NEW AMERICAN BIBLEKING JAMES BIBLE
Abraham married another wife, whose name was Keturah.1 Then again Abraham took a wife, and her name was Keturah.
She bore him Zimran, Jokshan, Medan, Midian, Ishbak, and Shuah.2 And she bare him Zimran, and Jokshan, and Medan, and Midian, and Ishbak, and Shuah.
Jokshan became the father of Sheba and Dedan. The descendants of Dedan were the Asshurim, the Letushim, and the Leummim.3 And Jokshan begat Sheba, and Dedan. And the sons of Dedan were Asshurim, and Letushim, and Leummim.
The descendants of Midian were Ephah, Epher, Hanoch, Abida, and Eldaah. All of these were descendants of Keturah.4 And the sons of Midian; Ephah, and Epher, and Hanoch, and Abida, and Eldaah. All these were the children of Keturah.
Abraham deeded everything that he owned to his son Isaac.5 And Abraham gave all that he had unto Isaac.
To his sons by concubinage, however, he made grants while he was still living, as he sent them away eastward, to the land of Kedem, away from his son Isaac.6 But unto the sons of the concubines, which Abraham had, Abraham gave gifts, and sent them away from Isaac his son, while he yet lived, eastward, unto the east country.
The whole span of Abraham's life was one hundred and seventy-five years.7 And these are the days of the years of Abraham's life which he lived, an hundred threescore and fifteen years.
Then he breathed his last, dying at a ripe old age, grown old after a full life; and he was taken to his kinsmen.8 Then Abraham gave up the ghost, and died in a good old age, an old man, and full of years; and was gathered to his people.
His sons Isaac and Ishmael buried him in the cave of Machpelah, in the field of Ephron, son of Zohar the Hittite, which faces Mamre,9 And his sons Isaac and Ishmael buried him in the cave of Machpelah, in the field of Ephron the son of Zohar the Hittite, which is before Mamre;
the field that Abraham had bought from the Hittites; there he was buried next to his wife Sarah.10 The field which Abraham purchased of the sons of Heth: there was Abraham buried, and Sarah his wife.
After the death of Abraham, God blessed his son Isaac, who made his home near Beer-lahai-roi.11 And it came to pass after the death of Abraham, that God blessed his son Isaac; and Isaac dwelt by the well Lahai-roi.
These are the descendants of Abraham's son Ishmael, whom Hagar the Egyptian, Sarah's slave, bore to Abraham.12 Now these are the generations of Ishmael, Abraham's son, whom Hagar the Egyptian, Sarah's handmaid, bare unto Abraham:
These are the names of Ishmael's sons, listed in the order of their birth: Nebaioth (Ishmael's firstborn), Kedar, Adbeel, Mibsam,13 And these are the names of the sons of Ishmael, by their names, according to their generations: the firstborn of Ishmael, Nebajoth; and Kedar, and Adbeel, and Mibsam,
Mishma, Dumah, Massa,14 And Mishma, and Dumah, and Massa,
Hadad, Tema, Jetur, Naphish, and Kedemah.15 Hadar, and Tema, Jetur, Naphish, and Kedemah:
These are the sons of Ishmael, their names by their villages and encampments; twelve chieftains of as many tribal groups.16 These are the sons of Ishmael, and these are their names, by their towns, and by their castles; twelve princes according to their nations.
The span of Ishmael's life was one hundred and thirty-seven years. After he had breathed his last and died, he was taken to his kinsmen.17 And these are the years of the life of Ishmael, an hundred and thirty and seven years: and he gave up the ghost and died; and was gathered unto his people.
The Ishmaelites ranged from Havilah-by-Shur, which is on the border of Egypt, all the way to Asshur; and each of them pitched camp in opposition to his various kinsmen.18 And they dwelt from Havilah unto Shur, that is before Egypt, as thou goest toward Assyria: and he died in the presence of all his brethren.
This is the family history of Isaac, son of Abraham; Abraham had begotten Isaac.19 And these are the generations of Isaac, Abraham's son: Abraham begat Isaac:
Isaac was forty years old when he married Rebekah, the daughter of Bethuel the Aramean of Paddan-aram and the sister of Laban the Aramean.20 And Isaac was forty years old when he took Rebekah to wife, the daughter of Bethuel the Syrian of Padan-aram, the sister to Laban the Syrian.
Isaac entreated the LORD on behalf of his wife, since she was sterile. The LORD heard his entreaty, and Rebekah became pregnant.21 And Isaac intreated the LORD for his wife, because she was barren: and the LORD was intreated of him, and Rebekah his wife conceived.
But the children in her womb jostled each other so much that she exclaimed, "If this is to be so, what good will it do me!" She went to consult the LORD,22 And the children struggled together within her; and she said, If it be so, why am I thus? And she went to inquire of the LORD.
and he answered her: "Two nations are in your womb, two peoples are quarreling while still within you; But one shall surpass the other, and the older shall serve the younger."23 And the LORD said unto her, Two nations are in thy womb, and two manner of people shall be separated from thy bowels; and the one people shall be stronger than the other people; and the elder shall serve the younger.
When the time of her delivery came, there were twins in her womb.24 And when her days to be delivered were fulfilled, behold, there were twins in her womb.
The first to emerge was reddish, and his whole body was like a hairy mantle; so they named him Esau.25 And the first came out red, all over like an hairy garment; and they called his name Esau.
His brother came out next, gripping Esau's heel; so they named him Jacob. Isaac was sixty years old when they were born.26 And after that came his brother out, and his hand took hold on Esau's heel; and his name was called Jacob: and Isaac was threescore years old when she bare them.
As the boys grew up, Esau became a skillful hunter, a man who lived in the open; whereas Jacob was a simple man, who kept to his tents.27 And the boys grew: and Esau was a cunning hunter, a man of the field; and Jacob was a plain man, dwelling in tents.
Isaac preferred Esau, because he was fond of game; but Rebekah preferred Jacob.28 And Isaac loved Esau, because he did eat of his venison: but Rebekah loved Jacob.
Once, when Jacob was cooking a stew, Esau came in from the open, famished.29 And Jacob sod pottage: and Esau came from the field, and he was faint:
He said to Jacob, "Let me gulp down some of that red stuff; I'm starving." (That is why he was called Edom.)30 And Esau said to Jacob, Feed me, I pray thee, with that same red pottage; for I am faint: therefore was his name called Edom.
But Jacob replied, "First give me your birthright in exchange for it."31 And Jacob said, Sell me this day thy birthright.
"Look," said Esau, "I'm on the point of dying. What good will any birthright do me?"32 And Esau said, Behold, I am at the point to die: and what profit shall this birthright do to me?
But Jacob insisted, "Swear to me first!" So he sold Jacob his birthright under oath.33 And Jacob said, Swear to me this day; and he sware unto him: and he sold his birthright unto Jacob.
Jacob then gave him some bread and the lentil stew; and Esau ate, drank, got up, and went his way. Esau cared little for his birthright.34 Then Jacob gave Esau bread and pottage of lentiles; and he did eat and drink, and rose up, and went his way: thus Esau despised his birthright.
