1 ובשנת שמנה עשרה למלך ירבעם בן נבט מלך אבים על יהודה	1 In the eighteenth year of King Jeroboam son of Nebat, Abijam became king of Judah
2 שלש שנים מלך בירושלם ושם אמו מעכה בת אבישלום	2 and reigned for three years in Jerusalem. His mother's name was Maacah descendant of Absalom.
3 וילך בכל חטאות אביו אשר עשה לפניו ולא היה לבבו שלם עם יהוה אלהיו כלבב דוד אביו	3 In everything he fol owed the sinful example of his father before him; his heart was not wholly withYahweh his God, as the heart of David his ancestor had been.
4 כי למען דוד נתן יהוה אלהיו לו ניר בירושלם להקים את בנו אחריו ולהעמיד את ירושלם	4 However, for David's sake, Yahweh his God gave him a lamp in Jerusalem, with a son to succeed him,so keeping Jerusalem secure;
5 אשר עשה דוד את הישר בעיני יהוה ולא סר מכל אשר צוהו כל ימי חייו רק בדבר אוריה החתי	5 for David had done what Yahweh regarded as right and had never in all his life disobeyed whatever hecommanded him (except in the matter of Uriah the Hittite).
6 ומלחמה היתה בין רחבעם ובין ירבעם כל ימי חייו	6 .
7 ויתר דברי אבים וכל אשר עשה הלוא הם כתובים על ספר דברי הימים למלכי יהודה ומלחמה היתה בין אבים ובין ירבעם	7 The rest of the history of Abijam, his entire career, is this not recorded in the Book of the Annals of theKings of Judah? Abijam and Jeroboam made war on each other.
8 וישכב אבים עם אבתיו ויקברו אתו בעיר דוד וימלך אסא בנו תחתיו	8 When Abijam fel asleep with his ancestors, he was buried in the City of David; his son Asa succeededhim.
9 ובשנת עשרים לירבעם מלך ישראל מלך אסא מלך יהודה	9 In the twentieth year of Jeroboam king of Israel, Asa became king of Judah
10 וארבעים ואחת שנה מלך בירושלם ושם אמו מעכה בת אבישלום	10 and reigned for forty-one years in Jerusalem. His mother's name was Maacah descendant ofAbsalom.
11 ויעש אסא הישר בעיני יהוה כדוד אביו	11 Asa did what Yahweh regards as right, as his ancestor David had done.
12 ויעבר הקדשים מן הארץ ויסר את כל הגללים אשר עשו אבתיו	12 He drove the male prostitutes out of the country and got rid of all the idols which his ancestors hadmade.
13 וגם את מעכה אמו ויסרה מגבירה אשר עשתה מפלצת לאשרה ויכרת אסא את מפלצתה וישרף בנחל קדרון	13 He even deprived his grandmother Maacah of the dignity of Great Lady for having made an obscenityfor Asherah; Asa cut down her obscenity and burnt it in the ravine of the Kidron.
14 והבמות לא סרו רק לבב אסא היה שלם עם יהוה כל ימיו	14 Though the high places were not abolished, Asa's heart was loyal to Yahweh throughout his life.
15 ויבא את קדשי אביו וקדשו בית יהוה כסף וזהב וכלים	15 He deposited his father's and his own dedicated gifts of silver, gold and sacred vessels in the Templeof Yahweh.
16 ומלחמה היתה בין אסא ובין בעשא מלך ישראל כל ימיהם	16 Asa and Baasha king of Israel were at war with each other throughout their reigns.
17 ויעל בעשא מלך ישראל על יהודה ויבן את הרמה לבלתי תת יצא ובא לאסא מלך יהודה	17 Baasha king of Israel marched on Judah and fortified Ramah to blockade Asa king of Judah.
18 ויקח אסא את כל הכסף והזהב הנותרים באוצרות בית יהוה ואת אוצרות בית מלך ויתנם ביד עבדיו וישלחם המלך אסא אל בן הדד בן טברמן בן חזיון מלך ארם הישב בדמשק לאמר	18 Asa then took al the remaining silver and gold left in the treasuries of the Temple of Yahweh and theroyal palace. Entrusting this to his servants, King Asa sent them with the fol owing message to Ben-Hadad sonof Tabrimmon, son of Hezion, the king of Aram who lived in Damascus,
19 ברית ביני ובינך בין אבי ובין אביך הנה שלחתי לך שחד כסף וזהב לך הפרה את בריתך את בעשא מלך ישראל ויעלה מעלי	19 'Let us make an al iance between myself and yourself, between my father and your father! Look, Ihave sent you a gift of silver and gold. Come, break off your al iance with Baasha king of Israel, which wil makehim withdraw from me.'
20 וישמע בן הדד אל המלך אסא וישלח את שרי החילים אשר לו על ערי ישראל ויך את עיון ואת דן ואת אבל בית מעכה ואת כל כנרות על כל ארץ נפתלי	20 Ben-Hadad listened favourably to King Asa, and sent the generals of his armies to attack the towns ofIsrael; he ravaged Ijon, Dan, Abel-Beth-Maacah, al Chinneroth, and the whole territory of Naphtali.
21 ויהי כשמע בעשא ויחדל מבנות את הרמה וישב בתרצה	21 When Baasha heard this he gave up fortifying Ramah and retired to Tirzah.
22 והמלך אסא השמיע את כל יהודה אין נקי וישאו את אבני הרמה ואת עציה אשר בנה בעשא ויבן בם המלך אסא את גבע בנימן ואת המצפה	22 King Asa then summoned al Judah, no one was exempt; they took away the stones and timber withwhich Baasha had been fortifying Ramah, and King Asa used them to fortify Geba of Benjamin and Mizpah.
23 ויתר כל דברי אסא וכל גבורתו וכל אשר עשה והערים אשר בנה הלא המה כתובים על ספר דברי הימים למלכי יהודה רק לעת זקנתו חלה את רגליו	23 The rest of the history of Asa, al his valour, his entire career, is this not recorded in the Book of theAnnals of the Kings of Judah? In his old age, however, he contracted a disease of his feet.
24 וישכב אסא עם אבתיו ויקבר עם אבתיו בעיר דוד אביו וימלך יהושפט בנו תחתיו	24 When Asa fell asleep with his ancestors, he was buried with his ancestors in the City of his ancestorDavid; his son Jehoshaphat succeeded him.
25 ונדב בן ירבעם מלך על ישראל בשנת שתים לאסא מלך יהודה וימלך על ישראל שנתים	25 Nadab son of Jeroboam became king of Israel in the second year of Asa king of Judah, and hereigned over Israel for two years.
26 ויעש הרע בעיני יהוה וילך בדרך אביו ובחטאתו אשר החטיא את ישראל	26 He did what is displeasing to Yahweh; he copied his father's example and the sin into which he hadled Israel.
27 ויקשר עליו בעשא בן אחיה לבית יששכר ויכהו בעשא בגבתון אשר לפלשתים ונדב וכל ישראל צרים על גבתון	27 Baasha son of Ahijah, of the House of Issachar, plotted against him and murdered him at Gibbethon,a Philistine town which Nadab and all Israel were besieging.
28 וימתהו בעשא בשנת שלש לאסא מלך יהודה וימלך תחתיו	28 Baasha kil ed Nadab and succeeded him in the third year of Asa king of Judah.
29 ויהי כמלכו הכה את כל בית ירבעם לא השאיר כל נשמה לירבעם עד השמדו כדבר יהוה אשר דבר ביד עבדו אחיה השילני	29 No sooner was he king than he butchered the entire House of Jeroboam, not sparing a soul, and putan end to it, just as Yahweh had foretold through his servant Ahijah of Shiloh,
30 על חטאות ירבעם אשר חטא ואשר החטיא את ישראל בכעסו אשר הכעיס את יהוה אלהי ישראל	30 because of the sins which he had committed and into which he had led Israel, and because he hadprovoked the anger of Yahweh, God of Israel.
31 ויתר דברי נדב וכל אשר עשה הלא הם כתובים על ספר דברי הימים למלכי ישראל	31 The rest of the history of Nadab, his entire career, is this not recorded in
32 ומלחמה היתה בין אסא ובין בעשא מלך ישראל כל ימיהם	32 the Book of the Annals of the Kings of Israel?
33 בשנת שלש לאסא מלך יהודה מלך בעשא בן אחיה על כל ישראל בתרצה עשרים וארבע שנה	33 In the third year of Asa king of Judah, Baasha son of Ahijah became king of Israel at Tirzah fortwenty-four years.
34 ויעש הרע בעיני יהוה וילך בדרך ירבעם ובחטאתו אשר החטיא את ישראל	34 He did what is displeasing to Yahweh; he copied the example of Jeroboam and the sin into which hehad led Israel.
