1 Then Job answered and said:	1 Giobbe prese la parola e disse:
2 I know well that it is so; but how can a man be justified before God?	2 "Certo, so che è così; come può un uomo essere giusto davanti a Dio?
3 Should one wish to contend with him, he could not answer him once in a thousand times.	3 Se uno volesse disputare con lui, non gli risponderebbe una volta su mille.
4 God is wise in heart and mighty in strength; who has withstood him and remained unscathed?	4 Chi, saggio di mente e potente per la forza, gli si è opposto ed è rimasto illeso?
5 He removes the mountains before they know it; he overturns them in his anger.	5 Egli sposta le montagne senza che se ne avvedano e le sconvolge nella sua collera.
6 He shakes the earth out of its place, and the pillars beneath it tremble.	6 Egli scuote la terra dal suo posto e le sue colonne vacillano.
7 He commands the sun, and it rises not; he seals up the stars.	7 Ordina al sole di non sorgere e mette un sigillo alle stelle.
8 He alone stretches out the heavens and treads upon the crests of the sea.	8 Egli da solo dispiega i cieli e cammina sulle onde del mare.
9 He made the Bear and Orion, the Pleiades and the constellations of the south;	9 Egli forma l'Orsa e l'Orione, le Pleiadi e le Costellazioni del sud.
10 He does great things past finding out, marvelous things beyond reckoning.	10 Compie prodigi insondabili e meraviglie senza numero.
11 Should he come near me, I see him not; should he pass by, I am not aware of him;	11 Ecco, mi passa vicino e non lo vedo, se ne va, e di lui non mi accorgo.
12 Should he seize me forcibly, who can say him nay? Who can say to him, "What are you doing?"	12 Se rapisce qualcosa, chi lo può impedire? Chi può dirgli: "Che cosa fai?".
13 He is God and he does not relent; the helpers of Rahab bow beneath him.	13 Dio non ritira la sua collera, sotto di lui si curvano le legioni di Raab.
14 How much less shall I give him any answer, or choose out arguments against him!	14 Tanto meno potrei io rispondergli o scegliere argomenti contro di lui.
15 Even though I were right, I could not answer him, but should rather beg for what was due me.	15 Anche se avessi ragione non riceverei risposta, dovrei chiedere grazia al mio avversario.
16 If I appealed to him and he answered my call, I could not believe that he would hearken to my words;	16 Anche se rispondesse al mio appello, non crederei che ha ascoltato la mia voce,
17 With a tempest he might overwhelm me, and multiply my wounds without cause;	17 lui, che mi schiaccia nell'uragano e moltiplica senza ragione le mie ferite.
18 He need not suffer me to draw breath, but might fill me with bitter griefs.	18 Non mi lascia riprendere fiato, anzi mi sazia di amarezze.
19 If it be a question of strength, he is mighty; and if of judgment, who will call him to account?	19 Se si tratta di forza, è lui il vigoroso; se si tratta di giudizio, chi lo farà comparire?
20 Though I were right, my own mouth might condemn me; were I innocent, he might put me in the wrong.	20 Anche se fossi innocente, il mio parlare mi condannerebbe; se fossi giusto, mi dichiarerebbe perverso.
21 Though I am innocent, I myself cannot know it; I despise my life.	21 Sono innocente? Non lo so neppure io; detesto la mia vita.
22 It is all one! therefore I say: Both the innocent and the wicked he destroys.	22 Però è lo stesso, ve lo assicuro, egli fa perire l'innocente e il reo!
23 When the scourge slays suddenly, he laughs at the despair of the innocent.	23 Se una calamità miete vittime in un istante, egli se ne ride della disgrazia degl'innocenti.
24 The earth is given into the hands of the wicked; he covers the faces of its judges. If it is not he, who then is it?	24 Lascia la terra nel potere dei malvagi, egli vela il volto dei suoi governanti. Se non è lui, chi dunque può essere?
25 My days are swifter than a runner, they flee away; they see no happiness;	25 I miei giorni passano più veloci di un corriere, fuggono senza gustare felicità.
26 They shoot by like skiffs of reed, like an eagle swooping upon its prey.	26 Scorrono veloci come barche di giunco, come aquila che piomba sulla preda.
27 If I say: I will forget my complaining, I will lay aside my sadness and be of good cheer,	27 Se dico: "Voglio dimenticare la mia afflizione, cambiare il mio volto ed essere lieto",
28 Then I am in dread of all my pains; I know that you will not hold me innocent.	28 mi spavento per tutte le sofferenze; e poi so che tu non mi assolverai.
29 If I must be accounted guilty, why then should I strive in vain?	29 Se sono colpevole, perché affaticarmi invano?
30 If I should wash myself with snow and cleanse my hands with lye,	30 Anche se mi lavassi con la neve e pulissi le mie mani con la potassa,
31 Yet you would plunge me in the ditch, so that my garments would abhor me.	31 tu mi tufferesti nel fango e le mie vesti mi avrebbero in orrore.
32 For he is not a man like myself, that I should answer him, that we should come together in judgment.	32 Egli, infatti, non è un uomo come me, cui possa replicare, e che insieme compariamo in giudizio.
33 Would that there were an arbiter between us, who could lay his hand upon us both	33 Non c'è un giudice tra noi che ponga la mano su noi due,
34 and withdraw his rod from me. Would that his terrors did not frighten me;	34 che allontani da me la sua verga, in modo che il suo terrore non mi spaventi.
35 that I might speak without being afraid of him. Since this is not the case with me,	35 Allora potrei parlare senza temerlo; poiché non è così, sono solo con me stesso.
