Nehemiah 5

NEW JERUSALEM	DIODATI
1 There was a great outcry from the people, and from their wives, against their brother Jews.	1 OR vi fu un gran grido del popolo, e delle lor mogli, contro a’ Giudei lor fratelli.
2 Some said, 'We are having to pledge our sons and daughters to get enough grain to eat and keep usalive.'	2 E vi erano di quelli che dicevano: I nostri figliuoli, e le nostre figliuole, e noi siamo in gran numero; facciasi adunque che riceviamo del grano da mangiare, per vivere.
3 Others said, 'We are having to mortgage our fields, our vineyards and our houses to get grain becauseof the shortage.'	3 Altri vi erano che dicevano: Noi impegnammo i nostri campi, e le nostre vigne, e le nostre case; facciasi adunque che riceviamo del grano in questa carestia.
4 Stil others said, 'We have had to borrow money on our fields and our vineyards to pay the royal tax;	4 Altri vi erano che dicevano: Noi abbiamo presi in prestanza, sopra i nostri campi, e sopra le nostre vigne, danari, per pagare il tributo del re.
5 and though we belong to the same race as our brothers, and our children are as good as theirs, weshall have to sel our sons and our daughters into slavery; some of our daughters have been sold into slaveryalready. We can do nothing about it, since our fields and our vineyards now belong to others.'	5 Ed ora, benchè la nostra carne sia come la carne de’ nostri fratelli, e i nostri figliuoli sieno come i lor figliuoli; ecco, noi siamo in sul punto di mettere i nostri figliuoli e le nostre figliuole per servi; e già alcune delle nostre figliuole sono in servitù; e noi non abbiamo alcun modo in mano; e i nostri campi e le nostre vigne sono in mano di altri
6 When I heard their complaints and these words I was very angry.	6 E quando io ebbi udito il grido loro e queste parole, io mi crucciai forte.
7 Having turned the matter over in my mind, I reprimanded the nobles and the officials as fol ows, 'Eachof you is imposing a burden on his brother.' Summoning a great assembly to deal with them,	7 Ed avendo preso consiglio fra me stesso, sgridai gli uomini notabili ed i magistrati, e dissi loro: Riscotete voi così i debiti, ciascuno dal suo fratello? Ed io adunai contro a loro la gran raunanza.
8 I said to them, 'To the best of our power, we have redeemed our brother Jews who were forced to selthemselves to foreigners, and now you in turn are sel ing your brothers, for them to be bought back by us!' Theywere silent and could find nothing to say.	8 E dissi loro: Noi abbiamo, in quanto è stato in noi, riscattati i nostri fratelli Giudei che erano stati venduti alle genti; e voi vendereste ancora i vostri fratelli; o essi si venderebbero a noi! Allora essi si tacquero, e non sepper che dire.
9 'What you are doing', I went on, 'is wrong. Do you not want to walk in the fear of our God and escapethe sneers of the nations, our enemies?	9 Ed io dissi: Ciò che voi fate non è buono; non dovete voi camminar nel timor dell’Iddio nostro, per tema del vituperio delle genti nostre nemiche?
10 I too, with my brothers and retainers, have lent them money and grain. Let us cancel these pledges.	10 Io ancora, e i miei fratelli, e i miei servitori, abbiamo prestati a costoro danari, e grano; deh! rimettiamo loro questo debito.
11 This very day return them their fields, their vineyards, their olive groves and their houses, and cancelthe claim on the money, grain, new wine and olive oil, which you have lent them.'	11 Deh! rendete loro oggi i lor campi, le lor vigne, i loro uliveti, e le lor case; e rimettete loro la centesima de’ danari, del grano, del vino, e dell’olio, la quale voi riscotete da loro.
12 'We shall make restitution,' they replied, 'we shal claim nothing more from them; we shal do as yousay.' Summoning the priests, I then made them swear to do as they had promised.	12 Ed essi dissero: Noi la renderemo loro, e non domanderemo loro nulla; noi faremo così come tu dici. Allora io chiamai i sacerdoti, e li feci giurare che farebbero così.
13 Then, shaking out the fold of my garment, I said, 'May God thus shake out of house and possessionsanyone who does not make good this promise; may he be shaken out thus and left empty!' And the wholeassembly answered, 'Amen' and praised Yahweh. And the people kept this promise.	13 Oltre a ciò, io scossi il grembo della mia vesta, e dissi: Così scuota Iddio dalla sua propria casa, e dalle sue facoltà, chiunque non metterà questa parola ad effetto; e così sia scosso e vuoto. E tutta la raunanza disse: Così sia. E lodarono il Signore. E il popolo fece secondo quella parola
14 What is more, from the time when the king appointed me to be their governor in Judah, from thetwentieth to the thirty-second year of King Artaxerxes, for twelve years, neither I nor my brothers ever levied thegovernor's subsistence al owance,	14 Eziandio dal dì che il re mi ordinò per esser lor governatore nel paese di Giuda, cioè, dall’anno ventesimo del re Artaserse, fino all’anno trentaduesimo, che son dodici anni, io ed i miei fratelli non mangiammo della provvisione assegnata al governatore.
15 whereas the former governors, my predecessors, had been a burden on the people, from whom theytook forty silver shekels a day for food and wine, while their attendants oppressed the people too. But I, fearingGod, never did this.	15 Benchè i precedenti governatori ch’erano stati davanti a me, avessero gravato il popolo, e avessero presa quella da lui, in pane ed in vino; e dipoi in quaranta sicli d’argento; e che anche i lor servitori avessero signoreggiato sopra il popolo; ma io non feci così, per lo timor di Dio.
16 Also, not acquiring any land, I concentrated on the work of this wal and all my attendants joined in thework together, too.	16 Ed anche io ristorai la parte mia in questo lavoro delle mura, e non acquistammo alcuna possessione; e tutti i miei servitori erano quivi adunati per l’opera.
17 Furthermore, magistrates and officials to the number of a hundred and fifty ate at my table, not tomention those who came to us from the surrounding nations.	17 Oltre a ciò, cencinquant’uomini de’ Giudei e de’ magistrati, e quelli che venivano a noi dalle genti ch’erano d’intorno a noi, erano alla mia tavola.
18 Every day, one ox, six fine sheep, as wel as poultry, were prepared for me; every ten days, skins ofwine were brought in bulk. But even so, I never claimed the governor's subsistence al owance, since the peoplealready had burden enough to bear.	18 Or quello che mi si apparecchiava per giorno era un bue e sei montoni scelti; mi si apparecchiava ancora dell’uccellame; e di dieci in dieci giorni queste cose si apparecchiavano con ogni sorta di vini copiosamente; e pure, con tutto ciò, io non domandai la provvisione assegnata al governatore; perciocchè quella servitù sarebbe stata grave a questo popolo.
19 To my credit, my God, remember all I have done for this people.	19 Ricordati, o Dio mio, di me in bene, per tutto quello che io ho fatto inverso questo popolo
