1 Now when Simon heard that Tryphon had gathered together a great host to invade the land of Judea, and destroy it,	1 Seppe adunque Simone quello che Trifone avea fatto, ch' egli avea radunata grande oste, per venire in Giudea a distruggerla.
2 And saw that the people was in great trembling and fear, he went up to Jerusalem, and gathered the people together,	2 E veggendo che il popolo era ispaventato, sì se ne venne in Ierusalem, e radunò il popolo (a parlamento).
3 And gave them exhortation, saying, Ye yourselves know what great things I, and my brethren, and my father's house, have done for the laws and the sanctuary, the battles also and troubles which we have seen.	3 E confortandogli disse: voi sapete quante cose io e gli miei fratelli e il lignaggio di mio padre abbiamo fatto per mantenere le nostre leggi e gli nostri santi, e quante angosce abbiamo sostenute.
4 By reason whereof all my brethren are slain for Israel's sake, and I am left alone.	4 Per grazia di queste cose, e per difensione del nostro popolo, gli miei fratelli sono morti, e io solo sono rimaso, (e Ionata preso).
5 Now therefore be it far from me, that I should spare mine own life in any time of trouble: for I am no better than my brethren.	5 Adunque non piaccia a Dio (da poi che Ionata è preso), io perdoni alla vita mia in tutto il tempo delle avversitadi; imperciò ch' io non sono migliore degli miei fratelli.
6 Doubtless I will avenge my nation, and the sanctuary, and our wives, and our children: for all the heathen are gathered to destroy us of very malice.	6 E (sporrommi ad ogni pericolo, e) vendicherò la mia gente, e (difenderò) le nostre sante leggi, e le nostre donne e gli nostri figliuoli; imperciò che tutti gli nostri nimici sono radunati per uccidere noi.
7 Now as soon as the people heard these words, their spirit revived.	7 E quando il popolo udì questi sermoni, il loro spirito con lui insieme si raccese.
8 And they answered with a loud voice, saying, Thou shalt be our leader instead of Judas and Jonathan thy brother.	8 E rispuosono con grande voce, dicendo: tu se' il nostro duca in luogo di Giuda (Maccabeo) e di Ionata tuo fratello.
9 Fight thou our battles, and whatsoever, thou commandest us, that will we do.	9 Adunque combattiamo (e ordiniamo e facciamo) la nostra battaglia; e ciò che tu dirai, faremo.
10 So then he gathered together all the men of war, and made haste to finish the walls of Jerusalem, and he fortified it round about.	10 Allora Simone radunde tutti i buoni battaglieri, e affrettossi di compire tutte le mura di Ierusalem, e armolla intorno.
11 Also he sent Jonathan the son of Absolom, and with him a great power, to Joppa: who casting out them that were therein remained there in it.	11 E mandò uno principe, figliuolo di Assalomi, che avea Ionata, in Ioppen con oste nuova; e cacciò quegli che v' erano, ed egli vi rimase.
12 So Tryphon removed from Ptolemaus with a great power to invade the land of Judea, and Jonathan was with him in ward.	12 E Trifone si mosse di Tolemaida per venire nelle terre de' Giudei con molta gente; e menò Ionata, il quale teneva in prigione.
13 But Simon pitched his tents at Adida, over against the plain.	13 E Simone se ne venne [in Addus], e andava incontro alla faccia del campo (suo).
14 Now when Tryphon knew that Simon was risen up instead of his brother Jonathan, and meant to join battle with him, he sent messengers unto him, saying,	14 E quando Trifone seppe che Simone s'era levato in luogo di Ionata suo fratello, e che con lui gli convenìa combattere, mandò a lui ambasciatori,
15 Whereas we have Jonathan thy brother in hold, it is for money that he is owing unto the king's treasure, concerning the business that was committed unto him.	15 dicendo: sappi che noi teniamo preso Ionata tuo fratello, per argento ch' egli dovea dare nella ragione del re.
16 Wherefore now send an hundred talents of silver, and two of his sons for hostages, that when he is at liberty he may not revolt from us, and we will let him go.	16 E però (se tu vuoli ch' egli si parta da noi, e che noi il lasciamo) mandami C talenti d' argento, e i suoi due figliuoli per ostaggi, acciò che lasciandolo non si fugga da noi, e sì nel rimanderemo.
17 Hereupon Simon, albeit he perceived that they spake deceitfully unto him yet sent he the money and the children, lest peradventure he should procure to himself great hatred of the people:	17 Di che Simone (dubitava e) conobbe veramente che il suo parlare era di tradimento; ma pure consentì di mandargli l'argento e li fanciulli, acciò che il popolo non lo odiasse, dicendo:
18 Who might have said, Because I sent him not the money and the children, therefore is Jonathan dead.	18 Vedi che è lasciato morire, per [non] mandargli l'argento e li fanciulli.
19 So he sent them the children and the hundred talents: howbeit Tryphon dissembled neither would he let Jonathan go.	19 E per questa cagione gli mandò l'argento e li fanciulli; donde Trifone mentì, però che non rimandò Ionata, (ma si ritenne l'argento e li fanciulìi).
20 And after this came Tryphon to invade the land, and destroy it, going round about by the way that leadeth unto Adora: but Simon and his host marched against him in every place, wheresoever he went.	20 Poi Trifone venne nel paese per guastarlo; e aggirarono per la via onde si va ad Ador; e Simone colla sua oste gli si poneva presso in ogni luogo, dovunque loro andavano.
21 Now they that were in the tower sent messengers unto Tryphon, to the end that he should hasten his coming unto them by the wilderness, and send them victuals.	21 Ma quegli ch' erano nella ròcca mandarono ambasciadori a Trifone, ch' egli s'affrettasse e venisse per lo deserto, e mandasse loro vittuaglia.
22 Wherefore Tryphon made ready all his horsemen to come that night: but there fell a very great snow, by reason whereof he came not. So he departed, and came into the country of Galaad.	22 E acconciossi Trifone con tutta la cavalleria. per venire quella notte; ma egli era grande nevato, e non venne in Galaaditim.
23 And when he came near to Bascama he slew Jonathan, who was buried there.	23 Ma quando egli s'approssimò a Bascama, egli quivi uccise Ionata e li suoi figliuoli.
24 Afterward Tryphon returned and went into his own land.	24 E poi si partì Trifone, e tornossi in suo paese.
25 Then sent Simon, and took the bones of Jonathan his brother, and buried them in Modin, the city of his fathers.	25 Allora Simone mandò a ricogliere il corpo. di Ionata e de' suoi figliuoli, e seppelligli in Modin, città de' loro padri.
26 And all Israel made great lamentation for him, and bewailed him many days.	26 E tutto il popolo d' Israel lo piansono, e feciono grande lamento per molti giorni.
27 Simon also built a monument upon the sepulchre of his father and his brethren, and raised it aloft to the sight, with hewn stone behind and before.	27 E Simone edificò sopra la sepoltura del padre suo e de' suoi fratelli uno alto edificio, però che si vedesse dalla lunga, di pietra (lavorata e) pulita dinanzi e di dietro.
28 Moreover he set up seven pyramids, one against another, for his father, and his mother, and his four brethren.	28 E ordinovvi sette piramidi (e appuntate) le quali erano l' una contro all' altra; e una ne fece al padre, e una alla madre, e quattro a' fratelli, (e una per sè).
29 And in these he made cunning devices, about the which he set great pillars, and upon the pillars he made all their armour for a perpetual memory, and by the armour ships carved, that they might be seen of all that sail on the sea.	29 E intorno a queste piramidi puose grandi colonne, e sopra le colonne l'arme a perpetuale memoria; e a lato all' arme puose navi intagliate, le quali vedessono li naviganti per mare.
30 This is the sepulchre which he made at Modin, and it standeth yet unto this day.	30 E questo fue il monumento che fece (fare Simone Maccabeo) in Modin, e infino al dì d'oggi si pare.
31 Now Tryphon dealt deceitfully with the young king Antiochus, and slew him.	31 Ora avvenne che Trifone, camminando con Antioco re giovane, per tradimento l'uccise.
32 And he reigned in his stead, and crowned himself king of Asia, and brought a great calamity upon the land.	32 E regnò in suo luogo, e incoronossi [re] d' Asia; egli fu uomo che fece grande male in terra.
33 Then Simon built up the strong holds in Judea, and fenced them about with high towers, and great walls, and gates, and bars, and laid up victuals therein.	33 E (intanto) Simone afforzòe le tenute di Giudea, e puosevi fornimenti, e fecevi alte torri,
34 Moreover Simon chose men, and sent to king Demetrius, to the end he should give the land an immunity, because all that Tryphon did was to spoil.	34 E poi elesse Simone ambasciadori, e mandògli allo re Demetrio, che gli piacesse di dovere deliberare la contrada de' suoi debiti; imperciò che quello ch' era istato fatto, si era per lo arbitrio di Trifone.
35 Unto whom king Demetrius answered and wrote after this manner:	35 Allora Demetrio rispuose queste parole, scritte nella tale lettera mandata :
36 King Demetrius unto Simon the high priest, and friend of kings, as also unto the elders and nation of the Jews, sendeth greeting:	36 Lo re Demetrio a Simone, sommo sacerdote e amico del re, e a' più antichi di Giudea, e alla loro gente, salute.
37 The golden crown, and the scarlet robe, which ye sent unto us, we have received: and we are ready to make a stedfast peace with you, yea, and to write unto our officers, to confirm the immunities which we have granted.	37 Noi abbiamo ricevuto la corona dell' oro e il collare che ci mandaste, e siamo apparecchiati di fare con voi grande pace, e scrivere alli nostri ufficiali, che vi rimettano (e lascino) quelle cose che noi vi concedemmo.
38 And whatsoever covenants we have made with you shall stand; and the strong holds, which ye have builded, shall be your own.	38 E tutte quelle cose le quali concedemmo a voi, siano ferme; e le fortezze le quali avete edificate, siano vostre.
39 As for any oversight or fault committed unto this day, we forgive it, and the crown tax also, which ye owe us: and if there were any other tribute paid in Jerusalem, it shall no more be paid.	39 E ancora vi perdoniamo la ignoranza e li peccati insino al dì d' oggi; e la corona (dell' oro) la quale ci dovevate dare, rimettiamvi; e se alcuna altra cosa era tributaria in Ierusalem, già non sia più.
40 And look who are meet among you to be in our court, let then be enrolled, and let there be peace betwixt us.	40 E se per avventura alcuni di voi fossono acconci d'essere coscritti intra i nostri, siano coscritti; e sia intra noi pace.
41 Thus the yoke of the heathen was taken away from Israel in the hundred and seventieth year.	41 E nel CLXX anno (del regno de' Greci) sì fu levato il giogo de' pagani dal popolo d' Israel.
42 Then the people of Israel began to write in their instruments and contracts, In the first year of Simon the high priest, the governor and leader of the Jews.	42 E incominciarono a scrivere in tavole e scritte pubbliche, nel primo anno sotto Simone sommo sacerdote, grande duca e principe de' Giudei.
43 In those days Simon camped against Gaza and besieged it round about; he made also an engine of war, and set it by the city, and battered a certain tower, and took it.	43 In quel tempo (poco istante) Simone venne ad oste a Gaza, e attorniolla colla gente sua, e fece (edifici e) ingegni; e accostossi alla cittade (e combattella), e percosse una delle torri (della cittade), e fecela cadere.
44 And they that were in the engine leaped into the city; whereupon there was a great uproar in the city:	44 E quegli che ne uscirono erano (tra gli edificii nella cittade, cioè) in una (fortezza la quale si chiamava) macchina; donde per questo nacque grande paura nella terra.
45 Insomuch as the people of the city rent their clothes, and climbed upon the walls with their wives and children, and cried with a loud voice, beseeching Simon to grant them peace.	45 E montarono quegli dentro della cittade sopra le mura, colle donne loro e con gli figliuoli, e colle gonnelle loro stracciate (in segno di paura e di dolore), e gridarono ad alta voce, e domandarono a Simone pace e concordia.
46 And they said, Deal not with us according to our wickedness, but according to thy mercy.	46 E dissono: non ci trattare secondo le nostre malizie, ma secondo le tue misericordie, (e a te serviremo).
47 So Simon was appeased toward them, and fought no more against them, but put them out of the city, and cleansed the houses wherein the idols were, and so entered into it with songs and thanksgiving.	47 E Simone umiliandosi non li disertò; ma misegli fuori della terra, e purgò le magioni dove erano stati gl' idoli; e allora entrò dentro con laude, benedicendo Dio.
48 Yea, he put all uncleanness out of it, and placed such men there as would keep the law, and made it stronger than it was before, and built therein a dwellingplace for himself.	48 E gittandone fuori ogni bruttura, sì vi rimise uomini che osservassono la legge; e armò la terra, e fecevi abitazioni.
49 They also of the tower in Jerusalem were kept so strait, that they could neither come forth, nor go into the country, nor buy, nor sell: wherefore they were in great distress for want of victuals, and a great number of them perished through famine.	49 Ora egli era vietato alli paesani di non vendere e di non comperare con quegli della ròcca di Ierusalem, e di non lasciargli passare; donde cominciarono a sostenere grande fame, e molti ne morirono di fame.
50 Then cried they to Simon, beseeching him to be at one with them: which thing he granted them; and when he had put them out from thence, he cleansed the tower from pollutions:	50 E chiesono mercede a Simone; ed egli si adumiliò a loro; e lasciògli andare, e purgòe la ròcca di contaminazioni.
51 And entered into it the three and twentieth day of the second month in the hundred seventy and first year, with thanksgiving, and branches of palm trees, and with harps, and cymbals, and with viols, and hymns, and songs: because there was destroyed a great enemy out of Israel.	51 Ed entrovvi dentro a dì XXIII del secondo mese, nel CLXXI anno (del regno de' Greci), con laude e con rami di palma, e con cimbali e con citare, e con canti e inni; imperciò ch' era attritato il grande nimico d'Israel.
52 He ordained also that that day should be kept every year with gladness. Moreover the hill of the temple that was by the tower he made stronger than it was, and there he dwelt himself with his company.	52 E ordinòe che ogni anno questi dì si festeggiassono con letizia.
53 And when Simon saw that John his son was a valiant man, he made him captain of all the hosts; and he dwelt in Gazera.	53 E armòe il monte del tempio, il quale era a lato alla ròcca; e abitovvi egli, e quegli ch' erano con lui.
	54 E conobbe Simone, che il suo figliuolo Giovanni era uomo forte di guerra; e sì lo fece principe delle virtudi, cioè de' forti combattitori, (e di tutto il popolo); e abitòe a Gazara.
