Deuteronomy 6

NEW AMERICAN BIBLE	JERUSALEM
1 "These then are the commandments, the statutes and decrees which the LORD, your God, has ordered that you be taught to observe in the land into which you are crossing for conquest,	1 Tels sont les commandements, les lois et les coutumes que Yahvé votre Dieu a ordonné devous enseigner, afin que vous les mettiez en pratique dans le pays dont vous allez prendre possession.
2 so that you and your son and your grandson may fear the LORD, your God, and keep, throughout the days of your lives, all his statutes and commandments which I enjoin on you, and thus have long life.	2 Ainsi, si tu crains Yahvé ton Dieu tous les jours de ta vie, si tu observes toutes ses lois et sescommandements que je t'ordonne aujourd'hui, tu auras longue vie, toi, ton fils et le fils de ton fils.
3 Hear then, Israel, and be careful to observe them, that you may grow and prosper the more, in keeping with the promise of the LORD, the God of your fathers, to give you a land flowing with milk and honey.	3 Puisses-tu écouter, Israël, garder et pratiquer ce qui te rendra heureux et te multipliera, ainsique te l'a dit Yahvé, le Dieu de tes pères, en te donnant une terre qui ruisselle de lait et de miel!
4 "Hear, O Israel! The LORD is our God, the LORD alone!	4 Ecoute, Israël: Yahvé notre Dieu est le seul Yahvé.
5 Therefore, you shall love the LORD, your God, with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your strength.	5 Tu aimeras Yahvé ton Dieu de tout ton coeur, de toute ton âme et de tout ton pouvoir.
6 Take to heart these words which I enjoin on you today.	6 Que ces paroles que je te dicte aujourd'hui restent dans ton coeur!
7 Drill them into your children. Speak of them at home and abroad, whether you are busy or at rest.	7 Tu les répéteras à tes fils, tu les leur diras aussi bien assis dans ta maison que marchant sur laroute, couché aussi bien que debout;
8 Bind them at your wrist as a sign and let them be as a pendant on your forehead.	8 tu les attacheras à ta main comme un signe, sur ton front comme un bandeau;
9 Write them on the doorposts of your houses and on your gates.	9 tu les écriras sur les poteaux de ta maison et sur tes portes.
10 "When the LORD, your God, brings you into the land which he swore to your fathers, Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, that he would give you, a land with fine, large cities that you did not build,	10 Lorsque Yahvé ton Dieu t'aura conduit au pays qu'il a juré à tes pères, Abraham, Isaac etJacob, de te donner, aux villes grandes et prospères que tu n'as pas bâties,
11 with houses full of goods of all sorts that you did not garner, with cisterns that you did not dig, with vineyards and olive groves that you did not plant; and when, therefore, you eat your fill,	11 aux maisons pleines de toutes sortes de biens, maisons que tu n'as pas remplies, aux puitsque tu n'as pas creusés, aux vignes et aux oliviers que tu n'as pas plantés, lors donc que tu auras mangé et que tute seras rassasié,
12 take care not to forget the LORD, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, that place of slavery.	12 garde-toi d'oublier Yahvé qui t'a fait sortir du pays d'Egypte, de la maison de servitude.
13 The LORD, your God, shall you fear; him shall you serve, and by his name shall you swear.	13 C'est Yahvé ton Dieu que tu craindras, lui que tu serviras, c'est par son nom que tu jureras.
14 You shall not follow other gods, such as those of the surrounding nations,	14 Ne suivez pas d'autres dieux, d'entre les dieux des nations qui vous entourent,
15 lest the wrath of the LORD, your God, flare up against you and he destroy you from the face of the land; for the LORD, your God, who is in your midst, is a jealous God.	15 car c'est un Dieu jaloux que Yahvé ton Dieu qui est au milieu de toi. La colère de Yahvé tonDieu s'enflammerait contre toi et il te ferait disparaître de la face de la terre.
16 "You shall not put the LORD, your God, to the test, as you did at Massah.	16 Vous ne mettrez pas Yahvé votre Dieu à l'épreuve, comme vous l'avez mis à l'épreuve àMassa.
17 But keep the commandments of the LORD, your God, and the ordinances and statutes he has enjoined on you.	17 Vous garderez les commandements de Yahvé votre Dieu, ses instructions et ses lois qu'il t'aprescrites,
18 Do what is right and good in the sight of the LORD, that you may, according to his word, prosper, and may enter in and possess the good land which the LORD promised on oath to your fathers,	18 et tu feras ce qui est juste et bon aux yeux de Yahvé afin d'être heureux, et de prendrepossession de l'heureux pays dont Yahvé a juré à tes pères
19 thrusting all your enemies out of your way.	19 qu'il en chasserait tous tes ennemis devant toi; ainsi l'a dit Yahvé.
20 "Later on, when your son asks you what these ordinances, statutes and decrees mean which the LORD, our God, has enjoined on you,	20 Lorsque demain ton fils te demandera: "Qu'est-ce donc que ces instructions, ces lois et cescoutumes que Yahvé notre Dieu vous a prescrites?"
21 you shall say to your son, 'We were once slaves of Pharaoh in Egypt, but the LORD brought us out of Egypt with his strong hand	21 Tu diras à ton fils: "Nous étions esclaves de Pharaon, en Egypte, et Yahvé nous a fait sortird'Egypte par sa main puissante.
22 and wrought before our eyes signs and wonders, great and dire, against Egypt and against Pharaoh and his whole house.	22 Yahvé a accompli sous nos yeux des signes et des prodiges grands et terribles contrel'Egypte, Pharaon et toute sa maison.
23 He brought us from there to lead us into the land he promised on oath to our fathers, and to give it to us.	23 Mais nous, il nous a fait sortir de là pour nous conduire dans le pays qu'il avait promis parserment à nos pères, et pour nous le donner.
24 Therefore, the LORD commanded us to observe all these statutes in fear of the LORD, our God, that we may always have as prosperous and happy a life as we have today;	24 Et Yahvé nous a ordonné de mettre en pratique toutes ces lois, afin de craindre Yahvé notreDieu, d'être toujours heureux et de vivre, comme il nous l'a accordé jusqu'à présent.
25 and our justice before the LORD, our God, is to consist in carefully observing all these commandments he has enjoined on us.'	25 Telle sera notre justice: garder et mettre en pratique tous ces commandements devant Yahvénotre Dieu, comme il nous l'a ordonné."
