1 When Maccabeus and his companions, under the Lord's leadership, had recovered the temple and the city,	1 Allora Maccabeo, e quelli che eran con lui protetti dal Signore ricuperarono il tempio, e la città:
2 they destroyed the altars erected by the Gentiles in the marketplace and the sacred enclosures.	2 E gettarono a terra gli altari eretti per le piazze dagli stranieri, e i templi.
3 After purifying the temple, they made a new altar. Then, with fire struck from flint, they offered sacrifice for the first time in two years, burned incense, and lighted lamps. They also set out the showbread.	3 E purificato il tempio fecero un altare nuovo, e battuto il fuoco per via di pietre focaie offersero sagrifizj, e l'incenso dopo due anni, e vi poser le lampane, e i pani della proposizione.
4 When they had done this, they prostrated themselves and begged the Lord that they might never again fall into such misfortunes, and that if they should sin at any time, he might chastise them with moderation and not hand them over to blasphemous and barbarous Gentiles.	4 Fatte queste cose, prostati per terra pregavano il Signore, che non avesser mai più a cadere in simili sciagure, e che ove mai avesser peccato ricevesser gastigo più mite, e non fosser dati in potere di uomini barbari, e bestemmiatori.
5 On the anniversary of the day on which the temple had been profaned by the Gentiles, that is, the twenty-fifth of the same month Chislev, the purification of the temple took place.	5 Or egli avvenne, che nel giorno in cui il tempio era stato profanato dagli stranieri, nello stesso giorno ne fu fatta la purificazione ai venticinque del mese di Casleu.
6 The Jews celebrated joyfully for eight days as on the feast of Booths, remembering how, a little while before, they had spent the feast of Booths living like wild animals in caves on the mountains.	6 E con letizia fecer festa per otto giorni, come pei tabernacoli, rammemorando come poco prima aveano passato il di dei tabernacoli stando per le montagne, e nelle caverne a guisa di fiere.
7 Carrying rods entwined with leaves, green branches and palms, they sang hymns of grateful praise to him who had brought about the purification of his own Place.	7 Per la qunl cosa portavavano dei tirsi, e dei rami verdeggianti, e delle palme in onore di lui, che diede loro la fortuna di purificare il suo tempio.
8 By public edict and decree they prescribed that the whole Jewish nation should celebrate these days every year.	8 E d'unanime consenso fecer pubblico decreto per tutta quanta la nazione Giudea, che que' giorni siano solennizzati tutti gli anni.
9 Such was the end of Antiochus surnamed Epiphanes.	9 La morte di Antioco soprannominato Epifane, fu come dicemmo.
10 Now we shall relate what happened under Antiochus Eupator, the son of that godless man, and shall give a summary of the chief evils caused by the wars.	10 Adesso poi racconteremo le geste di Eupatore figliuolo dell'empio Antioco, riepilogando i mali avvenuti nelle guerre.
11 When Eupator succeeded to the kingdom, he put a certain Lysias in charge of the government as commander-in-chief of Coelesyria and Phoenicia.	11 Perocché egli entrato al possesso del regno diede il maneggio degli affari a un certo Lisia capitano delle milizie della Siria, e della Fenicia.
12 Ptolemy, surnamed Macron, had taken the lead in treating the Jews fairly because of the previous injustice that had been done them, and he endeavored to have peaceful relations with them.	12 Perocché Tolomeo detto il Magro avea risoluto di osservare esattamente la giustizia riguardo agli Ebrei, e di mantener loro la pace particolarmente a motivo dell'ingiustizie fatte contro di essi.
13 As a result, he was accused before Eupator by the King's Friends. In fact, on all sides he heard himself called a traitor for having abandoned Cyprus, which Philometor had entrusted to him, and for having gone over to Antiochus Epiphanes. Since he could not command the respect due to his high office, he ended his life by taking poison.	13 Ma accusato perciò sovente presso Eupatore dagli amici del re, e tacciato sovente di traditore per avere abbandonata Cipro, di cui gli era stato affidato il governo da Filometore, e perché dopo essere passato al servizio di Antioco Epifane avea disertato anche da lui, finì la vita col veleno.
14 When Gorgias became governor of the region, he employed foreign troops and used every opportunity to attack the Jews.	14 Ma Gorgia, che aveva il governo di que' luoghi, assoldata gente straniera, frequentemente metteva alle strette i Giudei.
15 At the same time the Idumeans, who held some important strongholds, were harassing the Jews; they welcomed fugitives from Jerusalem and endeavored to continue the war.	15 E i Giudei, che occupavano delle fortezze in luoghi opportuni accoglievano quelli, che venivano scacciati da Gerusalemme, e tentavano di far guerra.
16 Maccabeus and his companions, after public prayers asking God to be their ally, moved quickly against the strongholds of the Idumeans.	16 Ma quelli che erano con Maccabeo, fatta orazione per chiedere al Signore, che li soccorresse, andarono ad assalire le fortezze degli Idumei:
17 Attacking vigorously, they gained control of the places, drove back all who manned the walls, and cut down those who opposed them, killing as many as twenty thousand men.	17 E combattendole vigorosamente si fecer padroni di que' luoghi, sconfissero quelli, che si opposero, e in tutto trucidarono nulla meno di venti mila persone.
18 When at least nine thousand took refuge in two very strong towers, containing everything necessary to sustain a siege,	18 Ed essendo fuggiti alcuni in due torri grandemente forti, fornite di rotte le provisioni per difendersi,
19 Maccabeus left Simon and Joseph, along with Zacchaeus and his men, in sufficient numbers to besiege them, while he himself went off to places where he was more urgently needed.	19 Maccabeo lasciò la cura di espugnarle a Simone, e a Giuseppe, e anche a Zaccheo col sufficiente corpo di truppe, che eran con essi, ed egli andò dove i più urgenti bisogni della guerra il chiamavano.
20 But some of the men in Simon's force who were money lovers let themselves be bribed by some of the men in the towers; on receiving seventy thousand drachmas, they allowed a number of them to escape.	20 Ma la gente di Simone per la loro avarizia si lasciaron corrompere col denaro da alcuni che erano in quelle torri, e tirate settantamila di dramme permisero ad alcuni di andarsene.
21 When Maccabeus was told what had happened, he assembled the rulers of the people and accused those men of having sold their kinsmen for money by setting their enemies free to fight against them.	21 Ma riferito il fatto a Maccabeo, adunati i capi del popolo, accusò coloro di aver venduto per denaro i fratelli, lasciando che se n'andassero i loro nemici.
22 So he put them to death as traitors, and without delay captured the two towers.	22 Per la qual cosa fece morire que' traditori, e subitamente si fece padrone delle due torri.
23 As he was successful at arms in all his undertakings, he destroyed more than twenty thousand men in the two strongholds.	23 E riuscendo ogni cosa felicemente alle sue armi, e alle sue mani, nelle due fortezze uccise più di venti mila uomini.
24 Timothy, who had previously been defeated by the Jews, gathered a tremendous force of foreign troops and collected a large number of cavalry from Asia; then he appeared in Judea, ready to conquer it by force.	24 Ma Timoteo, il quale era stato prima vinto da' Giudei, messo insieme un esercito di gente straniera, e raunata la cavallerìa dell'Asia, venne come per impadronirsi colle armi della Giudea.
25 At his approach, Maccabeus and his men made supplication to God, sprinkling earth upon their heads and girding their loins in sackcloth.	25 Ma Maccabèo, e i suoi, mentre egli si avvicinava, pregavano il Signore, spargendo sulle loro teste la terra, e avendo attorno ai fianchi il cilizio,
26 Lying prostrate at the foot of the altar, they begged him to be gracious to them, and to be an enemy to their enemies, and a foe to their foes, as the law declares.	26 Prostrati appiè dell'altare, affinchè egli fosse propizio con essi, e nemico a' lor nemici, e avverso ai loro avversarj, come dice la legge.
27 After the prayer, they took up their arms and advanced a considerable distance from the city, halting when they were close to the enemy.	27 Quindi dopo l'orazione prese le armi avanzandosi in qualche distanza dalla città, e avvicinatisi al nemico, si fermarono.
28 As soon as dawn broke, the armies joined battle, the one having as pledge of success and victory not only their valor but also their reliance on the Lord, and the other taking fury as their leader in the fight.	28 E al primo spuntar debole vender gli uni, e gli altri a battaglia: e questi aveano col loro valore per mallevadore della vittoria, e del buon evento il Signore; quelli poi aveano per guida nella battaglia l'animo loro.
29 In the midst of the fierce battle, there appeared to the enemy from the heavens five majestic men riding on golden-bridled horses, who led the Jews on.	29 Ma nel maggior caldo della zuffa gli avversari videro apparire dal cielo cinque uomini sopra cavalli ornati di briglie d'oro, che facevan figura di capitani de' Giudei:
30 They surrounded Maccabeus, and shielding him with their own armor, kept him from being wounded. They shot arrows and hurled thunderbolts at the enemy, who were bewildered and blinded, thrown into confusion and routed.	30 De' quali due, preso in mezzo Maccabeo, colle loro armi lo coprivano, e lo difendevano; ma dardi, e fulmini scagliavano contro gli avversari; per la qual cosa accecati, e confusi, e pieni di sbigottimento cadevan per terra.
31 Twenty-five hundred of their foot soldiers and six hundred of their horsemen were slain.	31 E furono uccisi venti mila cinque cento fanti, e seicento cavalieri.
32 Timothy, however, fled to a well-fortified stronghold called Gazara, where Chaereas was in command.	32 E Timoteo fuggì a Gazara piazza forte, di cui aveva il comando Cherea.
33 For four days Maccabeus and his men eagerly besieged the fortress.	33 E Maccabeo colla sua gente piena di allegrezza assediarono quattro giorni quella piazza.
34 Those inside, relying on the strength of the place, kept repeating outrageous blasphemies and uttering abominable words.	34 Ma quelli, che v' eran dentro fidandosi della fortezza di quel luogo dicevano infinite villanie, e vomitavano parole da non dirsi.
35 When the fifth day dawned, twenty young men in the army of Maccabeus, angered over such blasphemies, bravely stormed the wall and with savage fury cut down everyone they encountered.	35 Ma appena spuntò il quinto giorno, venti giovani di quelli che erano con Maccabeo, irritati dalle bestemmie di coloro, si accostarono animosamente alle mura, e con animo risoluto vi saliron sopra:
36 Others who climbed up the same way swung around on the defenders, taking the besieged in the rear; they put the towers to the torch, spread the fire and burned the blasphemers alive. Still others broke down the gates and let in the rest of the troops, who took possession of the city.	36 E saliti degli altri nello stesso modo presero a dar fuoco alle torri, e alle porte, e a brugiar vivi quei bestemmiatori.
37 Timothy had hidden in a cistern, but they killed him, along with his brother Chaereas, and Apollophanes.	37 E per due interi giorni devastarono la fortezza, e trovato Timoteo, che si era nascoso in un certo luogo, lo uccisero insieme con Cherea suo fratello, e con Apollofane.
38 On completing these exploits, they blessed, with hymns of grateful praise, the Lord who shows great kindness to Israel and grants them victory.	38 Condotte a fine queste imprese, con inni, e cantici benedicevano il Signore, il quale avea fatto cose grandi in Israele, e ad essi avea data la vittoria.
