1 When the noise of the crowd surrounding the council had subsided, Holofernes, commander-in-chief of the Assyrian army, said to Achior, in the presence of the whole throng of coastland peoples, of the Moabites, and of the Ammonite mercenaries:	1 E dopo che cessarono di parlare, rimase Oloferne molto indignato, e disse ad Achior:
2 "Who are you, Achior, to prophesy among us as you have done today, and to tell us not to fight against the Israelites because their God protects them? What god is there beside Nebuchadnezzar? He will send his force and destroy them from the face of the earth. Their God will not save them;	2 Però che tu ci hai profetato, dicendo che la gente d' Israel sarà difesa dal suo Iddio, acciò ch' io ti dimostri che non è Iddio in terra, se non Nabucodonosor,
3 but we, the servants of Nebuchadnezzar, will strike them down as one man, for they will be unable to withstand the force of our cavalry.	3 quando noi avremo percossi tutti loro, come se percuotessimo uno uomo, allora e tu con loro perirai di coltello degli Assirii, e tutto Israel insieme con te sarà posto in perdizione;
4 We will overwhelm them with it, and the mountains shall be drunk with their blood, and their plains filled with their corpses. Not a trace of them shall survive our attack: they shall utterly perish, says King Nebuchadnezzar, lord of all the earth; for he has spoken, and his words shall not remain unfulfilled.	4 e proverai che Nabucodonosor sia signore di tutta la terra; e allora il coltello del mio esercito passerà per li lati del corpo tuo, e perforato cadrai fra li feriti (e uccisi) d' Israel, e non respirerai più, persino che tu sii esterminato con loro.
5 As for you, Achior, you Ammonite mercenary, for saying these things in a moment of perversity you shall not see my face after today, until I have taken revenge on this race of people from Egypt.	5 Ma se tu pensi che la tua profezia sia vera, non s'attristi il tuo viso; e non rimanga più la faccia tua pallida, se tu pensi che il mio parlare non abbi effetto.
6 Then at my return, the sword of my army or the spear of my servants will pierce your sides, and you shall fall among their slain.	6 E acciò che tu conoschi che tu insieme con loro abbi a provare per esperienza questo ch' io ho detto, ecco ch' io in quest' ora ti voglio mandare a quello popolo, e accompagnarti con loro, acciò che quando loro riceveranno le pene degne del mio coltello, tu rimanghi sottoposto a questa vendetta.
7 My servants will now conduct you to the mountain region, and leave you at one of the towns along the ascent.	7 Allora Oloferne comandò alli servi suoi, che pigliassero Achior, e che lo menassero in Betulia e desserlo nelle mani de' figliuoli d' Israel.
8 You shall not die till you are destroyed together with them.	8 E pigliato che l'ebbono i servi di Oloferne, andarono per i campi (verso Betulia); e quando furono prossimi alli monti, uscirono fuori contro a loro gli uomini che gettavano le pietre con le fionde.
9 If you still cherish the hope that they will not be taken, then there is no need for you to be downcast. I have spoken, and my words shall not prove false in any respect."	9 Loro, vedendo questo, declinarono a lato ai monti, e legorono Achior ad uno arbore con le mani e con i piedi; e così legato con le funi lo lasciorono, e ritornarono al suo signore.
10 Then Holofernes ordered the servants who were standing by in his tent to seize Achior, conduct him to Bethulia, and hand him over to the Israelites.	10 E (veduto questo) i figliuoli d'Israel scesero di Betulia, e vennero a lui. Lo qual isciolto, lo menarono in Betulia; e posto nel mezzo del popolo, addimandarono quale fosse la cagione di questo, che gli Assirii l'avessono lasciato a questo modo legato.
11 So the servants took him in custody and brought him out of the camp into the plain. From there they led him into the mountain region till they reached the springs below Bethulia.	11 In quel tempo erano in quello luogo prìncipi Ozia figliuolo di Mica della tribù di Simeon e Carmi il qual anco si chiamava Gotoniel.
12 When the men of the city saw them, they seized their weapons and ran out of the city to the crest of the ridge; and all the slingers blocked the ascent of Holofernes' servants by hurling stones upon them.	12 E Achior, istando nel mezzo degli antichi e nel cospetto di tutti, disse tutte quelle cose che lui avea detto essendo dimandato da Oloferne, e come il popolo di Oloferne lo avea voluto uccidere per cagione di questa risposta;
13 So they took cover below the mountain, where they bound Achior and left him lying at the foot of the mountain; then they returned to their lord.	13 e a che modo Oloferne si era turbato, e che per questo comandò che lui vi fosse dato nelle mani, acciò che quando lui vincerà i figliuoli d' Israel, che anco Achior sia per suo comandamento con diversi supplizii ucciso, per questo che lui disse che il Dio del cielo sarà difensore d' Israel.
14 The Israelites came down to him from their city, loosed him, and brought him into Bethulia. They haled him before the rulers of the city,	14 E avendo Achior esposto tutte queste cose, tutto il popolo si chinò con la faccia sua, adorando il Signore; e tutti, di una volontà, con una universal lamentazione e pianto pregavano,
15 who in those days were Uzziah, son of Micah of the tribe of Simeon, Chabris, son of Gothoniel, and Charmis, son of Melchiel.	15 dicendo: Signore Iddio del cielo e della terra, riguarda alla superbia di questa gente e alla nostra umiltà, e considera alla faccia de' tuoi servi, e dimostra che tu non abbandoni quelli che si confidano di te; e quelli che presumono di sè, e confidansi di gloriarsi nella sua virtù, tu gli umillii.
16 They then convened all the elders of the city; and all their young men, as well as the women, gathered in haste at the place of assembly. They placed Achior in the center of the throng, and Uzziah questioned him about what had happened.	16 E compiuto il pianto, e compiuta la orazione del popolo per tutto il dì, consolorono Achior,
17 He replied by giving them an account of what was said in the council of Holofernes, and of all his own words among the Assyrian officers, and of all the boasting threats of Holofernes against the house of Israel.	17 dicendo: lo Dio de' padri nostri, la virtù del quale tu hai predicato, lui ti darà questa retribuzione, che tu piuttosto vederai la sua distruzione.
18 At this the people fell prostrate and worshiped God; and they cried out:	18 E conciosia cosa che Iddio abbi dato questa libertà ai servi suoi, sia anco Dio teco nel mezzo di noi; chè sì come a te piacerà, così tu conversi [nosco] con tutti i tuoi.
19 "Lord, God of heaven, behold their arrogance! Have pity on the lowliness of our people, and look with favor this day on those who are consecrated to you."	19 Allora Ozia, finito lo consiglio, lo ricevè in casa sua, e fece una grande cena.
20 Then they reassured Achior and praised him highly.	20 E chiamati tutti li principali e onorati insieme, compiuto lo digiuno, cenorono.
21 Uzziah brought him from the assembly to his home, where he gave a banquet for the elders. That whole night they called upon the God of Israel for help.	21 E dopo questo, chiamato tutto il popolo, per tutta la notte stettero nella chiesa in orazione, dimandando adiutorio da Dio d' Israel.
