1 Now I Paul myself beseech you by the meekness and gentleness of Christ, who in presence am base among you, but being absent am bold toward you:	1 C’est moi, Paul, qui vous supplie au nom de la bonté et l’esprit de compréhension du Christ, moi si humble au milieu de vous, et autoritaire, dit-on, quand je suis loin.
2 But I beseech you, that I may not be bold when I am present with that confidence, wherewith I think to be bold against some, which think of us as if we walked according to the flesh.	2 Que je n’aie pas à faire preuve d’autorité quand je serai là, comme je compte faire et comme j’oserai faire avec quelques-uns qui croient que nous agissons de façon tout humaine.
3 For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war after the flesh:	3 Humaine est notre condition, mais non la façon de combattre.
4 (For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds;)	4 Nos armes pour ce combat ne sont pas humaines: elles ont la force de Dieu pour détruire les forteresses - tous ces raisonnements
5 Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ;	5 et cet orgueil qui se dressent contre la connaissance de Dieu. Elles désarment les prétentions de l’esprit et les font obéir au Christ,
6 And having in a readiness to revenge all disobedience, when your obedience is fulfilled.	6 et nous sommes disposés à condamner toute rébellion dès que votre obéissance sera assurée.
7 Do ye look on things after the outward appearance? If any man trust to himself that he is Christ's, let him of himself think this again, that, as he is Christ's, even so are we Christ's.	7 Regardez les choses en face. Si quelqu’un croit appartenir au Christ, qu’il pense que nous sommes au Christ tout comme lui.
8 For though I should boast somewhat more of our authority, which the Lord hath given us for edification, and not for your destruction, I should not be ashamed:	8 Et même si je rappelle un peu trop mon autorité, que le Seigneur m’a donnée pour construire et non pour détruire, je n’aurai pas à m’en repentir.
9 That I may not seem as if I would terrify you by letters.	9 Vraiment, je ne serais capable que de vous écrire pour vous effrayer?
10 For his letters, say they, are weighty and powerful; but his bodily presence is weak, and his speech contemptible.	10 Certains disent: “Ses lettres sont dures et sévères, mais quand il est ici, il n’a pas de présence et ce n’est pas un orateur.”
11 Let such an one think this, that, such as we are in word by letters when we are absent, such will we be also in deed when we are present.	11 Que ces gens-là sachent que ce que j’écris de loin, je le ferai quand je serai là.
12 For we dare not make ourselves of the number, or compare ourselves with some that commend themselves: but they measuring themselves by themselves, and comparing themselves among themselves, are not wise.	12 Vraiment, je n’oserais pas me regarder ni me comparer avec ces gens qui se mettent si bien en valeur. Le malheur, c’est qu’ils se prennent toujours pour modèle et se comparent à leur propre image.
13 But we will not boast of things without our measure, but according to the measure of the rule which God hath distributed to us, a measure to reach even unto you.	13 Mais nous, quand nous rappelons notre autorité, nous n’exagérons pas parce que nous prenons pour référence celle-là même que le Seigneur nous a donnée en nous faisant arriver jusque chez vous.
14 For we stretch not ourselves beyond our measure, as though we reached not unto you: for we are come as far as to you also in preaching the gospel of Christ:	14 Nous ne sommes pas de ceux qui n’ont pas su arriver! Nous intervenons chez vous parce que c’est nous qui sommes allés vous chercher avec l’Évangile du Christ.
15 Not boasting of things without our measure, that is, of other men's labours; but having hope, when your faith is increased, that we shall be enlarged by you according to our rule abundantly,	15 Nous n’arrivons pas avec des prétentions excessives là où d’autres ont fait le travail, et quand votre foi aura grandi, nous espérons bien grandir nous-mêmes grâce à vous selon notre propre règle.
16 To preach the gospel in the regions beyond you, and not to boast in another man's line of things made ready to our hand.	16 Je veux dire que nous irons évangéliser plus loin que chez vous au lieu de faire les malins là où tout est déjà préparé, ce qui est la règle des autres.
17 But he that glorieth, let him glory in the Lord.	17 Celui qui veut faire le fier, qu’il mette sa fierté dans le Seigneur.
18 For not he that commendeth himself is approved, but whom the Lord commendeth.	18 Car celui qui vaut, ce n’est pas celui qui se recommande lui-même, mais celui que le Seigneur recommande.
