NEW AMERICAN BIBLEVULGATA
A man named Ananias, however, with his wife Sapphira, sold a piece of property.1 Vir autem quidam nomine Ananias, cum Saphira uxore suo vendidit agrum,
He retained for himself, with his wife's knowledge, some of the purchase price, took the remainder, and put it at the feet of the apostles.2 et fraudavit de pretio agri, conscia uxore sua : et afferens partem quamdam, ad pedes Apostolorum posuit.
But Peter said, "Ananias, why has Satan filled your heart so that you lied to the holy Spirit and retained part of the price of the land?3 Dixit autem Petrus : Anania, cur tentavit Satanas cor tuum, mentiri te Spiritui Sancto, et fraudare de pretio agri ?
While it remained unsold, did it not remain yours? And when it was sold, was it not still under your control? Why did you contrive this deed? You have lied not to human beings, but to God."4 nonne manens tibi manebat, et venundatum in tua erat potestate ? quare posuisti in corde tuo hanc rem ? non es mentitus hominibus, sed Deo.
When Ananias heard these words, he fell down and breathed his last, and great fear came upon all who heard of it.5 Audiens autem Ananias hæc verba, cecidit, et expiravit. Et factus est timor magnus super omnes qui audierunt.
The young men came and wrapped him up, then carried him out and buried him.6 Surgentes autem juvenes amoverunt eum, et efferentes sepelierunt.
After an interval of about three hours, his wife came in, unaware of what had happened.7 Factum est autem quasi horarum trium spatium, et uxor ipsius, nesciens quod factum fuerat, introivit.
Peter said to her, "Tell me, did you sell the land for this amount?" She answered, "Yes, for that amount."8 Dixit autem ei Petrus : Dic mihi mulier, si tanti agrum vendidistis ? At illa dixit : Etiam tanti.
Then Peter said to her, "Why did you agree to test the Spirit of the Lord? Listen, the footsteps of those who have buried your husband are at the door, and they will carry you out."9 Petrus autem ad eam : Quid utique convenit vobis tentare Spiritum Domini ? Ecce pedes eorum qui sepelierunt virum tuum ad ostium, et efferent te.
At once, she fell down at his feet and breathed her last. When the young men entered they found her dead, so they carried her out and buried her beside her husband.10 Confestim cecidit ante pedes ejus, et expiravit. Intrantes autem juvenes invenerunt illam mortuam : et extulerunt, et sepelierunt ad virum suum.
And great fear came upon the whole church and upon all who heard of these things.11 Et factus est timor magnus in universa ecclesia, et in omnes qui audierunt hæc.
Many signs and wonders were done among the people at the hands of the apostles. They were all together in Solomon's portico.12 Per manus autem Apostolorum fiebant signa et prodigia multa in plebe. Et erant unanimiter omnes in porticu Salomonis.
None of the others dared to join them, but the people esteemed them.13 Ceterorum autem nemo audebat se conjungere illis : sed magnificabat eos populus.
Yet more than ever, believers in the Lord, great numbers of men and women, were added to them.14 Magis autem augebatur credentium in Domino multitudo virorum ac mulierum,
Thus they even carried the sick out into the streets and laid them on cots and mats so that when Peter came by, at least his shadow might fall on one or another of them.15 ita ut in plateas ejicerent infirmos, et ponerent in lectulis et grabatis, ut, veniente Petro, saltem umbra illius obumbraret quemquam illorum, et liberarentur ab infirmitatibus suis.
A large number of people from the towns in the vicinity of Jerusalem also gathered, bringing the sick and those disturbed by unclean spirits, and they were all cured.16 Concurrebat autem et multitudo vicinarum civitatum Jerusalem, afferentes ægros, et vexatos a spiritibus immundis : qui curabantur omnes.
Then the high priest rose up and all his companions, that is, the party of the Sadducees, and, filled with jealousy,17 Exsurgens autem princeps sacerdotum, et omnes qui cum illo erant (quæ est hæresis sadducæorum), repleti sunt zelo :
laid hands upon the apostles and put them in the public jail.18 et injecerunt manus in Apostolos, et posuerunt eos in custodia publica.
But during the night, the angel of the Lord opened the doors of the prison, led them out, and said,19 Angelus autem Domini per noctem aperiens januas carceris, et educens eos, dixit :
"Go and take your place in the temple area, and tell the people everything about this life."20 Ite, et stantes loquimini in templo plebi omnia verba vitæ hujus.
When they heard this, they went to the temple early in the morning and taught. When the high priest and his companions arrived, they convened the Sanhedrin, the full senate of the Israelites, and sent to the jail to have them brought in.21 Qui cum audissent, intraverunt diluculo in templum, et docebant. Adveniens autem princeps sacerdotum, et qui cum eo erant, convocaverunt concilium, et omnes seniores filiorum Israël : et miserunt ad carcerem ut adducerentur.
But the court officers who went did not find them in the prison, so they came back and reported,22 Cum autem venissent ministri, et aperto carcere non invenissent illos, reversi nuntiaverunt,
"We found the jail securely locked and the guards stationed outside the doors, but when we opened them, we found no one inside."23 dicentes : Carcerem quidem invenimus clausum cum omni diligentia, et custodes stantes ante januas : aperientes autem neminem intus invenimus.
When they heard this report, the captain of the temple guard and the chief priests were at a loss about them, as to what this would come to.24 Ut autem audierunt hos sermones magistratus templi et principes sacerdotum, ambigebant de illis quidnam fieret.
Then someone came in and reported to them, "The men whom you put in prison are in the temple area and are teaching the people."25 Adveniens autem quidam, nuntiavit eis : Quia ecce viri quos posuistis in carcerem, sunt in templo, stantes et docentes populum.
Then the captain and the court officers went and brought them in, but without force, because they were afraid of being stoned by the people.26 Tunc abiit magistratus cum ministris, et adduxit illos sine vi : timebant enim populum ne lapidarentur.
When they had brought them in and made them stand before the Sanhedrin, the high priest questioned them,27 Et cum adduxissent illos, statuerunt in concilio : et interrogavit eos princeps sacerdotum,
"We gave you strict orders (did we not?) to stop teaching in that name. Yet you have filled Jerusalem with your teaching and want to bring this man's blood upon us."28 dicens : Præcipiendo præcepimus vobis ne doceretis in nomine isto, et ecce replestis Jerusalem doctrina vestra : et vultis inducere super nos sanguinem hominis istius.
But Peter and the apostles said in reply, "We must obey God rather than men.29 Respondens autem Petrus et Apostoli, dixerunt : Obedire oportet Deo magis quam hominibus.
The God of our ancestors raised Jesus, though you had him killed by hanging him on a tree.30 Deus patrum nostrorum suscitavit Jesum, quem vos interemistis, suspendentes in ligno.
God exalted him at his right hand as leader and savior to grant Israel repentance and forgiveness of sins.31 Hunc principem et salvatorem Deus exaltavit dextera sua ad dandam pœnitentiam Israëli, et remissionem peccatorum :
We are witnesses of these things, as is the holy Spirit that God has given to those who obey him."32 et nos sumus testes horum verborum, et Spiritus Sanctus, quem dedit Deus omnibus obedientibus sibi.
When they heard this, they became infuriated and wanted to put them to death.33 Hæc cum audissent, dissecabantur, et cogitabant interficere illos.
But a Pharisee in the Sanhedrin named Gamaliel, a teacher of the law, respected by all the people, stood up, ordered the men to be put outside for a short time,34 Surgens autem quidam in concilio pharisæus, nomine Gamaliel, legis doctor, honorabilis universæ plebi, jussit foras ad breve homines fieri,
and said to them, "Fellow Israelites, be careful what you are about to do to these men.35 dixitque ad illos : Viri Israëlitæ, attendite vobis super hominibus istis quid acturi sitis.
Some time ago, Theudas appeared, claiming to be someone important, and about four hundred men joined him, but he was killed, and all those who were loyal to him were disbanded and came to nothing.36 Ante hos enim dies extitit Theodas, dicens se esse aliquem, cui consensit numerus virorum circiter quadringentorum : qui occisus est, et omnes qui credebant ei, dissipati sunt, et redacti ad nihilum.
After him came Judas the Galilean at the time of the census. He also drew people after him, but he too perished and all who were loyal to him were scattered.37 Post hunc extitit Judas Galilæus in diebus professionis, et avertit populum post se : et ipse periit, et omnes quotquot consenserunt ei, dispersi sunt.
So now I tell you, have nothing to do with these men, and let them go. For if this endeavor or this activity is of human origin, it will destroy itself.38 Et nunc itaque dico vobis, discedite ab hominibus istis, et sinite illos : quoniam si est ex hominibus consilium hoc aut opus, dissolvetur :
But if it comes from God, you will not be able to destroy them; you may even find yourselves fighting against God." They were persuaded by him.39 si vero ex Deo est, non poteritis dissolvere illud, ne forte et Deo repugnare inveniamini. Consenserunt autem illi.
After recalling the apostles, they had them flogged, ordered them to stop speaking in the name of Jesus, and dismissed them.40 Et convocantes Apostolos, cæsis denuntiaverunt ne omnino loquerentur in nomine Jesu, et dimiserunt eos.
So they left the presence of the Sanhedrin, rejoicing that they had been found worthy to suffer dishonor for the sake of the name.41 Et illi quidem ibant gaudentes a conspectu concilii, quoniam digni habiti sunt pro nomine Jesu contumeliam pati.
And all day long, both at the temple and in their homes, they did not stop teaching and proclaiming the Messiah, Jesus.42 Omni autem die non cessabant in templo et circa domos, docentes et evangelizantes Christum Jesum.
