KING JAMES BIBLENEW JERUSALEM
Now upon the first day of the week, very early in the morning, they came unto the sepulchre, bringing the spices which they had prepared, and certain others with them.1 On the first day of the week, at the first sign of dawn, they went to the tomb with the spices they hadprepared.
And they found the stone rolled away from the sepulchre.2 They found that the stone had been rol ed away from the tomb,
And they entered in, and found not the body of the Lord Jesus.3 but on entering they could not find the body of the Lord Jesus.
And it came to pass, as they were much perplexed thereabout, behold, two men stood by them in shining garments:4 As they stood there puzzled about this, two men in bril iant clothes suddenly appeared at their side.
And as they were afraid, and bowed down their faces to the earth, they said unto them, Why seek ye the living among the dead?5 Terrified, the women bowed their heads to the ground. But the two said to them, 'Why look among thedead for someone who is alive?
He is not here, but is risen: remember how he spake unto you when he was yet in Galilee,6 He is not here; he has risen. Remember what he told you when he was still in Galilee:
Saying, The Son of man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men, and be crucified, and the third day rise again.7 that the Son of man was destined to be handed over into the power of sinful men and be crucified, andrise again on the third day.'
And they remembered his words,8 And they remembered his words.
And returned from the sepulchre, and told all these things unto the eleven, and to all the rest.9 And they returned from the tomb and told al this to the Eleven and to al the others.
It was Mary Magdalene, and Joanna, and Mary the mother of James, and other women that were with them, which told these things unto the apostles.10 The women were Mary of Magdala, Joanna, and Mary the mother of James. And the other womenwith them also told the apostles,
And their words seemed to them as idle tales, and they believed them not.11 but this story of theirs seemed pure nonsense, and they did not believe them.
Then arose Peter, and ran unto the sepulchre; and stooping down, he beheld the linen clothes laid by themselves, and departed, wondering in himself at that which was come to pass.12 Peter, however, went off to the tomb, running. He bent down and looked in and saw the linen clothsbut nothing else; he then went back home, amazed at what had happened.
And, behold, two of them went that same day to a village called Emmaus, which was from Jerusalem about threescore furlongs.13 Now that very same day, two of them were on their way to a vil age cal ed Emmaus, seven miles fromJerusalem,
And they talked together of all these things which had happened.14 and they were talking together about al that had happened.
And it came to pass, that, while they communed together and reasoned, Jesus himself drew near, and went with them.15 And it happened that as they were talking together and discussing it, Jesus himself came up andwalked by their side;
But their eyes were holden that they should not know him.16 but their eyes were prevented from recognising him.
And he said unto them, What manner of communications are these that ye have one to another, as ye walk, and are sad?17 He said to them, 'What are all these things that you are discussing as you walk along?' They stopped,their faces downcast.
And the one of them, whose name was Cleopas, answering said unto him, Art thou only a stranger in Jerusalem, and hast not known the things which are come to pass therein these days?18 Then one of them, called Cleopas, answered him, 'You must be the only person staying in Jerusalemwho does not know the things that have been happening there these last few days.'
And he said unto them, What things? And they said unto him, Concerning Jesus of Nazareth, which was a prophet mighty in deed and word before God and all the people:19 He asked, 'What things?' They answered, 'Al about Jesus of Nazareth, who showed himself aprophet powerful in action and speech before God and the whole people;
And how the chief priests and our rulers delivered him to be condemned to death, and have crucified him.20 and how our chief priests and our leaders handed him over to be sentenced to death, and had himcrucified.
But we trusted that it had been he which should have redeemed Israel: and beside all this, to day is the third day since these things were done.21 Our own hope had been that he would be the one to set Israel free. And this is not al : two whole dayshave now gone by since it al happened;
Yea, and certain women also of our company made us astonished, which were early at the sepulchre;22 and some women from our group have astounded us: they went to the tomb in the early morning,
And when they found not his body, they came, saying, that they had also seen a vision of angels, which said that he was alive.23 and when they could not find the body, they came back to tel us they had seen a vision of angelswho declared he was alive.
And certain of them which were with us went to the sepulchre, and found it even so as the women had said: but him they saw not.24 Some of our friends went to the tomb and found everything exactly as the women had reported, but ofhim they saw nothing.'
Then he said unto them, O fools, and slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken:25 Then he said to them, 'You foolish men! So slow to believe al that the prophets have said!
Ought not Christ to have suffered these things, and to enter into his glory?26 Was it not necessary that the Christ should suffer before entering into his glory?'
And beginning at Moses and all the prophets, he expounded unto them in all the scriptures the things concerning himself.27 Then, starting with Moses and going through al the prophets, he explained to them the passagesthroughout the scriptures that were about himself.
And they drew nigh unto the village, whither they went: and he made as though he would have gone further.28 When they drew near to the vil age to which they were going, he made as if to go on;
But they constrained him, saying, Abide with us: for it is toward evening, and the day is far spent. And he went in to tarry with them.29 but they pressed him to stay with them saying, 'It is nearly evening, and the day is almost over.' So hewent in to stay with them.
And it came to pass, as he sat at meat with them, he took bread, and blessed it, and brake, and gave to them.30 Now while he was with them at table, he took the bread and said the blessing; then he broke it andhanded it to them.
And their eyes were opened, and they knew him; and he vanished out of their sight.31 And their eyes were opened and they recognised him; but he had vanished from their sight.
And they said one to another, Did not our heart burn within us, while he talked with us by the way, and while he opened to us the scriptures?32 Then they said to each other, 'Did not our hearts burn within us as he talked to us on the road andexplained the scriptures to us?'
And they rose up the same hour, and returned to Jerusalem, and found the eleven gathered together, and them that were with them,33 They set out that instant and returned to Jerusalem. There they found the Eleven assembled togetherwith their companions,
Saying, The Lord is risen indeed, and hath appeared to Simon.34 who said to them, 'The Lord has indeed risen and has appeared to Simon.'
And they told what things were done in the way, and how he was known of them in breaking of bread.35 Then they told their story of what had happened on the road and how they had recognised him at thebreaking of bread.
And as they thus spake, Jesus himself stood in the midst of them, and saith unto them, Peace be unto you.36 They were still talking about al this when he himself stood among them and said to them, 'Peace bewith you!'
But they were terrified and affrighted, and supposed that they had seen a spirit.37 In a state of alarm and fright, they thought they were seeing a ghost.
And he said unto them, Why are ye troubled? and why do thoughts arise in your hearts?38 But he said, 'Why are you so agitated, and why are these doubts stirring in your hearts?
Behold my hands and my feet, that it is I myself: handle me, and see; for a spirit hath not flesh and bones, as ye see me have.39 See by my hands and my feet that it is I myself. Touch me and see for yourselves; a ghost has noflesh and bones as you can see I have.'
And when he had thus spoken, he shewed them his hands and his feet.40 And as he said this he showed them his hands and his feet.
And while they yet believed not for joy, and wondered, he said unto them, Have ye here any meat?41 Their joy was so great that they stil could not believe it, as they were dumbfounded; so he said tothem, 'Have you anything here to eat?'
And they gave him a piece of a broiled fish, and of an honeycomb.42 And they offered him a piece of gril ed fish,
And he took it, and did eat before them.43 which he took and ate before their eyes.
And he said unto them, These are the words which I spake unto you, while I was yet with you, that all things must be fulfilled, which were written in the law of Moses, and in the prophets, and in the psalms, concerning me.44 Then he told them, 'This is what I meant when I said, while I was stil with you, that everything writtenabout me in the Law of Moses, in the Prophets and in the Psalms, was destined to be fulfilled.'
Then opened he their understanding, that they might understand the scriptures,45 He then opened their minds to understand the scriptures,
And said unto them, Thus it is written, and thus it behoved Christ to suffer, and to rise from the dead the third day:46 and he said to them, 'So it is written that the Christ would suffer and on the third day rise from thedead,
And that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in his name among all nations, beginning at Jerusalem.47 and that, in his name, repentance for the forgiveness of sins would be preached to al nations,beginning from Jerusalem.
And ye are witnesses of these things.48 You are witnesses to this.
And, behold, I send the promise of my Father upon you: but tarry ye in the city of Jerusalem, until ye be endued with power from on high.49 'And now I am sending upon you what the Father has promised. Stay in the city, then, until you areclothed with the power from on high.'
And he led them out as far as to Bethany, and he lifted up his hands, and blessed them.50 Then he took them out as far as the outskirts of Bethany, and raising his hands he blessed them.
And it came to pass, while he blessed them, he was parted from them, and carried up into heaven.51 Now as he blessed them, he withdrew from them and was carried up to heaven.
And they worshipped him, and returned to Jerusalem with great joy:52 They worshipped him and then went back to Jerusalem ful of joy;
And were continually in the temple, praising and blessing God. Amen.53 and they were continually in the Temple praising God.
