υπολαβων δε ιωβ λεγει | 1 Job spoke next. He said: |
επ' αληθειας οιδα οτι ουτως εστιν πως γαρ εσται δικαιος βροτος παρα κυριω | 2 Indeed, I know it is as you say: how could anyone claim to be upright before God? |
εαν γαρ βουληται κριθηναι αυτω ου μη υπακουση αυτω ινα μη αντειπη προς ενα λογον αυτου εκ χιλιων | 3 Anyone trying to argue matters with him, could not give him one answer in a thousand. |
σοφος γαρ εστιν διανοια κραταιος τε και μεγας τις σκληρος γενομενος εναντιον αυτου υπεμεινεν | 4 Among the wisest and the hardiest, who then can successful y defy him? |
ο παλαιων ορη και ουκ οιδασιν ο καταστρεφων αυτα οργη | 5 He moves the mountains, though they do not know it; he throws them down when he is angry. |
ο σειων την υπ' ουρανον εκ θεμελιων οι δε στυλοι αυτης σαλευονται | 6 He shakes the earth, and moves it from its place, making al its pil ars tremble. |
ο λεγων τω ηλιω και ουκ ανατελλει κατα δε αστρων κατασφραγιζει | 7 The sun, at his command, forbears to rise, and on the stars he sets a seal. |
ο τανυσας τον ουρανον μονος και περιπατων ως επ' εδαφους επι θαλασσης | 8 He and no other has stretched out the heavens and trampled on the back of the Sea. |
ο ποιων πλειαδα και εσπερον και αρκτουρον και ταμιεια νοτου | 9 He has made the Bear and Orion, the Pleiades and the Mansions of the South. |
ο ποιων μεγαλα και ανεξιχνιαστα ενδοξα τε και εξαισια ων ουκ εστιν αριθμος | 10 The works he does are great and unfathomable, and his marvels cannot be counted. |
εαν υπερβη με ου μη ιδω και εαν παρελθη με ουδ' ως εγνων | 11 If he passes me, I do not see him; he slips by, imperceptible to me. |
εαν απαλλαξη τις αποστρεψει η τις ερει αυτω τι εποιησας | 12 If he snatches his prey, who is going to stop him or dare to ask, 'What are you doing?' |
αυτος γαρ απεστραπται οργην υπ' αυτου εκαμφθησαν κητη τα υπ' ουρανον | 13 God does not renounce his anger: beneath him, Rahab's minions stil lie prostrate. |
εαν δε μου υπακουσηται η διακρινει τα ρηματα μου | 14 And here am I, proposing to defend myself and select my arguments against him! |
εαν τε γαρ ω δικαιος ουκ εισακουσεται μου του κριματος αυτου δεηθησομαι | 15 Even if I am upright, what point is there in answering him? I can only plead for mercy with my judge! |
εαν τε καλεσω και υπακουση ου πιστευω οτι εισακηκοεν μου | 16 And if he deigned to answer my citation, I cannot believe he would listen to what I said, |
μη γνοφω με εκτριψη πολλα δε μου τα συντριμματα πεποιηκεν δια κενης | 17 he who crushes me for one hair, who, for no reason, wounds and wounds again, |
ουκ εα γαρ με αναπνευσαι ενεπλησεν δε με πικριας | 18 not even letting me regain my breath, with so much bitterness he fills me! |
οτι μεν γαρ ισχυι κρατει τις ουν κριματι αυτου αντιστησεται | 19 Shal I try force? Look how strong he is! Or go to court? But who wil summon him? |
εαν γαρ ω δικαιος το στομα μου ασεβησει εαν τε ω αμεμπτος σκολιος αποβησομαι | 20 If I prove myself upright, his mouth may condemn me, even if I am innocent, he may pronounce meperverse. |
ειτε γαρ ησεβησα ουκ οιδα τη ψυχη πλην οτι αφαιρειται μου η ζωη | 21 But am I innocent? I am no longer sure, and life itself I despise! |
διο ειπον μεγαν και δυναστην απολλυει οργη | 22 It is al one, and hence I boldly say: he destroys innocent and guilty alike. |
οτι φαυλοι εν θανατω εξαισιω αλλα δικαιοι καταγελωνται | 23 When a sudden deadly scourge descends, he laughs at the plight of the innocent. |
παραδεδονται γαρ εις χειρας ασεβους προσωπα κριτων αυτης συγκαλυπτει ει δε μη αυτος τις εστιν | 24 When a country falls into the power of the wicked, he veils the faces of its judges. Or if not he, whoelse? |
ο δε βιος μου εστιν ελαφροτερος δρομεως απεδρασαν και ουκ ειδοσαν | 25 My days pass: more swiftly than a runner they flee away with never a glimpse of happiness, |
η και εστιν ναυσιν ιχνος οδου η αετου πετομενου ζητουντος βοραν | 26 they skim past like a reed canoe, like an eagle swooping on its prey. |
εαν τε γαρ ειπω επιλησομαι λαλων συγκυψας τω προσωπω στεναξω | 27 If I decide to stifle my complaining, change countenance, and wear a smiling face, |
σειομαι πασιν τοις μελεσιν οιδα γαρ οτι ουκ αθωον με εασεις | 28 fear seizes me at the thought of al my woes, for I know you do not regard me as innocent. |
επειδη δε ειμι ασεβης δια τι ουκ απεθανον | 29 And if I have done wrong, why should I put myself to useless trouble? |
εαν γαρ απολουσωμαι χιονι και αποκαθαρωμαι χερσιν καθαραις | 30 If I wash myself in melted snow, clean my hands with soda, |
ικανως εν ρυπω με εβαψας εβδελυξατο δε με η στολη | 31 you wil only plunge me into the dung, til my clothes themselves recoil from me! |
ου γαρ ει ανθρωπος κατ' εμε ω αντικρινουμαι ινα ελθωμεν ομοθυμαδον εις κρισιν | 32 For he is not human like me: impossible for me to answer him or appear alongside him in court. |
ειθε ην ο μεσιτης ημων και ελεγχων και διακουων ανα μεσον αμφοτερων | 33 There is no arbiter between us, to lay his hand on both, |
απαλλαξατω απ' εμου την ραβδον ο δε φοβος αυτου μη με στροβειτω | 34 to stay his rod from me, or keep away his daunting terrors. |
και ου μη φοβηθω αλλα λαλησω ου γαρ ουτω συνεπισταμαι | 35 Nonetheless, unafraid of him, I shal speak: since I do not see myself like that at al ! |
