1 In the year 151, Demetrius son of Seleucus left Rome and arrived with a few men at a town on thecoast, where he inaugurated his reign.	1 Nell' anne CLI (del regno de' Greci) si partì di Roma Demetrio, figliuolo di Seleuco, e con poca gente se ne venne nella città marittima, e quivi incominciò a regnare.
2 It so happened that, as he was entering the royal residence of his ancestors, the army capturedAntiochus and Lysias, and intended to bring them to him.	2 E avvenne, che poi ch' egli fu tornato nella casa del regno de' suoi padri (cioè in Antiochia), il suo esèrcito prese lo re Antioco e Lisia, e menavagli presi dinanzi da lui.
3 On hearing this, he said, 'Keep them out of my sight.'	3 Ma da poi ch' egli il seppe, fece comandare loro, che non gli mostrassono le faccie loro.
4 The army put them to death, and Demetrius ascended his throne.	4 E allora quelli dell' oste si li uccisono; e così Demetrio rimase (re e signore, stando) sopra la sedia del suo regno.
5 Next, al those Israelites without law or piety, led by Alcimus, whose ambition was to become highpriest,	5 Ora in quel tempo vennero a lui uomini rei e malvagi del popolo d' Israel, e Alcimo fu loro (duttore e loro) guidatore, il quale voleva essere fatto (sommo) sacerdote.
6 approached the king and denounced our people to him. 'Judas and his brothers', they said, 'have kil edal your friends, and he has driven us out of our country.	6 E accusarono il popolo (di Dio) dinanzi dal re, dicendo: Giuda (Maccabeo) e li suoi fratelli hanno (consumati e) diserti i tuoi amici, e noi hanno dispersi delle nostre terre.
7 Send someone now whom you can trust; let him go and see the wholesale ruin Judas has brought onus and on the king's dominions, and let him punish the wretches and al who assist them.'	7 E perciò (signore) mandavi alcuno uomo, di cui tu ti fidi, il quale vi vada, e vegga la distruzione la quale egli hae fatta nelle regioni del re, e come egli hae (empiutati e gravati) li tuoi amici e i loro aiutatori.
8 The king chose Bacchides, one of the Friends of the King, governor of Transeuphrates, an importantpersonage in the kingdom and loyal to the king.	8 Allora lo re elesse uno delli suoi amici, il quale signoreggiava di là dal fiume grande nello suo reame, e avea nome Bacchide; il quale Bacchide era molto fedele allo re; e mandollo in Giudea,
9 He sent him with the godless Alcimus, whom he confirmed in the high priesthood, with orders to exactretribution from the Israelites.	9 ...; e ordinoe sacerdote il malvagio Alcimo ( ch' era guidatore delli malvagi uomini del popolo d' Israel), e comandoe che (Bacchide) facesse vendetta de' figliuoli d' Israel.
10 So they set out with a large force and, on reaching Judaea, sent emissaries to Judas and his brotherswith proposals peaceable yet treacherous.	10 E così si levarono, e vennero con grande oste nella terra de' Giudei, e mandarono (dinanzi da loro) ambasciatori, i quali parlarono a Giuda e ai fratelli parole di pace sotto inganno di tradimento.
11 The latter, however, did not put any faith in their words, aware that they had come with a large force.	11 E non diedono (Giuda e' fratelli) fede alle loro parole; però che si avviddono ch' erano venuti con troppo grande oste.
12 Nevertheless, a commission of scribes presented themselves before Alcimus and Bacchides, to suefor just terms.	12 Ma pertanto gli scribi della gente Giudea si radunarono, e vennero ad Alcimo e a Bacchide, a richiedere (e addomandavano ragione e) giustizia.
13 The first among the Israelites to ask them for peace terms were the Hasidaeans,	13 E quelli ch' erano più inanzi iufra' figliuoli d' Israel cercavano pace (e addomandavanla per lo popolo).
14 who reasoned thus, 'This is a priest of Aaron's line who has come with the armed forces; he wil notwrong us.'	14 E dicevano intra loro; questo è uomo sacerdote del seme di Aaron, egli non c' ingannerà.
15 He did in fact discuss peace terms with them and gave them his oath, 'We shal not attempt to injureyou or your friends.'	15 Ed egli parlò loro pacificamente, e giuroe loro, dicendo: noi non vi faremo male, nè eziandio agli amici vostri.
16 They believed him, but he arrested sixty of them and put them to death on one day, fulfil ing the wordsof scripture:	16 E loro credettono a lui; ed egli prese di loro LX uomini, e tutti gli uccise in uno giorno, secondo quella parola la quale è scritta (che dice):
17 They have scattered the bodies of your faithful, and shed their blood all round Jerusalem, leaving noone to bury them!	17 loro sparsono la carne e il sangue de' tuoi santi nel circuito di Ierusalem; e non era chi gli seppellisse.
18 At this, fear and dread gripped the whole people. 'There is no truth or virtue in them,' they said, 'theyhave broken their agreement and their sworn oath.'	18 E così cadde paura e tremore sopra tutto il popolo, dicendo che in loro non era verità nè giudicio, conciofosse cosa che aveano rotto ogni loro ordinamento e sacramento che fatto aveano.
19 Bacchides then left Jerusalem and encamped at Beth-Zeth, and from there sent and arrested many ofthe men who had deserted him and a few of our people too; he had them kil ed and thrown down the great wel .	19 Allora Bacchide mosse il campo di Ierusalem, e puosesi in Betzeca; e mandoe, e prese molti di quelli che s' erano fuggiti; e uccise alquanti uomini del popolo, e gittogli nel grande pozzo.
20 He then put Alcimus in charge of the province, leaving an army with him to support him; Bacchideshimself returned to the king.	20 E (tutta la contrada lasciò e) commise la regione ad Alcimo, e lasciogli gente in suo aiuto e defensione. E Bacchide si ritornò al re.
21 Alcimus continued his struggle to become high priest,	21 E Alcimo si sforzava quanto poteva per lo principato del suo sacerdozio.
22 and al who were disturbing the peace of their own people ral ied to him, and, having won control ofJudaea, did much harm in Israel.	22 Radunaronsi con lui tutti quelli che turbavano il popolo, e tennero la terra de' Giudei, e feciono grave male nel popolo di Dio.
23 Seeing that al the wrongs done to the Israelites by Alcimus and his supporters exceeded what thegentiles had done,	23 E quando Giuda ebbe veduto (e sentito) tutti li mali che faceva Alcimo, e quelli ch' erano con lui, incontro alli figliuoli d' Israel, (e tra questa gente erano de' ribellati del popolo d' Israel), i quali facevano peggio che le genti strane,
24 Judas went right round the whole territory of Judaea to take vengeance on those who had desertedhim and to prevent their free movement about the country.	24 e uscì fuori per tutti i confini de' Giudei d' attorno, e fece vendetta degli uomini peccatori; e d'allora inanzi si rimasono di correre il paese.
25 When Alcimus saw how strong Judas and his supporters had grown and realised that he waspowerless to resist them, he went back to the king, to whom he made malicious accusations against them.	25 Onde veggendo Alcimo che Giuda avea avuto vittoria insieme con quelli ch' erano con lui, e conoscendo che non si poteva riparare incontra di loro, tornò al re, e accusogli di molti peccati.
26 The king sent Nicanor, one of his generals ranking as Il ustrious and a bitter enemy of Israel, withorders to exterminate the people.	26 Il re mandò contro a loro Nicanore, il quale era uno de' più nobili uomini e principi ch' egli avesse, ed era nemico della gente Giudea; e comandogli che distruggesse quel popolo.
27 Reaching Jerusalem with a large force, Nicanor sent a friendly, yet treacherous, message to Judasand his brothers, as follows:	27 Adunque venne Nicanore in Ierusalem con grande oste, e mandò (pregando) a Giuda e a' fratelli parole di pace sotto inganno di tradimento,
28 'Let us have no fighting between you and me; I shall come with a smal escort for a peaceful meetingwith you.'	28 dicendoli: piacciavi che battaglia non sia intra voi e noi; certo io verrò con poca gente, per vedermi insieme con esso voi in pace.
29 He met Judas and they exchanged friendly greetings; the enemy, however, had made preparations toabduct Judas.	29 E (liberamente) venne a Giuda, e salutaronsi insieme pacificamente; e non di meno li nimici erano apparecchiati a pigliare Giuda.
30 When Judas became aware of Nicanor's treacherous purpose in coming to see him, he took fright andrefused any further meeting.	30 Ma Giuda sì s' avvidde, ch' egli falsamente era venuto a lui; dond' egli si partì, e non volse da indi inanzi vedere la faccia sua.
31 Nicanor then realised that his plan had been discovered, and took the field against Judas, to givebattle near Caphar-Salama.	31 E quando Nicanore vidde che il suo ordinamento era scoperto, uscì alla battaglia contro a Giuda a lato a Cafarsalama.
32 About five hundred of Nicanor's men fell; the rest took refuge in the City of David.	32 E caddono di quelli di Nicanore appresso a cinque milia uomini; e gli altri si raccolsono nella cittade di David.
33 After these events Nicanor went up to Mount Zion. Some of the priests came out of the Holy Placewith some elders, to give him a friendly welcome and show him the burnt offering being presented for the king.	33 Dopo queste cose salie Nicanore nel monte di Sion; e vennergli incontro li sacerdoti del popolo, e salutarolo in pace, e mostrarongli i sacrificii i quali s' offerivano per lo re.
34 But he ridiculed them, laughed at them, defiled them and used insolent language, swearing in hisrage,	34 Ed egli se ne fece beffe, e dispregiandoli gli (corruppe e) contaminò; e parlò con superbia,
35 'Unless Judas is handed over to me this time with his army, as soon as I am safely back, I promiseyou, I shal burn this building down!'	35 e con ira e giurando disse: se Giuda e la sua oste non fia renduto nelle mie mani, immantinente ch' io tornerò, arderò io questa casa. E uscis-sene fuori con grande furore.
36 Then he went off in a fury. At this, the priests went in again, and stood weeping in front of the altarand the Temple, saying,	36 Allora i sacerdoti si tornarono dentro, e istettono dinanzi dalla faccia del tempio, e piangendo dissono:
37 'You have chosen this house to be cal ed by your name, to be a house of prayer and petition for yourpeople.	37 O Signore Iddio, tu eleggesti questa casa a chiamare il santo nome tuo in essa, e acciò ch' ella fusse casa di orazione nel tuo popolo.
38 Take vengeance on this man and on his army, and let them fal by the sword; remember theirblasphemies and give them no respite.'	38 Or fa dunque vendetta di questo popolo e della sua oste, sì che per lo taglio delle spade caggiano; e ricorditi delle loro bestemie, e non permettere che loro durino.
39 Nicanor left Jerusalem and encamped at Beth-Horon, where he was joined by an army from Syria.	39 E (per tal modo come è detto) si partì Nicanore di Ierusalem, e puose il campo a Beteron; e vennegli incontro (in suo aiuto) l'oste di Siria.
40 Judas, meanwhile, camped at Adasa with three thousand men, and offered this prayer,	40 Ma Giuda giunse in Adarsa con tre milia uomini; e orò Giuda, e disse:
41 'When the king's envoys blasphemed, your angel went out and struck down one hundred and eighty-five thousand of his men.	41 O Signore Iddio, il quale mandasti il tuo angelo il quale percosse (e isconfisse) CLXXXV. M di uomini, i quali essendo mandati dallo re Sennacherib, (che) ti aveano biastemmato;
42 In the same way let us see you crush this army today, so that everyone else may know that this manhas spoken blasphemously against your sanctuary: pass judgement on him as his wickedness deserves!'	42 così isconfiggi oggi questa oste nel nostro conspetto, acciò che loro sappiano, e tutti gli altri, ch' egli parloe isconciamente sopra i santi tuoi; e giùdicalo secondo la sua malizia.
43 The armies met in battle on the thirteenth of the month Adar, and Nicanor's army was crushed, hehimself being the first to fal in the battle.	43 Adunque a' XIII di marzo si fece la battaglia, ove l'oste di Nicanore fue isconfitta, e Nicanore fue il primo morto.
44 When Nicanor's soldiers saw him fal , they threw down their arms and fled.	44 Onde tutta la sua oste, veggendo Nicanore essere caduto morto, gittarono le loro armi, e fuggirono via.
45 The Jews pursued them a day's journey, from Adasa to the approaches of Gezer; they sounded theirtrumpets in warning as they fol owed them,	45 E loro gli seguitarono una giornata da Adazer infino a Gazara, sonando loro sempre di dietro le loro trombe, significando la loro isconfitta.
46 and people came out of al the surrounding Judaean vil ages to encircle the fugitives, who then turnedback on their own men. Al fel by the sword, not one being left alive.	46 Onde (la gente Giudea) uscirono di tutte le castella d' intorno, e perseguitavangli dividendogli in diverse parti; e poi si rivolgevano a ciascuno di loro, e percuotevangli con l'arme (e uccidevangli), onde loro furono tutti morti, si che pure uno non ne iscampoe.
47 Having col ected the spoils and booty, they cut off Nicanor's head and the right hand he had stretchedout in a display of insolence; these were taken and displayed within sight of Jerusalem.	47 E presono tutte le loro ispoglie, ed ebbono grande preda; e poi mozzarono il capo a Nicanore (così morto), e la mano diritta la quale egli avea distesa con superbia, e portaronla seco e appiccaronla dinanzi a Ierusalem.
48 The people were overjoyed and kept that day as a great holiday:	48 Onde tutto il popolo si rallegroe, e feciono grande festa in quello dì.
49 indeed they decided to celebrate it annual y on the thirteenth of Adar.	49 Di che ordinò (Giuda Maccabeo), che ogni anno in cotal dì si facesse festa a dì XIII di marzo (in memoria di tanta vittoria).
50 For a short while Judaea enjoyed peace.	50 E si riposò alquanto tempo la terra de' Giudei.
