1 Samuel 3

NEW AMERICAN BIBLE	JERUSALEM
1 During the time young Samuel was minister to the LORD under Eli, a revelation of the LORD was uncommon and vision infrequent.	1 Le jeune Samuel servait donc Yahvé en présence d'Eli; en ce temps-là, il était rare que Yahvéparlât, les visions n'étaient pas fréquentes.
2 One day Eli was asleep in his usual place. His eyes had lately grown so weak that he could not see.	2 Or, un jour, Eli était couché dans sa chambre -- ses yeux commençaient de faiblir et il ne pouvaitplus voir --
3 The lamp of God was not yet extinguished, and Samuel was sleeping in the temple of the LORD where the ark of God was.	3 la lampe de Dieu n'était pas encore éteinte et Samuel était couché dans le sanctuaire de Yahvé, làoù se trouvait l'arche de Dieu.
4 The LORD called to Samuel, who answered, "Here I am."	4 Yahvé appela: "Samuel, Samuel!" Il répondit: "Me voici!"
5 He ran to Eli and said, "Here I am. You called me." "I did not call you," Eli said. "Go back to sleep." So he went back to sleep.	5 et il courut près d'Eli et dit: "Me voici, puisque tu m'as appelé" -- "Je ne t'ai pas appelé, dit Eli;retourne te coucher." Il alla se coucher.
6 Again the LORD called Samuel, who rose and went to Eli. "Here I am," he said. "You called me." But he answered, "I did not call you, my son. Go back to sleep."	6 Yahvé recommença d'appeler: "Samuel, Samuel!" Il se leva et alla près d'Eli et dit: "Me voici,puisque tu m'as appelé" -- "Je ne t'ai pas appelé, mon fils, dit Eli; retourne te coucher."
7 At that time Samuel was not familiar with the LORD, because the LORD had not revealed anything to him as yet.	7 Samuel ne connaissait pas encore Yahvé et la parole de Yahvé ne lui avait pas encore été révélée.
8 The LORD called Samuel again, for the third time. Getting up and going to Eli, he said, "Here I am. You called me." Then Eli understood that the LORD was calling the youth.	8 Yahvé recommença d'appeler Samuel pour la troisième fois. Il se leva et alla près d'Eli et dit: "Mevoici, puisque tu m'as appelé." Alors Eli comprit que c'était Yahvé qui appelait l'enfant
9 So he said to Samuel, "Go to sleep, and if you are called, reply, 'Speak, LORD, for your servant is listening.'" When Samuel went to sleep in his place,	9 et il dit à Samuel: "Va te coucher et, si on t'appelle, tu diras: Parle, Yahvé, car ton serviteurécoute", et Samuel alla se coucher à sa place.
10 the LORD came and revealed his presence, calling out as before, "Samuel, Samuel!" Samuel answered, "Speak, for your servant is listening."	10 Yahvé vint et se tint présent. Il appela comme les autres fois: "Samuel, Samuel", et Samuelrépondit: "Parle, car ton serviteur écoute."
11 The LORD said to Samuel: "I am about to do something in Israel that will cause the ears of everyone who hears it to ring.	11 Yahvé dit à Samuel: "Je m'en vais faire en Israël une chose telle que les deux oreilles en tinterontà quiconque l'apprendra.
12 On that day I will carry out in full against Eli everything I threatened against his family.	12 En ce jour-là, j'accomplirai contre Eli tout ce que j'ai dit sur sa maison, du commencement à lafin.
13 I announce to him that I am condemning his family once and for all, because of this crime: though he knew his sons were blaspheming God, he did not reprove them.	13 Tu lui annonceras que je condamne sa maison pour toujours; parce qu'il a su que ses filsmaudissaient Dieu et qu'il ne les a pas corrigés.
14 Therefore, I swear to the family of Eli that no sacrifice or offering will ever expiate its crime."	14 C'est pourquoi -- je le jure à la maison d'Eli -- ni sacrifice ni offrande n'effaceront jamais la fautede la maison d'Eli."
15 Samuel then slept until morning, when he got up early and opened the doors of the temple of the LORD. He feared to tell Eli the vision,	15 Samuel reposa jusqu'au matin, puis il ouvrit les portes du temple de Yahvé. Samuel craignait deraconter la vision à Eli,
16 but Eli called to him, "Samuel, my son!" He replied, "Here I am."	16 mais Eli l'appela en disant: "Samuel, mon fils", et il répondit: "Me voici!"
17 Then Eli asked, "What did he say to you? Hide nothing from me! May God do thus and so to you if you hide a single thing he told you."	17 Il demanda: "Quelle est la parole qu'il t'a dite? Ne me cache rien! Que Dieu te fasse ce mal etqu'il ajoute encore cet autre si tu me caches un mot de ce qu'il t'a dit."
18 So Samuel told him everything, and held nothing back. Eli answered, "He is the LORD. He will do what he judges best."	18 Alors Samuel lui rapporta tout, il ne lui cacha rien. Eli dit: "Il est Yahvé; qu'il fasse ce qui luisemble bon!"
19 Samuel grew up, and the LORD was with him, not permitting any word of his to be without effect.	19 Samuel grandit. Yahvé était avec lui et ne laissa rien tomber à terre de tout ce qu'il lui avait dit.
20 Thus all Israel from Dan to Beer-sheba came to know that Samuel was an accredited prophet of the LORD.	20 Tout Israël sut, depuis Dan jusqu'à Bersabée, que Samuel était accrédité comme prophète deYahvé.
21 The LORD continued to appear at Shiloh; he manifested himself to Samuel at Shiloh through his word,	21 Yahvé continua de se manifester à Silo, car il se révélait à Samuel, à Silo, 4, 1 et la parole deSamuel fut pour tout Israël comme la parole de Yahvé. Eli était très âgé et ses fils persévéraient dans leurmauvaise conduite à l'égard de Yahvé. Il advint en ce temps-là que les Philistins se rassemblèrent pour combattreIsraël, et les Israélites sortirent à leur rencontre pour le combat. Ils campèrent près d'Eben-ha-Ezèr, tandis que lesPhilistins étaient campés à Apheq.
