NEW AMERICAN BIBLENOVA VULGATA
Then Pilate took Jesus and had him scourged.1 Tunc ergo apprehendit Pi latus Iesum et flagellavit.
And the soldiers wove a crown out of thorns and placed it on his head, and clothed him in a purple cloak,2 Et milites,plectentes coronam de spinis, imposuerunt capiti eius et veste purpureacircumdederunt eum;
and they came to him and said, "Hail, King of the Jews!" And they struck him repeatedly.3 et veniebant ad eum et dicebant: “ Ave, rex Iudaeorum!”, et dabant ei alapas.
Once more Pilate went out and said to them, "Look, I am bringing him out to you, so that you may know that I find no guilt in him."4 Et exiit iterum Pilatus foras et dicit eis: “ Ecceadduco vobis eum foras, ut cognoscatis quia in eo invenio causam nullam ”.
So Jesus came out, wearing the crown of thorns and the purple cloak. And he said to them, "Behold, the man!"5 Exiit ergo Iesus foras, portans spineam coronam et purpureum vestimentum. Etdicit eis: “ Ecce homo! ”.
When the chief priests and the guards saw him they cried out, "Crucify him, crucify him!" Pilate said to them, "Take him yourselves and crucify him. I find no guilt in him."6 Cum ergo vidissent eum pontifices et ministri, clamaverunt dicentes: “ Crucifige, crucifige! ”. Dicit eis Pilatus: “Accipite eum vos et crucifigite; ego enim non invenio in eo causam ”.
The Jews answered, "We have a law, and according to that law he ought to die, because he made himself the Son of God."7 Responderunt ei Iudaei: “ Nos legem habemus, et secundum legem debet mori, quia Filium Dei se fecit ”.
Now when Pilate heard this statement, he became even more afraid,8 Cum ergo audisset Pilatus hunc sermonem, magis timuit
and went back into the praetorium and said to Jesus, "Where are you from?" Jesus did not answer him.9 et ingressus estpraetorium iterum et dicit ad Iesum: “ Unde es tu? ”. Iesus autem responsumnon dedit ei.
So Pilate said to him, "Do you not speak to me? Do you not know that I have power to release you and I have power to crucify you?"10 Dicit ergo ei Pilatus: “ Mihi non loqueris? Nescis quiapotestatem habeo dimittere te et potestatem habeo crucifigere te? ”.
Jesus answered (him), "You would have no power over me if it had not been given to you from above. For this reason the one who handed me over to you has the greater sin."11 Respondit Iesus: “ Non haberes potestatem adversum me ullam, nisi tibi essetdatum desuper; propterea, qui tradidit me tibi, maius peccatum habet ”.
Consequently, Pilate tried to release him; but the Jews cried out, "If you release him, you are not a Friend of Caesar. Everyone who makes himself a king opposes Caesar."12 Exinde quaerebat Pilatus dimittere eum; Iudaei autem clamabant dicentes: “Si hunc dimittis, non es amicus Caesaris! Omnis, qui se regem facit, contradicitCaesari ”.
When Pilate heard these words he brought Jesus out and seated him on the judge's bench in the place called Stone Pavement, in Hebrew, Gabbatha.13 Pilatus ergo, cum audisset hos sermones, adduxit foras Iesum etsedit pro tribunali in locum, qui dicitur Lithostrotos, Hebraice autem Gabbatha.
It was preparation day for Passover, and it was about noon. And he said to the Jews, "Behold, your king!"14 Erat autem Parasceve Paschae, hora erat quasi sexta. Et dicit Iudaeis: “Ecce rex vester! ”.
They cried out, "Take him away, take him away! Crucify him!" Pilate said to them, "Shall I crucify your king?" The chief priests answered, "We have no king but Caesar."15 Clamaverunt ergo illi: “ Tolle, tolle, crucifige eum!”. Dicit eis Pilatus: “ Regem vestrum crucifigam? ”. Responderuntpontifices: “ Non habemus regem, nisi Caesarem ”.
Then he handed him over to them to be crucified. So they took Jesus,16 Tunc ergo tradidit eisillum, ut crucifigeretur. Susceperunt ergo Iesum.
and carrying the cross himself he went out to what is called the Place of the Skull, in Hebrew, Golgotha.17 Et baiulans sibi crucem exivit in eum, qui dicitur Calvariae locum, quodHebraice dicitur Golgotha,
There they crucified him, and with him two others, one on either side, with Jesus in the middle.18 ubi eum crucifixerunt et cum eo alios duos hinc ethinc, medium autem Iesum.
Pilate also had an inscription written and put on the cross. It read, "Jesus the Nazorean, the King of the Jews."19 Scripsit autem et titulum Pilatus et posuit supercrucem; erat autem scriptum: “ Iesus Nazarenus Rex Iudaeorum ”.
Now many of the Jews read this inscription, because the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city; and it was written in Hebrew, Latin, and Greek.20 Hunc ergotitulum multi legerunt Iudaeorum, quia prope civitatem erat locus, ubicrucifixus est Iesus; et erat scriptum Hebraice, Latine, Graece.
So the chief priests of the Jews said to Pilate, "Do not write 'The King of the Jews,' but that he said, 'I am the King of the Jews.'"21 Dicebantergo Pilato pontifices Iudaeorum: “ Noli scribere: Rex Iudaeorum, sed: Ipsedixit: “Rex sum Iudaeorum” ”.
Pilate answered, "What I have written, I have written."22 Respondit Pilatus: “ Quod scripsi, scripsi! ”.
When the soldiers had crucified Jesus, they took his clothes and divided them into four shares, a share for each soldier. They also took his tunic, but the tunic was seamless, woven in one piece from the top down.23 Milites ergo cum crucifixissent Iesum, acceperunt vestimenta eius et feceruntquattuor partes, unicuique militi partem, et tunicam. Erat autem tunicainconsutilis, desuper contexta per totum.
So they said to one another, "Let's not tear it, but cast lots for it to see whose it will be," in order that the passage of scripture might be fulfilled (that says): "They divided my garments among them, and for my vesture they cast lots." This is what the soldiers did.24 Dixerunt ergo ad invicem: “ Nonscindamus eam, sed sortiamur de illa, cuius sit ”, ut Scriptura impleaturdicens:
“ Partiti sunt vestimenta mea sibi
et in vestem meam miserunt sortem ”.
Et milites quidem haec fecerunt.
Standing by the cross of Jesus were his mother and his mother's sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary of Magdala.25 Stabant autem iuxta crucem Iesu mater eius et soror matris eius, MariaCleopae, et Maria Magdalene.
When Jesus saw his mother and the disciple there whom he loved, he said to his mother, "Woman, behold, your son."26 Cum vidisset ergo Iesus matrem et discipulumstantem, quem diligebat, dicit matri: “ Mulier, ecce filius tuus ”.
Then he said to the disciple, "Behold, your mother." And from that hour the disciple took her into his home.27 Deinde dicit discipulo: “ Ecce mater tua ”. Et ex illa hora accepit eamdiscipulus in sua.
After this, aware that everything was now finished, in order that the scripture might be fulfilled, Jesus said, "I thirst."28 Post hoc sciens Iesus quia iam omnia consummata sunt, ut consummareturScriptura, dicit: “ Sitio ”.
There was a vessel filled with common wine. So they put a sponge soaked in wine on a sprig of hyssop and put it up to his mouth.29 Vas positum erat aceto plenum; spongiam ergoplenam aceto hyssopo circumponentes, obtulerunt ori eius.
When Jesus had taken the wine, he said, "It is finished." And bowing his head, he handed over the spirit.30 Cum ergo accepissetacetum, Iesus dixit: “ Consummatum est! ”. Et inclinato capite tradiditspiritum.
Now since it was preparation day, in order that the bodies might not remain on the cross on the sabbath, for the sabbath day of that week was a solemn one, the Jews asked Pilate that their legs be broken and they be taken down.31 Iudaei ergo, quoniam Parasceve erat, ut non remanerent in cruce corporasabbato, erat enim magnus dies illius sabbati, rogaverunt Pilatum, utfrangerentur eorum crura, et tollerentur.
So the soldiers came and broke the legs of the first and then of the other one who was crucified with Jesus.32 Venerunt ergo milites et primiquidem fregerunt crura et alterius, qui crucifixus est cum eo;
But when they came to Jesus and saw that he was already dead, they did not break his legs,33 ad Iesum autemcum venissent, ut viderunt eum iam mortuum, non fregerunt eius crura,
but one soldier thrust his lance into his side, and immediately blood and water flowed out.34 sedunus militum lancea latus eius aperuit, et continuo exivit sanguis et aqua.
An eyewitness has testified, and his testimony is true; he knows that he is speaking the truth, so that you also may (come to) believe.35 Et qui vidit, testimonium perhibuit, et verum est eius testimonium, et ille scitquia vera dicit, ut et vos credatis.
For this happened so that the scripture passage might be fulfilled: "Not a bone of it will be broken."36 Facta sunt enim haec, ut Scripturaimpleatur: “ Os non comminuetur eius ”,
And again another passage says: "They will look upon him whom they have pierced."37 et iterum alia Scriptura dicit:“ Videbunt in quem transfixerunt ”.
After this, Joseph of Arimathea, secretly a disciple of Jesus for fear of the Jews, asked Pilate if he could remove the body of Jesus. And Pilate permitted it. So he came and took his body.38 Post haec autem rogavit Pilatum Ioseph ab Arimathaea, qui erat discipulusIesu, occultus autem propter metum Iudaeorum, ut tolleret corpus Iesu; etpermisit Pilatus. Venit ergo et tulit corpus eius.
Nicodemus, the one who had first come to him at night, also came bringing a mixture of myrrh and aloes weighing about one hundred pounds.39 Venit autem et Nicodemus, qui venerat ad eum nocte primum, ferens mixturam myrrhae et aloes quasi librascentum.
They took the body of Jesus and bound it with burial cloths along with the spices, according to the Jewish burial custom.40 Acceperunt ergo corpus Iesu et ligaverunt illud linteis cumaromatibus, sicut mos Iudaeis est sepelire.
Now in the place where he had been crucified there was a garden, and in the garden a new tomb, in which no one had yet been buried.41 Erat autem in loco, ubicrucifixus est, hortus, et in horto monumentum novum, in quo nondum quisquampositus erat.
So they laid Jesus there because of the Jewish preparation day; for the tomb was close by.42 Ibi ergo propter Parascevem Iudaeorum, quia iuxta eratmonumentum, posuerunt Iesum.
