1 The LORD said to Moses,	1 Ekkor szólt ott az Úr Mózeshez:
2 "Send men to reconnoiter the land of Canaan, which I am giving to the Israelites. You shall send one man from each ancestral tribe, all of them princes."	2 »Küldj férfiakat, hogy vegyék szemügyre Kánaán földjét, amelyet majd Izrael fiainak adok, minden törzsből egyet-egyet, a fejedelmek közül.«
3 So Moses dispatched them from the desert of Paran, as the LORD had ordered. All of them were leaders among the Israelites;	3 Megtette Mózes, amit az Úr parancsolt, s elküldte Párán pusztából a fejedelmi férfiakat, név szerint:
4 by name they were: Shammua, son of Zaccur, of the tribe of Reuben;	4 Rúben törzséből: Sámuát, Zekur fiát,
5 Shaphat, son of Hori, of the tribe of Simeon;	5 Simeon törzséből: Safátot, Húri fiát,
6 Caleb, son of Jephunneh, of the tribe of Judah;	6 Júda törzséből: Kálebet, Jefóne fiát,
7 Igal (son of Joseph), of the tribe of Issachar;	7 Isszakár törzséből: Jígalt, József fiát,
8 Hoshea, son of Nun, of the tribe of Ephraim;	8 Efraim törzséből: Hóseát, Nún fiát,
9 Palti, son of Raphu, of the tribe of Benjamin;	9 Benjamin törzséből: Fáltit, Ráfu fiát,
10 Gaddiel, son of Sodi, of the tribe of Zebulun;	10 Zebulon törzséből: Geddiélt, Szódi fiát,
11 Gaddi, son of Susi, of the tribe of Manasseh, for the Josephites, with	11 József törzséből: Manassze ágából: Gáddit, Szúszi fiát,
12 Ammiel, son of Gemalli, of the tribe of Dan;	12 Dán törzséből: Ammielt, Gemálli fiát,
13 Sethur, son of Michael, of the tribe of Asher;	13 Áser törzséből: Sztúrt, Mikaél fiát,
14 Nahbi, son of Vophsi, of the tribe of Naphtali;	14 Naftali törzséből: Nahábit, Vápszi fiát,
15 Geuel, son of Machi, of the tribe of Gad.	15 Gád törzséből: Gúelt, Máki fiát.
16 These are the names of the men whom Moses sent out to reconnoiter the land. But Hoshea, son of Nun, Moses called Joshua.	16 Ez volt azoknak a férfiaknak a neve, akiket Mózes elküldött, hogy vegyék szemügyre a földet. Hóseát, Nún fiát azonban Józsuénak hívta.
17 In sending them to reconnoiter the land of Canaan, Moses said to them, "Go up here in the Negeb, up into the highlands,	17 Elküldte tehát ezeket Mózes, hogy vegyék szemügyre Kánaán földjét és azt mondta nekik: »Menjetek fel a Délvidéken át, s ha feljuttok a hegyekre,
18 and see what kind of land it is. Are the people living there strong or weak, few or many?	18 vegyétek szemügyre azt a földet, hogy milyen, meg a népet, amely lakja, hogy erős-e vagy gyenge, hogy számra nézve kevés-e vagy sok,
19 Is the country in which they live good or bad? Are the towns in which they dwell open or fortified?	19 maga a föld jó-e vagy rossz, milyenek a városok, körülkerítettek-e vagy kerítetlenek,
20 Is the soil fertile or barren, wooded or clear? And do your best to get some of the fruit of the land." It was then the season for early grapes.	20 a talaj kövér-e vagy sovány, erdős-e vagy fátlan. Legyetek bátrak, s hozzatok nekünk a föld gyümölcseiből.« – Éppen az az idő volt, amikor már enni lehetett a korai szőlőt.
21 So they went up and reconnoitered the land from the desert of Zin as far as where Rehob adjoins Labo of Hamath.	21 Felmentek tehát, s kikémlelték a földet a Szín-pusztától kezdve egészen Rohóbig, amely Emát felé menet van.
22 Going up by way of the Negeb, they reached Hebron, where Ahiman, Sheshai and Talmai, descendants of the Anakim, were living. (Hebron had been built seven years before Zoan in Egypt.)	22 Felmentek a Délvidékre, s eljutottak Hebronba, ahol Achimán, Sisáj és Talmáj, Enák fiai voltak. – Hebron hét esztendővel előbb épült, mint Tánisz, Egyiptom városa. –
23 They also reached the Wadi Eshcol, where they cut down a branch with a single cluster of grapes on it, which two of them carried on a pole, as well as some pomegranates and figs.	23 Aztán elmentek a Szőlőfürt völgyéig, s levágtak egy szőlővesszőt a fürtjével együtt, s két férfi egy rúdon elhozta, és vettek a hely gránátalmáiból és fügéiből is,
24 It was because of the cluster the Israelites cut there that they called the place Wadi Eshcol.	24 a helyet pedig elnevezték Nehel-Eskólnak (azaz a Szőlőfürt völgyének), minthogy szőlőfürtöt hoztak onnan Izrael fiai.
25 After reconnoitering the land for forty days they returned,	25 Negyven nap múlva aztán, bejárva az egész vidéket, visszatértek a föld kémei,
26 met Moses and Aaron and the whole community of the Israelites in the desert of Paran at Kadesh, made a report to them all, and showed them the fruit of the country.	26 s eljutottak Mózeshez és Áronhoz meg Izrael fiainak egész gyülekezetéhez a Párán-pusztába, amely Kádesnél van. Beszámoltak nekik és az egész közösségnek, megmutatták a föld gyümölcseit
27 They told Moses: "We went into the land to which you sent us. It does indeed flow with milk and honey, and here is its fruit.	27 és elbeszélték, mondván: »Eljutottunk arra a földre, amelyre küldtél minket, s az csakugyan tejjel-mézzel folyó ország, amint ezekből a gyümölcsökből is látható,
28 However, the people who are living in the land are fierce, and the towns are fortified and very strong. Besides, we saw descendants of the Anakim there.	28 de igen erős lakói, nagy és fallal körülvett városai vannak: Enák utódait is láttuk ott.
29 Amalekites live in the region of the Negeb; Hittites, Jebusites and Amorites dwell in the highlands, and Canaanites along the seacoast and the banks of the Jordan."	29 Amalekiták laknak a Délvidéken, hetiták, jebuziták, amoriták a hegységben és kánaániak laknak a tenger mellett és a Jordán folyó körül.«
30 Caleb, however, to quiet the people toward Moses, said, "We ought to go up and seize the land, for we can certainly do so."	30 Zúgolódni kezdett erre a nép Mózes ellen, de Káleb csendesítette őket, és azt mondta: »Csak menjünk fel, s foglaljuk el azt a földet, mert el tudjuk foglalni.«
31 But the men who had gone up with him said, "We cannot attack these people; they are too strong for us."	31 Ám a többiek, akik vele voltak, azt mondták: »Semmiképpen sem mehetünk fel e nép ellen, mert erősebb nálunk.«
32 So they spread discouraging reports among the Israelites about the land they had scouted, saying, "The land that we explored is a country that consumes its inhabitants. And all the people we saw there are huge men,	32 Sőt gyalázták Izrael fiai előtt azt a földet, amelyet megtekintettek, mondván: »A föld, amelyet bejártunk, elemészti lakóit, népe, amelyet láttunk, szálas termetű,
33 veritable giants (the Anakim were a race of giants); we felt like mere grasshoppers, and so we must have seemed to them."	33 láttunk ott jó néhány szörnyet Enák fiaiból, az óriások nemzetségéből, akikhez képest mi olyanoknak látszottunk, mint a sáskák.«
