Sirach 18

1 The Eternal is the judge of all things without exception; the LORD alone is just.	1 Colui che vive in eterno creò insieme tutte le cose. Il Signore solo è giusto, e sussiste invitto re in eterno.
2 Whom has he made equal to describing his works, and who can probe his mighty deeds?	2 Chi è da tanto da raccontarne le opere?
3 Who can measure his majestic power, or exhaust the tale of his mercies?	3 chi può scrutare le sue magnificenze?
4 One cannot lessen, nor increase, nor penetrate the wonders of the LORD.	4 Chi esprimerà la potenza della sua grandezza? e chi potrà ridire la sua misericordia?
5 When a man ends he is only beginning, and when he stops he is still bewildered.	5 Nulla c'è da togliere, nulla da aggiungere; nè è possibile penetrare i portenti di Dio.
6 What is man, of what worth is he? the good, the evil in him, what are these?	6 Quando l'uomo avrà finito [di cercare], sarà [appena] al principio, e quando avrà cessato, si troverà stordito.
7 The sum of a man's days is great if it reaches a hundred years:	7 Cos'è l'uomo e a che serve? che cos'è il bene di lui e che il suo male?
8 Like a drop of sea water, like a grain of sand, so are these few years among the days of eternity.	8 Il numero de' giorni dell'uomo, a dir molto, è di cento anni: come una goccia d'acqua del mare e un granello d'arena, così pochi son gli anni nel giorno dell'eternità!
9 That is why the LORD is patient with men and showers upon them his mercy.	9 Perciò il Signore è paziente con gli uomini, ed effonde su loro la sua misericordia.
10 He sees and understands that their death is grievous, and so he forgives them all the more.	10 Egli vede la presunzione del loro cuore ch'è cattiva, e conosce la loro rovina ch'è triste;
11 Man may be merciful to his fellow man, but the LORD'S mercy reaches all flesh,	11 perciò abbonda con essi in indulgenza, e mostra loro la via della giustizia.
12 Reproving, admonishing, teaching, as a shepherd guides his flock;	12 La pietà dell'uomo è verso il suo vicino; ma la misericordia del Signore [si stende] a ogni carne.
13 Merciful to those who accept his guidance, who are diligent in his precepts.	13 E compatisce, ammaestra, corregge, [riconduce] come un pastore il suo gregge.
14 My son, to your charity add no reproach, nor spoil any gift by harsh words.	14 Ha pietà di chi accetta la correzione della [sua] misericordia, e di chi è sollecito ne' suoi precetti.
15 Like dew that abates a burning wind, so does a word improve a gift.	15 Figliuolo, ne' benefizi [che fai] non infligger vituperio, e in un dono qualsiasi non dar tristezza con male parole.
16 Sometimes the word means more than the gift; both are offered by a kindly man.	16 La rugiada non smorza forse l'ardore [del vento d'Oriente]? così la parola vai meglio del dono.
17 Only a fool upbraids before giving; a grudging gift wears out the expectant eyes.	17 Ecco, non è forse una parola amichevole da più d'un buon dono? or l'una or l'altro si ritrovan presso l'uomo dabbene.
18 Be informed before speaking; before sickness prepare the cure.	18 Lo stolto brutalmente offende, e il dono del malevolo fa strugger gli occhi.
19 Before you are judged, seek merit for yourself, and at the time of visitation you will have a ransom.	19 Prima di giudicare, fatti provvista di giudizio; prima di parlare impara.
20 Before you have fallen, humble yourself; when you have sinned, show repentance.	20 Prima della malattia curati, e prima del giudizio esamina te stesso, e al cospetto di Dio troverai propiziazione.
21 Delay not to forsake sins, neglect it not till you are in distress.	21 Prima d'ammalarti umiliati, e nel tempo dell'infermità mostra la tua [buona] condotta,
22 Let nothing prevent the prompt payment of your vows; wait not to fulfill them when you are dying.	22 Nulla ti trattenga dal pregar sempre, nè ti peritare di accrescere la tua giustizia sino alla morte, perchè la ricompensa di Dio dura in eterno.
23 Before making a vow have the means to fulfill it; be not one who tries the LORD.	23 Prima della preghiera disponi l'anima tua, e non essere come uno che tenta Iddio.
24 Think of wrath and the day of death, the time of vengeance when he will hide his face.	24 Ricordati dell'ira [divina] nel dì finale, e del tempo della retribuzione, quando Egli volterà in là la faccia.
25 Remember the time of hunger in the time of plenty, poverty and want in the day of wealth.	25 Ricordati della penuria nel tempo dell'abbondanza, e degli stenti della miseria ne' giorni della ricchezza.
26 Between morning and evening the weather changes; before the LORD all things are fleeting.	26 Dalla mattina alla sera si muta il tempo; e tutto, così, rapidamente si cambia al cospetto di Dio.
27 A wise man is circumspect in all things; when sin is rife he keeps himself from wrongdoing.	27 L'uomo saggio va cauto in ogni cosa, e ne' giorni de' peccati si guarda da' falli.
28 Any learned man should make wisdom known, and he who attains to her should declare her praise;	28 Ogni intelligente riconosce la sapienza, e a chi l'ha trovata rende omaggio.
29 Those trained in her words must show their wisdom, dispensing sound proverbs like life-giving waters.	29 Gl'intenditori di [saggi] detti, son savi essi stessi, e comprendono la verità e la giustizia, e spandono quasi pioggia proverbi e sentenze.
30 Go not after your lusts, but keep your desires in check.	30 Non andar dietro alle tue passioni, e allontanati dalle tue voglie.
31 If you satisfy your lustful appetites they will make you the sport of your enemies.	31 Se accorderai all'anima tua le sue passioni, farà di te il ludibrio de' tuoi nemici.
32 Have no joy in the pleasures of a moment which bring on poverty redoubled;	32 Non prender gusto ai disordini, per piccoli che siano, perchè continuamente In essi si commette [del male].
33 Become not a glutton and a winebibber with nothing in your purse.	33 Non t'impoverire per gare [di lusso e stravizi], prendendo a prestito, quando nulla hai nella borsa: perchè vorresti male alla tua propria vita.
