étant ramenés sur une position favorable et lacavalerie rangée sur les ailes,
21 Maccabaeus took note of these masses confronting him, the glittering array of armour and the fierceaspect of the elephants; then, raising his hands to heaven, he called on the Lord who works miracles, in theknowledge that it is not by force of arms but as he sees fit to decide, that victory is granted by him to such asdeserve it.	21 Maccabée observait ces masses imposantes, l'appareil varié de leurs armements et l'aspectfarouche des éléphants. Il leva les mains vers le ciel et invoqua le Seigneur qui opère les prodiges, sachant bienque ce n'est pas à l'aide des armes, mais selon ce qu'il juge, qu'il accorde la victoire à ceux qui en sont dignes.
22 His prayer was worded thus: 'You, Master, sent your angel in the days of Hezekiah king of Judaea,and he destroyed no less than one hundred and eighty-five thousand of Sennacherib's army;	22 Il prononça en ces termes l'invocation suivante: "O toi, Maître, tu as envoyé ton ange sousEzéchias, roi de la Judée, et il a exterminé 185.000 hommes de l'armée de Sennachérib;
23 now, once again, Sovereign of heaven, send a good angel before us to spread terror and dismay.	23 maintenant encore, ô Souverain des cieux, envoie un bon ange devant nous pour semer lacrainte et l'effroi.
24 May these men be struck down by the might of your arm, since they have come with blasphemy ontheir lips to attack your holy people.' And on these words he finished.	24 Que par la grandeur de ton bras soient frappés ceux qui sont venus, le blasphème à labouche, attaquer ton peuple saint!" Et il termina sur ces mots.
25 Nicanor and his men advanced to the sound of trumpets and war songs,	25 Or, tandis que les gens de Nikanor s'avançaient au son des trompettes et au chant du péan,
26 but the men of Judas closed with the enemy uttering invocations and prayers.	26 les hommes de Judas en vinrent aux mains avec l'ennemi en faisant des invocations et desprières.
27 Fighting with their hands and praying to God in their hearts, they cut down at least thirty-fivethousand men and were greatly cheered by this manifestation of God.	27 Combattant de leurs mains et priant Dieu de leur coeur, ils couchèrent sur le sol au moins35.000 hommes, et se réjouirent grandement de cette manifestation de Dieu.
28 When the engagement was over and they were withdrawing in triumph, they recognised Nicanor,lying dead in ful armour.	28 La besogne une fois terminée, et comme ils s'en retournaient avec joie, ils reconnurent queNikanor était tombé revêtu de son armure.
29 With shouting and confusion all around, they blessed the sovereign Master in their ancestral tongue.	29 Alors, au milieu des clameurs et de la confusion, ils bénissaient le souverain Maître dans lalangue de leurs pères.
30 He who, as protagonist, had devoted himself, body and soul, to his fel ow-citizens, and hadpreserved the love he felt even in youth for those of his own race, gave orders for Nicanor's head to be cut off,with his arm up to the shoulder, and taken to Jerusalem.	30 Celui qui au premier rang s'était consacré, corps et âme, à ses concitoyens, qui avaitconservé pour ses compatriotes l'affection du jeune âge, ordonna de couper la tête de Nikanor et son bras jusqu'àl'épaule, et de les porter à Jérusalem.
31 When he arrived there himself, he cal ed his countrymen together, stationed the priests in front of thealtar and then sent for the people from the Citadel.	31 Il s'y rendit lui-même et, après avoir convoqué ses compatriotes et placé les prêtres devantl'autel, il envoya chercher les gens de la Citadelle:
32 He showed them the head of the abominable Nicanor, and the hand which this infamous man hadstretched out so insolently against the holy House of the Almighty.	32 il leur montra la tête de l'abominable Nikanor et la main que cet infâme avait étendue avectant d'insolence contre la sainte Maison du Tout-Puissant.
33 Then, cutting out godless Nicanor's tongue, he gave orders for it to be fed piecemeal to the birds,and for the salary of his folly to be hung up in front of the Temple.	33 Puis, ayant coupé la langue de l'impie Nikanor, il dit qu'on la donnât par morceaux auxoiseaux et qu'on suspendît en face du Temple le salaire de sa folie.
34 At this, everyone sent blessings heavenwards to the glorious Lord, saying, 'Blessed be he who haspreserved his holy place from pol ution!'	34 Tous alors firent monter vers le ciel des bénédictions au Seigneur glorieux, en ces termes:"Béni soit Celui qui a gardé son saint lieu exempt de souillure!"
35 He hung Nicanor's head from the Citadel, a clear and evident sign to al of the help of the Lord.	35 Judas attacha la tête de Nikanor à la Citadelle, comme un signe manifeste et visible à tousdu secours du Seigneur.
36 They al decreed by public vote never to let that day go by unobserved, but to celebrate thethirteenth day of the twelfth month, cal ed Adar in Aramaic, the eve of what is called the Day of Mordecai.	36 Ils décrétèrent tous par un vote public de ne pas laisser passer ce jour inaperçu, mais decélébrer le treizième jour du douzième mois, appelé Adar en araméen, la veille du jour dit de Mardochée.
37 So ends the episode of Nicanor, and as, since then, the city has remained in the possession of theHebrews, I shal bring my own work to an end here too.	37 Ainsi se passèrent les choses concernant Nikanor, et, comme depuis ce temps-là la villedemeura en la possession des Hébreux, je finirai également mon ouvrage ici même.
38 If it is wel composed and to the point, that is just what I wanted. If it is worthless and mediocre, thatis al I could manage.	38 Si la composition en est bonne et réussie, c'est aussi ce que j'ai voulu. A-t-elle peu de valeuret ne dépasse-t-elle pas la médiocrité? C'est tout ce que j'ai pu faire...
39 Just as it is injurious to drink wine by itself, or again water alone, whereas wine mixed with water ispleasant and produces a delightful sense of wel -being, so skil in presenting the incidents is what delights theunderstanding of those who read the book. And here I close.	39 Comme il est nuisible de boire seulement du vin ou seulement de l'eau, tandis que le vinmêlé à l'eau est agréable et produit une délicieuse jouissance, de même c'est l'art de disposer le récit qui charmel'entendement de ceux qui lisent le livre. C'est donc ici que j'y mettrai fin.
