1 When the uproar of those crowding round the council had subsided, Holofernes, general-in-chief of theAssyrian army, reprimanded Achior in front of the whole crowd of foreigners and Ammonites.	1 E dopo che cessarono di parlare, rimase Oloferne molto indignato, e disse ad Achior:
2 'Achior, who do you think you are, you and the Ephraimite mercenaries, playing the prophet like this withus today, and trying to dissuade us from making war on the people of Israel? You claim their God wil protectthem. And who is God if not Nebuchadnezzar? He himself wil display his power and wipe them off the face ofthe earth, and their God wil certainly not save them.	2 Però che tu ci hai profetato, dicendo che la gente d' Israel sarà difesa dal suo Iddio, acciò ch' io ti dimostri che non è Iddio in terra, se non Nabucodonosor,
3 But we, his servants, shal destroy them as easily as a single individual. They can never resist thestrength of our cavalry.	3 quando noi avremo percossi tutti loro, come se percuotessimo uno uomo, allora e tu con loro perirai di coltello degli Assirii, e tutto Israel insieme con te sarà posto in perdizione;
4 We shal burn them all. Their mountains will be drunk with their blood and their plains filled with theircorpses. Far from being able to resist us, every one of them wil die; thus says King Nebuchadnezzar, lord of thewhole world. For he has spoken, and his words will not prove empty.	4 e proverai che Nabucodonosor sia signore di tutta la terra; e allora il coltello del mio esercito passerà per li lati del corpo tuo, e perforato cadrai fra li feriti (e uccisi) d' Israel, e non respirerai più, persino che tu sii esterminato con loro.
5 As for you, Achior, you Ammonite mercenary, who in a rash moment said these words, you wil not seemy face again until the day when I have taken my revenge on this brood from Egypt.	5 Ma se tu pensi che la tua profezia sia vera, non s'attristi il tuo viso; e non rimanga più la faccia tua pallida, se tu pensi che il mio parlare non abbi effetto.
6 And then the swords of my soldiers and the spears of my officers wil pierce your sides. You wil falamong their wounded, the moment I turn on Israel.	6 E acciò che tu conoschi che tu insieme con loro abbi a provare per esperienza questo ch' io ho detto, ecco ch' io in quest' ora ti voglio mandare a quello popolo, e accompagnarti con loro, acciò che quando loro riceveranno le pene degne del mio coltello, tu rimanghi sottoposto a questa vendetta.
7 My servants wil now take you into the hill-country and leave you near one of the towns in the passes;	7 Allora Oloferne comandò alli servi suoi, che pigliassero Achior, e che lo menassero in Betulia e desserlo nelle mani de' figliuoli d' Israel.
8 you wil not die, until you share their ruin.	8 E pigliato che l'ebbono i servi di Oloferne, andarono per i campi (verso Betulia); e quando furono prossimi alli monti, uscirono fuori contro a loro gli uomini che gettavano le pietre con le fionde.
9 No need to look so sad if you cherish the secret hope that they wil not be captured! I have spoken; noneof my words will prove idle.'	9 Loro, vedendo questo, declinarono a lato ai monti, e legorono Achior ad uno arbore con le mani e con i piedi; e così legato con le funi lo lasciorono, e ritornarono al suo signore.
10 Holofernes having commanded his tent-orderlies to seize Achior, to take him to Bethulia and to handhim over to the Israelites,	10 E (veduto questo) i figliuoli d'Israel scesero di Betulia, e vennero a lui. Lo qual isciolto, lo menarono in Betulia; e posto nel mezzo del popolo, addimandarono quale fosse la cagione di questo, che gli Assirii l'avessono lasciato a questo modo legato.
11 the orderlies took him, escorted him out of the camp and across the plain, and then, making for the hil -country, reached the springs below Bethulia.	11 In quel tempo erano in quello luogo prìncipi Ozia figliuolo di Mica della tribù di Simeon e Carmi il qual anco si chiamava Gotoniel.
12 As soon as the men of the town sighted them, they snatched up their weapons, left the town and madefor the mountain tops, while al the slingers pelted them with stones to prevent them from coming up.	12 E Achior, istando nel mezzo degli antichi e nel cospetto di tutti, disse tutte quelle cose che lui avea detto essendo dimandato da Oloferne, e come il popolo di Oloferne lo avea voluto uccidere per cagione di questa risposta;
13 However, they managed to take cover at the foot of the slope, where they bound Achior and left himlying at the bottom of the mountain and returned to their master.	13 e a che modo Oloferne si era turbato, e che per questo comandò che lui vi fosse dato nelle mani, acciò che quando lui vincerà i figliuoli d' Israel, che anco Achior sia per suo comandamento con diversi supplizii ucciso, per questo che lui disse che il Dio del cielo sarà difensore d' Israel.
14 The Israelites then came down from their town, stopped by him, unbound him and took him to Bethulia,where they brought him before the chief men of the town,	14 E avendo Achior esposto tutte queste cose, tutto il popolo si chinò con la faccia sua, adorando il Signore; e tutti, di una volontà, con una universal lamentazione e pianto pregavano,
15 who at that time were Uzziah son of Micah of the tribe of Simeon, Chabris son of Gothoniel andCharmis son of Melchiel.	15 dicendo: Signore Iddio del cielo e della terra, riguarda alla superbia di questa gente e alla nostra umiltà, e considera alla faccia de' tuoi servi, e dimostra che tu non abbandoni quelli che si confidano di te; e quelli che presumono di sè, e confidansi di gloriarsi nella sua virtù, tu gli umillii.
16 These summoned al the elders of the town. The young men and the women also hurried to theassembly. Achior was made to stand with al the people surrounding him, and Uzziah questioned him about whathad happened.	16 E compiuto il pianto, e compiuta la orazione del popolo per tutto il dì, consolorono Achior,
17 He answered by tel ing them what had been said at Holofernes' council, and what he himself had saidin the presence of the Assyrian leaders, and how Holofernes had bragged of what he would do to the House ofIsrael.	17 dicendo: lo Dio de' padri nostri, la virtù del quale tu hai predicato, lui ti darà questa retribuzione, che tu piuttosto vederai la sua distruzione.
18 At this the people fel to the ground and worshipped God.	18 E conciosia cosa che Iddio abbi dato questa libertà ai servi suoi, sia anco Dio teco nel mezzo di noi; chè sì come a te piacerà, così tu conversi [nosco] con tutti i tuoi.
19 'Lord God of heaven,' they cried, 'take notice of their arrogance and have pity on the humiliation of ourrace. Look kindly today on those who are consecrated to you.'	19 Allora Ozia, finito lo consiglio, lo ricevè in casa sua, e fece una grande cena.
20 They then spoke reassuringly to Achior and praised him warmly.	20 E chiamati tutti li principali e onorati insieme, compiuto lo digiuno, cenorono.
21 After the assembly Uzziah took him home and gave a banquet for the elders; al that night they cal edon the God of Israel for help.	21 E dopo questo, chiamato tutto il popolo, per tutta la notte stettero nella chiesa in orazione, dimandando adiutorio da Dio d' Israel.
