1 These are the words which Moses spoke to all Israel beyond the Jordan ( in the desert, in the Arabah, opposite Suph, between Paran and Tophel, Laban, Hazeroth and Dizahab;	1 אלה הדברים אשר דבר משה אל כל ישראל בעבר הירדן במדבר בערבה מול סוף בין פארן ובין תפל ולבן וחצרת ודי זהב
2 it is a journey of eleven days from Horeb to Kadesh-barnea by way of the highlands of Seir).	2 אחד עשר יום מחרב דרך הר שעיר עד קדש ברנע
3 In the fortieth year, on the first day of the eleventh month, Moses spoke to the Israelites all the commands that the LORD had given him in their regard.	3 ויהי בארבעים שנה בעשתי עשר חדש באחד לחדש דבר משה אל בני ישראל ככל אשר צוה יהוה אתו אלהם
4 After he had defeated Sihon, king of the Amorites, who lived in Heshbon, and Og, king of Bashan, who lived in Ashtaroth and in Edrei,	4 אחרי הכתו את סיחן מלך האמרי אשר יושב בחשבון ואת עוג מלך הבשן אשר יושב בעשתרת באדרעי
5 Moses began to explain the law in the land of Moab beyond the Jordan, as follows:	5 בעבר הירדן בארץ מואב הואיל משה באר את התורה הזאת לאמר
6 "The LORD, our God, said to us at Horeb, 'You have stayed long enough at this mountain.	6 יהוה אלהינו דבר אלינו בחרב לאמר רב לכם שבת בהר הזה
7 Leave here and go to the hill country of the Amorites and to all the surrounding regions, the land of the Canaanites in the Arabah, the mountains, the foothills, the Negeb and the seacoast; to Lebanon, and as far as the Great River (the Euphrates).	7 פנו וסעו לכם ובאו הר האמרי ואל כל שכניו בערבה בהר ובשפלה ובנגב ובחוף הים ארץ הכנעני והלבנון עד הנהר הגדל נהר פרת
8 I have given that land over to you. Go now and occupy the land I swore to your fathers, Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, I would give to them and to their descendants.'	8 ראה נתתי לפניכם את הארץ באו ורשו את הארץ אשר נשבע יהוה לאבתיכם לאברהם ליצחק וליעקב לתת להם ולזרעם אחריהם
9 "At that time I said to you, 'Alone, I am unable to carry you.	9 ואמר אלכם בעת ההוא לאמר לא אוכל לבדי שאת אתכם
10 The LORD, your God, has so multiplied you that you are now as numerous as the stars in the sky.	10 יהוה אלהיכם הרבה אתכם והנכם היום ככוכבי השמים לרב
11 May the LORD, the God of your fathers, increase you a thousand times over, and bless you as he promised!	11 יהוה אלהי אבותכם יסף עליכם ככם אלף פעמים ויברך אתכם כאשר דבר לכם
12 But how can I alone bear the crushing burden that you are, along with your bickering?	12 איכה אשא לבדי טרחכם ומשאכם וריבכם
13 Choose wise, intelligent and experienced men from each of your tribes, that I may appoint them as your leaders.'	13 הבו לכם אנשים חכמים ונבנים וידעים לשבטיכם ואשימם בראשיכם
14 You answered me, 'We agree to do as you have proposed.'	14 ותענו אתי ותאמרו טוב הדבר אשר דברת לעשות
15 So I took outstanding men of your tribes, wise and experienced, and made them your leaders as officials over thousands, over hundreds, over fifties and over tens, and other tribal officers.	15 ואקח את ראשי שבטיכם אנשים חכמים וידעים ואתן אתם ראשים עליכם שרי אלפים ושרי מאות ושרי חמשים ושרי עשרת ושטרים לשבטיכם
16 I charged your judges at that time, 'Listen to complaints among your kinsmen, and administer true justice to both parties even if one of them is an alien.	16 ואצוה את שפטיכם בעת ההוא לאמר שמע בין אחיכם ושפטתם צדק בין איש ובין אחיו ובין גרו
17 In rendering judgment, do not consider who a person is; give ear to the lowly and to the great alike, fearing no man, for judgment is God's. Refer to me any case that is too hard for you and I will hear it.'	17 לא תכירו פנים במשפט כקטן כגדל תשמעון לא תגורו מפני איש כי המשפט לאלהים הוא והדבר אשר יקשה מכם תקרבון אלי ושמעתיו
18 Thereupon I gave you all the commands you were to fulfill.	18 ואצוה אתכם בעת ההוא את כל הדברים אשר תעשון
19 "Then, in obedience to the command of the LORD, our God, we set out from Horeb and journeyed through the whole desert, vast and fearful as you have seen, in the direction of the hill country of the Amorites. We had reached Kadesh-barnea	19 ונסע מחרב ונלך את כל המדבר הגדול והנורא ההוא אשר ראיתם דרך הר האמרי כאשר צוה יהוה אלהינו אתנו ונבא עד קדש ברנע
20 when I said to you, 'You have come to the hill country of the Amorites, which the LORD, our God, is giving us.	20 ואמר אלכם באתם עד הר האמרי אשר יהוה אלהינו נתן לנו
21 The LORD, your God, has given this land over to you. Go up and occupy it, as the LORD, the God of your fathers, commands you. Do not fear or lose heart.'	21 ראה נתן יהוה אלהיך לפניך את הארץ עלה רש כאשר דבר יהוה אלהי אבתיך לך אל תירא ואל תחת
22 Then all of you came up to me and said, 'Let us send men ahead to reconnoiter the land for us and report to us on the road we must follow and the cities we must take.'	22 ותקרבון אלי כלכם ותאמרו נשלחה אנשים לפנינו ויחפרו לנו את הארץ וישבו אתנו דבר את הדרך אשר נעלה בה ואת הערים אשר נבא אליהן
23 Agreeing with the proposal, I chose twelve men from your number, one from each tribe.	23 וייטב בעיני הדבר ואקח מכם שנים עשר אנשים איש אחד לשבט
24 They set out into the hill country as far as the Wadi Eshcol, and explored it.	24 ויפנו ויעלו ההרה ויבאו עד נחל אשכל וירגלו אתה
25 Then, taking along some of the fruit of the land, they brought it down to us and reported, 'The land which the LORD, our God, gives us is good.'	25 ויקחו בידם מפרי הארץ ויורדו אלינו וישבו אתנו דבר ויאמרו טובה הארץ אשר יהוה אלהינו נתן לנו
26 "But you refused to go up, and after defying the command of the LORD, your God,	26 ולא אביתם לעלת ותמרו את פי יהוה אלהיכם
27 you set to murmuring in your tents, 'Out of hatred for us the LORD has brought us up out of the land of Egypt, to deliver us into the hands of the Amorites and destroy us.	27 ותרגנו באהליכם ותאמרו בשנאת יהוה אתנו הוציאנו מארץ מצרים לתת אתנו ביד האמרי להשמידנו
28 What shall we meet with up there? Our kinsmen have made us fainthearted by reporting that the people are stronger and taller than we, and their cities are large and fortified to the sky; besides, they saw the Anakim there.'	28 אנה אנחנו עלים אחינו המסו את לבבנו לאמר עם גדול ורם ממנו ערים גדלת ובצורת בשמים וגם בני ענקים ראינו שם
29 "But I said to you, 'Have no dread or fear of them.	29 ואמר אלכם לא תערצון ולא תיראון מהם
30 The LORD, your God, who goes before you, will himself fight for you, just as he took your part before your very eyes in Egypt,	30 יהוה אלהיכם ההלך לפניכם הוא ילחם לכם ככל אשר עשה אתכם במצרים לעיניכם
31 as well as in the desert, where you saw how the LORD, your God, carried you, as a man carries his child, all along your journey until you arrived at this place.'	31 ובמדבר אשר ראית אשר נשאך יהוה אלהיך כאשר ישא איש את בנו בכל הדרך אשר הלכתם עד באכם עד המקום הזה
32 Despite this, you would not trust the LORD, your God,	32 ובדבר הזה אינכם מאמינם ביהוה אלהיכם
33 who journeys before you to find you a resting place--by day in the cloud, and by night in the fire, to show the way you must go.	33 ההלך לפניכם בדרך לתור לכם מקום לחנתכם באש לילה לראתכם בדרך אשר תלכו בה ובענן יומם
34 When the LORD heard your words, he was angry;	34 וישמע יהוה את קול דבריכם ויקצף וישבע לאמר
35 and he swore, 'Not one man of this evil generation shall look upon the good land I swore to give to your fathers,	35 אם יראה איש באנשים האלה הדור הרע הזה את הארץ הטובה אשר נשבעתי לתת לאבתיכם
36 except Caleb, son of Jephunneh; he shall see it. For to him and to his sons I will give the land he trod upon, because he has followed the LORD unreservedly.'	36 זולתי כלב בן יפנה הוא יראנה ולו אתן את הארץ אשר דרך בה ולבניו יען אשר מלא אחרי יהוה
37 "The LORD was angered against me also on your account, and said, 'Not even you shall enter there,	37 גם בי התאנף יהוה בגללכם לאמר גם אתה לא תבא שם
38 but your aide Joshua, son of Nun, shall enter. Encourage him, for he is to give Israel its heritage.	38 יהושע בן נון העמד לפניך הוא יבא שמה אתו חזק כי הוא ינחלנה את ישראל
39 Your little ones, who you said would become booty, and your children, who as yet do not know good from bad--they shall enter; to them I will give it, and they shall occupy it.	39 וטפכם אשר אמרתם לבז יהיה ובניכם אשר לא ידעו היום טוב ורע המה יבאו שמה ולהם אתננה והם יירשוה
40 But as for yourselves: turn about and proceed into the desert on the Red Sea road.'	40 ואתם פנו לכם וסעו המדברה דרך ים סוף
41 "In reply you said to me, 'We have sinned against the LORD. We will go up ourselves and fight, just as the LORD, our God, commanded us.' And each of you girded on his weapons, making light of going up into the hill country.	41 ותענו ותאמרו אלי חטאנו ליהוה אנחנו נעלה ונלחמנו ככל אשר צונו יהוה אלהינו ותחגרו איש את כלי מלחמתו ותהינו לעלת ההרה
42 But the LORD said to me, 'Warn them: Do not go up and fight, lest you be beaten down before your enemies, for I will not be in your midst.'	42 ויאמר יהוה אלי אמר להם לא תעלו ולא תלחמו כי אינני בקרבכם ולא תנגפו לפני איביכם
43 I gave you this warning but you would not listen. In defiance of the LORD'S command you arrogantly marched off into the hill country.	43 ואדבר אליכם ולא שמעתם ותמרו את פי יהוה ותזדו ותעלו ההרה
44 Then the Amorites living there came out against you and, like bees, chased you, cutting you down in Seir as far as Hormah.	44 ויצא האמרי הישב בהר ההוא לקראתכם וירדפו אתכם כאשר תעשינה הדברים ויכתו אתכם בשעיר עד חרמה
45 On your return you wept before the LORD, but he did not listen to your cry or give ear to you.	45 ותשבו ותבכו לפני יהוה ולא שמע יהוה בקלכם ולא האזין אליכם
46 That is why you had to stay as long as you did at Kadesh.	46 ותשבו בקדש ימים רבים כימים אשר ישבתם
