1 Samuel 9

NEW AMERICAN BIBLE	JERUSALEM
1 There was a stalwart man from Benjamin named Kish, who was the son of Abiel, son of Zeror, son of Becorath, son of Aphiah, a Benjaminite.	1 Il y avait, parmi les Benjaminites, un homme qui s'appelait Qish, fils d'Abiel, fils de Ceror, fils deBekorat, fils d'Aphiah; c'était un Benjaminite, homme de condition.
2 He had a son named Saul, who was a handsome young man. There was no other Israelite handsomer than Saul; he stood head and shoulders above the people.	2 Il avait un fils nommé Saül, qui était dans la fleur de l'âge et beau. Nul parmi les Israélites n'étaitplus beau que lui: de l'épaule et au-dessus, il dépassait tout le monde.
3 Now the asses of Saul's father, Kish, had wandered off. Kish said to his son Saul, "Take one of the servants with you and go out and hunt for the asses."	3 Les ânesses appartenant à Qish, père de Saül, s'étant égarées, Qish dit à son fils Saül: "Prends avectoi l'un des serviteurs et va, pars à la recherche des ânesses."
4 Accordingly they went through the hill country of Ephraim, and through the land of Shalishah. Not finding them there, they continued through the land of Shaalim without success. They also went through the land of Benjamin, but they failed to find the animals.	4 Ils traversèrent la montagne d'Ephraïm, ils traversèrent le pays de Shalisha sans rien trouver; ilstraversèrent le pays de Shaalim: elles n'y étaient pas; ils traversèrent le pays de Benjamin sans rien trouver.
5 When they came to the land of Zuph, Saul said to the servant who was with him, "Come, let us turn back, lest my father forget about the asses and become anxious about us."	5 Lorsqu'ils furent arrivés au pays de Cuph, Saül dit au serviteur qui l'accompagnait: "Allons!Retournons, de peur que mon père ne laisse les ânesses pour s'inquiéter de nous."
6 The servant replied, "Listen! There is a man of God in this city, a man held in high esteem; all that he says is sure to come true. Let us go there now! Perhaps he can tell us how to accomplish our errand."	6 Mais celui-ci lui répondit: "Voici qu'un homme de Dieu habite cette ville-là. C'est un hommeréputé: tout ce qu'il dit arrive sûrement. Allons-y donc, peut-être nous éclairera-t-il sur le voyage que nous avonsentrepris."
7 But Saul said to his servant, "If we go, what can we offer the man? There is no bread in our bags, and we have no present to give the man of God. What have we?"	7 Saül dit à son serviteur: "A supposer que nous y allions, qu'offrirons-nous à l'homme? Le pain adisparu de nos sacs et nous n'avons pas de rétribution à offrir à l'homme de Dieu. Qu'avons-nous d'autre?"
8 Again the servant answered Saul, "I have a quarter of a silver shekel. If I give that to the man of God, he will tell us our way."	8 Le serviteur reprit la parole et dit à Saül: "Il se trouve que j'ai en main un quart de sicle d'argent, jele donnerai à l'homme de Dieu et il nous éclairera sur notre voyage."
9 (In former times in Israel, anyone who went to consult God used to say, "Come, let us go to the seer." For he who is now called prophet was formerly called seer.)	9 Autrefois en Israël, voici ce qu'on disait en allant consulter Dieu: "Allons donc chez le voyant",car au lieu de "prophète" comme aujourd'hui on disait autrefois "voyant."
10 Saul then said to his servant, "Well said! Come on, let us go!" And they went to the city where the man of God lived.	10 Saül dit à son serviteur: "Tu as bien parlé, allons donc!" Et ils allèrent à la ville où se trouvaitl'homme de Dieu.
11 As they were going up the ascent to the city, they met some girls coming out to draw water and inquired of them, "Is the seer in town?"	11 Comme ils gravissaient la montée de la ville, ils rencontrèrent des jeunes filles qui sortaient pourpuiser l'eau et ils leur demandèrent: "Le voyant est-il là?"
12 The girls answered, "Yes, there--straight ahead. Hurry now; just today he came to the city, because the people have a sacrifice today on the high place.	12 Elles leur répondirent en ces termes: "Il est là, il t'a juste précédé. Hâte-toi maintenant: il est venuaujourd'hui en ville, car il y a aujourd'hui un sacrifice pour le peuple sur le haut lieu.
13 When you enter the city, you may reach him before he goes up to the high place to eat. The people will not eat until he arrives; only after he blesses the sacrifice will the invited guests eat. Go up immediately, for you should find him right now."	13 Dès que vous entrerez en ville, vous le trouverez avant qu'il ne monte au haut lieu pour le repas.Le peuple ne mangera pas avant son arrivée, car c'est lui qui doit bénir le sacrifice; après quoi, les invitésmangeront. Maintenant, montez: vous le trouverez sur l'heure."
14 So they went up to the city. As they entered it, Samuel was coming toward them on his way to the high place.	14 Ils montèrent donc à la ville. Comme ils entraient dans la porte, Samuel sortait à leur rencontrepour monter au haut lieu.
15 The day before Saul's arrival, the LORD had given Samuel the revelation:	15 Or, un jour avant que Saül ne vînt, Yahvé avait fait cette révélation à Samuel:
16 "At this time tomorrow I will send you a man from the land of Benjamin whom you are to anoint as commander of my people Israel. He shall save my people from the clutches of the Philistines, for I have witnessed their misery and accepted their cry for help."	16 "Demain à pareille heure, avait-il dit, je t'enverrai un homme du pays de Benjamin, tu luidonneras l'onction comme chef de mon peuple Israël, et il délivrera mon peuple de la main des Philistins, car j'aivu la misère de mon peuple et son cri est venu jusqu'à moi."
17 When Samuel caught sight of Saul, the LORD assured him, "This is the man of whom I told you; he is to govern my people."	17 Et quand Samuel aperçut Saül, Yahvé lui signifia: "Voilà l'homme dont je t'ai dit: C'est lui quijugera mon peuple."
18 Saul met Samuel in the gateway and said, "Please tell me where the seer lives."	18 Saül aborda Samuel au milieu de la porte et dit: "Indique-moi, je te prie, où est la maison duvoyant."
19 Samuel answered Saul: "I am the seer. Go up ahead of me to the high place and eat with me today. In the morning, before dismissing you, I will tell you whatever you wish.	19 Samuel répondit à Saül: "Je suis le voyant. Monte devant moi au haut lieu. Vous mangerezaujourd'hui avec moi. Je te dirai adieu demain matin et je t'expliquerai tout ce qui occupe ton coeur.
20 As for the asses you lost three days ago, do not worry about them, for they have been found. Whom does Israel desire ardently if not you and your father's family?"	20 Quant aux ânesses que tu as perdues il y a trois jours, ne t'en inquiète pas: elles sont retrouvées.D'ailleurs, à qui revient toute la richesse d'Israël? N'est-ce pas à toi et à toute la maison de ton père?"
21 Saul replied: "Am I not a Benjaminite, of one of the smallest tribes of Israel, and is not my clan the least among the clans of the tribe of Benjamin? Why say such things to me?"	21 Saül répondit ainsi: "Ne suis-je pas un Benjaminite, la plus petite des tribus d'Israël, et mafamille n'est-elle pas la moindre de toutes celles de la tribu de Benjamin? Pourquoi me dire de telles paroles?"
22 Samuel then took Saul and his servant and brought them to the room, where he placed them at the head of the guests, of whom there were about thirty.	22 Samuel emmena Saül et son serviteur. Il les introduisit dans la salle et leur donna une place entête des invités, qui étaient une trentaine.
23 He said to the cook, "Bring the portion I gave you and told you to put aside."	23 Puis Samuel dit au cuisinier: "Sers la part que je t'ai donnée en te disant de la mettre de côté."
24 So the cook took up the leg and what went with it, and placed it before Saul. Samuel said: "This is a reserved portion that has been set before you. Eat, for it was kept for you until your arrival; I explained that I was inviting some guests." Thus Saul dined with Samuel that day.	24 Le cuisinier préleva le gigot et la queue, qu'il mit devant Saül, et il dit: "Voilà posé devant toi cequ'on a laissé. Mange!..." Ce jour-là, Saül mangea avec Samuel.
25 When they came down from the high place into the city, a mattress was spread for Saul on the roof,	25 Ils descendirent du haut lieu à la ville. On prépara un lit sur la terrasse pour Saül
26 and he slept there. At daybreak Samuel called to Saul on the roof, "Get up, and I will start you on your journey." Saul rose, and he and Samuel went outside the city together.	26 et il se coucha. Dès que parut l'aurore, Samuel appela Saül sur la terrasse: "Lève-toi, dit-il, je vaiste dire adieu." Saül se leva, et Samuel et lui sortirent tous deux au-dehors.
27 As they were approaching the edge of the town, Samuel said to Saul, "Tell the servant to go on ahead of us, but stay here yourself for the moment, that I may give you a message from God."	27 Ils étaient descendus à la limite de la ville quand Samuel dit à Saül: "Ordonne au serviteur qu'ilpasse devant nous, mais toi, reste maintenant, que je te fasse entendre la parole de Dieu."
