NEW JERUSALEM	LA SACRA BIBBIA
1 When the men who were stil in their tents heard the news they were appal ed.	1 Quando quelli che erano ancora nelle loro tende udirono ciò che era accaduto, rimasero sgomenti;
2 Panic-stricken and trembling, no two of them could keep together, the rout was complete, with oneaccord they fled along every track across the plain or through the mountains.	2 colpiti da terrore e panico, nessuno volle più restare vicino all'altro, ma tutti con lo stesso slancio si dispersero fuggendo per ogni sentiero della pianura e della montagna.
3 The men who had been bivouacking in the mountains round Bethulia were fleeing too. Then al theIsraelite warriors charged down on them.	3 Anche quelli che erano accampati sulla montagna intorno a Betulia si diedero alla fuga. Allora gl'Israeliti, cioè quanti tra loro erano capaci di combattere, si riversarono su di loro.
4 Uzziah sent messengers to Betomasthaim, Bebai, Choba, Kola, throughout the whole territory of Israel,to inform them of what had happened and to urge them al to hurl themselves on the enemy and annihilate them.	4 Ozia mandò subito messi a Betomastaim, a Bebai, a Coba, a Cola e in tutto il territorio d'Israele ad annunciare ciò che era accaduto e ad invitarli a scagliarsi contro i nemici per sterminarli.
5 As soon as the Israelites heard the news, they fel on them as one man and massacred them al theway to Choba. The men of Jerusalem and the entire mountain country also ral ied to them, once they had beeninformed of the events in the enemy camp. Then the men of Gilead and Galilee attacked them on the flank andstruck at them fiercely till they neared Damascus and its territory.	5 Appena gl'Israeliti udirono ciò, tutti concordemente si precipitarono su di essi e li fecero a pezzi giungendo fino a Coba. Sopraggiunsero anche quelli di Gerusalemme e di tutta la regione montuosa, poiché era stato loro annunciato ciò che era accaduto nell'accampamento dei loro nemici. Gli abitanti di Gàlaad e di Galilea li accerchiarono di fianco colpendoli con grande strage, arrivando fino oltre Damasco e il suo territorio.
6 Al the other inhabitants of Bethulia fel on the Assyrian camp and looted it to their great profit.	6 Gli altri abitanti di Betulia fecero irruzione nel campo assiro e lo depredarono, diventando oltremodo ricchi.
7 The Israelites returning from the slaughter seized what was left. The hamlets and vil ages of themountain country and the plain also captured a great deal of booty, since there were vast stores of it.	7 Gl'Israeliti ritornati dalla strage s'impadronirono del resto, così che i villaggi e le borgate della montagna e del piano vennero in possesso di abbondante bottino, poiché ve n'era una quantità molto considerevole.
8 Joakim the high priest and the entire Council of Elders of Israel, who were in Jerusalem, came to gazeon the benefits that the Lord had lavished on Israel and to see Judith and congratulate her.	8 Allora il sommo sacerdote Ioakìm e il consiglio degli anziani degl'Israeliti, che abitavano in Gerusalemme, vennero a vedere i benefici che il Signore aveva concesso ad Israele, e inoltre per vedere Giuditta e salutarla.
9 On coming to her house, they blessed her with one accord, saying: You are the glory of Jerusalem!You are the great pride of Israel! You are the highest honour of our race!	9 Appena entrarono da lei, tutti concordemente le rivolsero parole di benedizione dicendole: "Tu sei la gloria di Gerusalemme, sei il grande orgoglio d'Israele, sei lo splendido onore della nostra stirpe.
10 By doing all this with your own hand you have deserved wel of Israel, and God has approved whatyou have done. May you be blessed by the Lord Almighty in al the days to come! And the people al said,'Amen!'	10 Compiendo tutto questo con la tua mano, hai operato nobili cose a vantaggio d'Israele e di esse Dio si è compiaciuto. Sii benedetta in eterno da parte del Signore onnipotente!". Tutto il popolo soggiunse: "Così sia".
11 The people looted the camp for thirty days. They gave Judith the tent of Holofernes, al his silver plate,his divans, his drinking bowls and all his furniture. She took this, loaded her mule, harnessed her carts andheaped the things into them.	11 Per trenta giorni tutto il popolo fece bottino dell'accampamento. A Giuditta fu data la tenda di Oloferne, tutte le argenterie, i divani, i vasi e tutto l'arredamento. Essa prese tutto ciò e lo caricò sulla sua mula; poi aggiogò i suoi carri e ammonticchiò tutto sopra.
12 Al the women of Israel, hurrying to see her, formed choirs of dancers in her honour. Judith tookwands of vine-leaves in her hand and distributed them to the women who accompanied her;	12 Intanto tutte le donne d'Israele accorsero per vederla, la elogiarono ed eseguirono tra loro una danza in onore di lei. Essa prese nelle sue mani dei tirsi e li distribuì alle donne che l'accompagnavano.
13 she and her companions put on wreaths of olive. Then she took her place at the head of theprocession and led the women as they danced. Al the men of Israel, armed and garlanded, followed them,singing hymns.	13 Poi essa e quelle che erano con lei s'incoronarono di ramoscelli di olivo, e mettendosi a capo di tutto il popolo Giuditta guidò la danza di tutte le donne, mentre tutti gl'Israeliti seguivano rivestiti delle loro armi, portando corone e cantando inni con le loro bocche.
14 With all Israel round her, Judith broke into this song of thanksgiving and the whole people sang thishymn:	14 In mezzo a tutto Israele Giuditta intonò questo canto di ringraziamento e tutto il popolo ripeteva a gran voce questa lode.
