Sirach 19

1 A labouring man that A is given to drunkenness shall not be rich: and he that contemneth small things shall fall by little and little.	1 Un operaio ubriacone non arricchirà, chi disprezza le piccole cose cadrà a poco a poco.
2 Wine and women will make men of understanding to fall away: and he that cleaveth to harlots will become impudent.	2 Vino e donne fanno deviare anche i saggi, ancora più temerario è chi frequenta prostitute.
3 Moths and worms shall have him to heritage, and a bold man shall be taken away.	3 Putredine e vermi saranno la sua sorte, chi è temerario sarà eliminato.
4 He that is hasty to give credit is lightminded; and he that sinneth shall offend against his own soul.	4 Chi si fida troppo presto, è di animo leggero, chi pecca, danneggia se stesso.
5 Whoso taketh pleasure in wickedness shall be condemned: but he that resisteth pleasures crowneth his life.	5 Chi si compiace del male, sarà condannato; chi resiste ai piaceri, corona la propria vita.
6 He that can rule his tongue shall live without strife; and he that hateth babbling shall have less evil.	6 Chi domina la lingua, vivrà senza liti; chi odia la loquacità, riduce i guai.
7 Rehearse not unto another that which is told unto thee, and thou shalt fare never the worse.	7 Non ripetere mai la parola udita e non ne avrai alcun danno.
8 Whether it be to friend or foe, talk not of other men's lives; and if thou canst without offence, reveal them not.	8 Non parlare né riguardo all’amico né riguardo al nemico, e se puoi farlo senza colpa, non svelare nulla,
9 For he heard and observed thee, and when time cometh he will hate thee.	9 poiché chi ti ascolta si guarderà da te e all’occasione ti detesterà.
10 If thou hast heard a word, let it die with thee; and be bold, it will not burst thee.	10 Hai udito una parola? Muoia con te! Sta’ sicuro, non ti farà scoppiare.
11 A fool travaileth with a word, as a woman in labour of a child.	11 Per una parola va in doglie lo stolto, come la partoriente per un bambino.
12 As an arrow that sticketh in a man's thigh, so is a word within a fool's belly.	12 Una freccia conficcata nella coscia: tale una parola in seno allo stolto.
13 Admonish a friend, it may be he hath not done it: and if he have done it, that he do it no more.	13 Chiedi conto all’amico: forse non ha fatto nulla, e se ha fatto qualcosa, perché non continui più.
14 Admonish thy friend, it may be he hath not said it: and if he have, that he speak it not again.	14 Chiedi conto al prossimo: forse non ha detto nulla, e se ha detto qualcosa, perché non lo ripeta.
15 Admonish a friend: for many times it is a slander, and believe not every tale.	15 Chiedi conto all’amico, perché spesso si tratta di calunnia; non credere a ogni parola.
16 There is one that slippeth in his speech, but not from his heart; and who is he that hath not offended with his tongue?	16 C’è chi scivola, ma non di proposito; e chi non ha peccato con la sua lingua?
17 Admonish thy neighbour before thou threaten him; and not being angry, give place to the law of the most High.	17 Chiedi conto al tuo prossimo, prima di minacciarlo; da’ corso alla legge dell’Altissimo.
18 The fear of the Lord is the first step to be accepted [of him,] and wisdom obtaineth his love.	18 Il timore del Signore è il principio dell’accoglienza, la sapienza procura l’amore presso di lui.
19 The knowledge of the commandments of the Lord is the doctrine of life: and they that do things that please him shall receive the fruit of the tree of immortality.	19 La conoscenza dei comandamenti del Signore è educazione alla vita, chi fa ciò che gli è gradito raccoglie i frutti dell’albero dell’immortalità.
20 The fear of the Lord is all wisdom; and in all wisdom is the performance of the law, and the knowledge of his omnipotency.	20 Ogni sapienza è timore del Signore e in ogni sapienza c’è la pratica della legge e la conoscenza della sua onnipotenza.
21 If a servant say to his master, I will not do as it pleaseth thee; though afterward he do it, he angereth him that nourisheth him.	21 Il servo che dice al padrone: «Non farò ciò che ti piace», anche se dopo lo fa, irrita colui che gli dà da mangiare.
22 The knowledge of wickedness is not wisdom, neither at any time the counsel of sinners prudence.	22 Non c’è sapienza nella conoscenza del male, non è mai prudenza il consiglio dei peccatori.
23 There is a wickedness, and the same an abomination; and there is a fool wanting in wisdom.	23 C’è un’astuzia che è abominevole, c’è uno stolto cui manca la saggezza.
24 He that hath small understanding, and feareth God, is better than one that hath much wisdom, and transgresseth the law of the most High.	24 Meglio uno di scarsa intelligenza ma timorato, che uno molto intelligente ma trasgressore della legge.
25 There is an exquisite subtilty, and the same is unjust; and there is one that turneth aside to make judgment appear; and there is a wise man that justifieth in judgment.	25 C’è un’astuzia fatta di cavilli, ma ingiusta, c’è chi intriga per prevalere in tribunale, ma il saggio è giusto quando giudica.
26 There is a wicked man that hangeth down his head sadly; but inwardly he is full of deceit,	26 C’è il malvagio curvo nella sua tristezza, ma il suo intimo è pieno d’inganno;
27 Casting down his countenance, and making as if he heard not: where he is not known, he will do thee a mischief before thou be aware.	27 abbassa il volto e finge di essere sordo, ma, quando non è osservato, avrà il sopravvento su di te.
28 And if for want of power he be hindered from sinning, yet when he findeth opportunity he will do evil.	28 E se per mancanza di forza gli è impedito di peccare, all’occasione propizia farà del male.
29 A man may be known by his look, and one that hath understanding by his countenance, when thou meetest him.	29 Dall’aspetto si conosce l’uomo e chi è assennato da come si presenta.
30 A man's attire, and excessive laughter, and gait, shew what he is.	30 Il vestito di un uomo, la bocca sorridente e la sua andatura rivelano quello che è.
