1 In the hundred and one and fiftieth year Demetrius the son of Seleucus departed from Rome, and came up with a few men unto a city of the sea coast, and reigned there.	1 En l’an 151, Démétrius, fils de Séleucus, quitta Rome et débarqua avec quelques hommes dans un port d’où il commença à régner.
2 And as he entered into the palace of his ancestors, so it was, that his forces had taken Antiochus and Lysias, to bring them unto him.	2 En le voyant rentrer au royaume de ses ancêtres, l’armée s’empara d’Antiocus et de Lysias pour les lui amener.
3 Wherefore, when he knew it, he said, Let me not see their faces.	3 Lorsqu’il apprit la chose, il déclara: “Ne me faites pas voir leur visage.”
4 So his host slew them. Now when Demetrius was set upon the throne of his kingdom,	4 Aussitôt l’armée les exécuta et Démétrius s’assit sur son trône.
5 There came unto him all the wicked and ungodly men of Israel, having Alcimus, who was desirous to be high priest, for their captain:	5 Tous les hommes d’Israël qui n’avaient ni foi ni loi vinrent le trouver; Alkime, qui rêvait d’être grand prêtre, les conduisait.
6 And they accused the people to the king, saying, Judas and his brethren have slain all thy friends, and driven us out of our own land.	6 Devant le roi ils accusèrent leur peuple en disant: “Judas et ses frères ont tué tous tes amis et ils nous ont chassé de notre pays.
7 Now therefore send some man whom thou trustest, and let him go and see what havock he hath made among us, and in the king's land, and let him punish them with all them that aid them.	7 Envoie donc maintenant un homme en qui tu as confiance: qu’il aille voir tout le tort que Judas nous a fait, à nous et aux territoires du roi, et qu’il punisse ces gens-là avec tous ceux qui les aident.”
8 Then the king chose Bacchides, a friend of the king, who ruled beyond the flood, and was a great man in the kingdom, and faithful to the king,	8 Le roi choisit Bakidès. C’était un de ses amis, un grand personnage et un fidèle du roi: il était gouverneur de la province au-delà de l’Euphrate.
9 And him he sent with that wicked Alcimus, whom he made high priest, and commanded that he should take vengeance of the children of Israel.	9 Le roi l’envoya avec Alkime, cet homme impie qu’il nomma grand prêtre, et il lui donna l’ordre de réprimer les Israélites.
10 So they departed, and came with a great power into the land of Judea, where they sent messengers to Judas and his brethren with peaceable words deceitfully.	10 Ils se mirent donc en route et arrivèrent au pays de Juda avec une armée nombreuse. Ils envoyèrent à Judas et à ses frères des messagers avec de bonnes paroles, mais c’était un mensonge.
11 But they gave no heed to their words; for they saw that they were come with a great power.	11 Ceux-ci ne les crurent pas: ils voyaient bien que les autres étaient venus avec une puissante armée.
12 Then did there assemble unto Alcimus and Bacchides a company of scribes, to require justice.	12 Cependant il y eut une réunion de maîtres de la Loi avec Alkime et Bakidès pour chercher une solution juste.
13 Now the Assideans were the first among the children of Israel that sought peace of them:	13 Les Assidéens étaient les premiers parmi les Israélites à demander la paix,
14 For said they, One that is a priest of the seed of Aaron is come with this army, and he will do us no wrong.	14 et ils se disaient: “Un prêtre de la race d’Aaron est venu avec cette armée, il ne nous fera pas de mal.”
15 So he spake unto them, peaceably, and sware unto them, saying, we will procure the harm neither of you nor your friends.	15 Il leur donna des paroles de paix et même il leur jura: “Nous ne voulons pas vous faire de mal, pas plus qu’à vos amis.”
16 Whereupon they believed him: howbeit he took of them threescore men, and slew them in one day, according to the words which he wrote,	16 Ils le crurent, mais lui fit arrêter et mettre à mort 60 d’entre eux en un seul jour selon la parole de l’Écriture:
17 The flesh of thy saints have they cast out, and their blood have they shed round about Jerusalem, and there was none to bury them.	17 Ils ont laissé à terre les corps de tes fidèles et répandu leur sang autour de Jérusalem, et personne ne leur a donné la sépulture.
18 Wherefore the fear and dread of them fell upon all the people, who said, There is neither truth nor righteousness in them; for they have broken the covenant and oath that they made.	18 Alors tout le peuple fut pris de crainte et de peur, on disait: “Ils n’ont pas de parole, aucun sens de la justice, car ils ont violé leur accord et le serment qu’ils avaient fait.”
19 After this, removed Bacchides from Jerusalem, and pitched his tents in Bezeth, where he sent and took many of the men that had forsaken him, and certain of the people also, and when he had slain them, he cast them into the great pit.	19 Bakidès quitta Jérusalem et vint camper à Beth-Zeth; de là il envoya arrêter un certain nombre de personnes importantes qui étaient passées de son côté, et avec eux quelques-uns du peuple; il les fit égorger et jeter dans un grand puits.
20 Then committed he the country to Alcimus, and left with him a power to aid him: so Bacchides went to the king.	20 Bakidès confia ensuite la province à Alkime, lui laissant des troupes pour l’épauler, après quoi il retourna près du roi.
21 But Alcimus contended for the high priesthood.	21 Alkime chercha à s’imposer comme grand prêtre,
22 And unto him resorted all such as troubled the people, who, after they had gotten the land of Juda into their power, did much hurt in Israel.	22 et tous ceux qui mettaient la pagaille dans le pays se groupèrent autour de lui. Ils se rendirent maîtres du pays de Juda et firent beaucoup de mal en Israël.
23 Now when Judas saw all the mischief that Alcimus and his company had done among the Israelites, even above the heathen,	23 Judas vit qu’Alkime et ses partisans faisaient encore plus de tort aux Israélites que les païens.
24 He went out into all the coasts of Judea round about, and took vengeance of them that had revolted from him, so that they durst no more go forth into the country.	24 Aussi se mit-il à parcourir toute la Judée pour tirer vengeance de ceux qui étaient passés à l’ennemi et les empêcher de circuler dans le pays.
25 On the other side, when Alcimus saw that Judas and his company had gotten the upper hand, and knew that he was not able to abide their force, he went again to the king, and said all the worst of them that he could.	25 Alkime s’aperçut que Judas et ses partisans allaient se renforçant: il comprit qu’il ne pourrait leur résister. Il retourna donc chez le roi et les accusa des pires crimes.
26 Then the king sent Nicanor, one of his honourable princes, a man that bare deadly hate unto Israel, with commandment to destroy the people.	26 Le roi aussitôt envoya Nicanor, un de ses plus illustres généraux, qui de plus n’avait que de la haine et du mépris pour Israël. Il lui ordonna d’exterminer le peuple.
27 So Nicanor came to Jerusalem with a great force; and sent unto Judas and his brethren deceitfully with friendly words, saying,	27 Nicanor arriva donc à Jérusalem avec une nombreuse armée. Il fit porter à Judas et à ses frères de bonnes paroles:
28 Let there be no battle between me and you; I will come with a few men, that I may see you in peace.	28 “Ne nous faisons pas la guerre, je viendrai à votre rencontre dans un esprit de paix avec une petite escorte.” Ce n’était qu’une ruse.
29 He came therefore to Judas, and they saluted one another peaceably. Howbeit the enemies were prepared to take away Judas by violence.	29 Il arriva donc chez Judas et ils se saluèrent l’un et l’autre pacifiquement, mais les ennemis étaient prêts à enlever Judas.
30 Which thing after it was known to Judas, to wit, that he came unto him with deceit, he was sore afraid of him, and would see his face no more.	30 Judas se rendit compte que Nicanor était venu chez lui avec de mauvaises intentions, il se méfia de lui et refusa de le recevoir de nouveau.
31 Nicanor also, when he saw that his counsel was discovered, went out to fight against Judas beside Capharsalama:	31 Voyant que son projet était découvert, Nicanor s’avança pour livrer combat à Judas près de Cafarsalama.
32 Where there were slain of Nicanor's side about five thousand men, and the rest fled into the city of David.	32 Nicanor perdit 500 hommes et les autres se réfugièrent dans la cité de David.
33 After this went Nicanor up to mount Sion, and there came out of the sanctuary certain of the priests and certain of the elders of the people, to salute him peaceably, and to shew him the burnt sacrifice that was offered for the king.	33 À la suite de cela, Nicanor monta au mont Sion; des prêtres sortirent du Lieu Saint avec les anciens du peuple, pour le saluer pacifiquement et lui montrer l’holocauste que l’on offrait pour le roi.
34 But he mocked them, and laughed at them, and abused them shamefully, and spake proudly,	34 Mais Nicanor se moqua d’eux, il les tourna en ridicule, il les méprisa en multipliant les insultes.
35 And sware in his wrath, saying, Unless Judas and his host be now delivered into my hands, if ever I come again in safety, I will burn up this house: and with that he went out in a great rage.	35 Au comble de la colère, il fit ce serment: “Si Judas cette fois-ci n’est pas livré entre mes mains avec son armée, je brûlerai ce Temple lorsque je reviendrai vainqueur.” Il partit très en colère.
36 Then the priests entered in, and stood before the altar and the temple, weeping, and saying,	36 Les prêtres en le quittant allèrent se tenir devant l’autel. Devant le Temple ils se mirent à pleurer:
37 Thou, O Lord, didst choose this house to be called by thy name, and to be a house of prayer and petition for thy people:	37 “C’est toi qui as choisi cette maison pour qu’elle porte ton Nom, pour qu’elle soit pour ton peuple une maison de prière et de supplication.
38 Be avenged of this man and his host, and let them fall by the sword: remember their blasphemies, and suffer them not to continue any longer.	38 Venge-toi sur cet homme et sur son armée, qu’il tombe sous l’épée. Souviens-toi de leurs insultes et ne leur accorde pas de pitié.”
39 So Nicanor went out of Jerusalem, and pitched his tents in Bethhoron, where an host out of Syria met him.	39 Nicanor sortit donc de Jérusalem. Il installa son camp à Beth-Horon, et l’armée de Syrie vint l’y rejoindre.
40 But Judas pitched in Adasa with three thousand men, and there he prayed, saying,	40 Judas, de son côté, campa à Adasa avec 3 000 hommes. Il fit cette prière:
41 O Lord, when they that were sent from the king of the Assyrians blasphemed, thine angel went out, and smote an hundred fourscore and five thousand of them.	41 “Lorsque les messagers du roi ont blasphémé, ton ange est sorti et en a frappé 185 000.
42 Even so destroy thou this host before us this day, that the rest may know that he hath spoken blasphemously against thy sanctuary, and judge thou him according to his wickedness.	42 De même aujourd’hui écrase devant nous cette armée, et tous sauront que ses insultes contre ton Sanctuaire lui ont porté malheur. Juge-le selon sa méchanceté.”
43 So the thirteenth day of the month Adar the hosts joined battle: but Nicanor's host was discomfited, and he himself was first slain in the battle.	43 Les armées engagèrent la bataille le 13 du mois d’Adar; l’armée de Nicanor fut écrasée et lui-même tomba l’un des premiers dans la bataille.
44 Now when Nicanor's host saw that he was slain, they cast away their weapons, and fled.	44 Lorsque les soldats de Nicanor virent qu’il était tombé, ils jetèrent leurs armes et prirent la fuite.
45 Then they pursued after them a day's journey, from Adasa unto Gazera, sounding an alarm after them with their trumpets.	45 Les Juifs les poursuivirent toute la journée, depuis Adasa jusqu’aux abords de Gazer, et tout en les poursuivant, ils sonnaient de la trompette de toutes leurs forces.
46 Whereupon they came forth out of all the towns of Judea round about, and closed them in; so that they, turning back upon them that pursued them, were all slain with the sword, and not one of them was left.	46 De tous les villages de Judée on sortait pour encercler les fuyards et on les obligeait à s’arrêter pour se défendre; ainsi tous tombèrent par l’épée et pas un seul n’échappa.
47 Afterwards they took the spoils, and the prey, and smote off Nicanors head, and his right hand, which he stretched out so proudly, and brought them away, and hanged them up toward Jerusalem.	47 On ramassa leurs dépouilles et tout ce qu’on trouva; on coupa la tête de Nicanor et la main droite qu’il avait levée dans son insolence, et on les apporta à Jérusalem où elles furent exposées.
48 For this cause the people rejoiced greatly, and they kept that day a day of great gladness.	48 Le peuple était dans la joie et ce jour-là on fit une grande fête;
49 Moreover they ordained to keep yearly this day, being the thirteenth of Adar.	49 on décida que ce jour serait célébré chaque année, le 13 du mois d’Adar.
50 Thus the land of Juda was in rest a little while.	50 Après cela le pays de Juda eut la paix pour quelque temps.
