Joshua 5

DOUAI-RHEIMS	JERUSALEM
1 Now when all the kings of the Amorrhites, who dwelt beyond the Jordan westward, and all the kings of Chanaan, who possessed the places near the great sea, had heard that the Lord had dried up the waters of the Jordan before the children of Israel, till they passed over, their heart failed them, and there remained no spirit in them, fearing the coming in of the children of Israel.	1 Lorsque tous les rois des Amorites qui habitaient au-delà du Jourdain, vers l'ouest, et tous les rois desCananéens qui habitaient face à la mer apprirent que Yahvé avait asséché les eaux du Jourdain devant lesIsraélites, jusqu'à ce qu'ils soient passés, le coeur leur manqua et ils perdirent courage devant les Israélites.
2 At that time the Lord said to Josue: Make thee knives of stone, and circumcise the second time the children of Israel.	2 En ce temps-là, Yahvé dit à Josué: "Fais-toi des couteaux de silex, et circoncis de nouveau lesIsraélites (une seconde fois").
3 He did what the Lord had commanded, and he circumcised the children of Israel in the hill of the foreskins.	3 Josué se fit des couteaux de silex et circoncit les Israélites sur le Tertre des Prépuces.
4 Now this is the cause of the second circumcision: All the people that came out of Egypt that were males, all the men fit for war, died in the desert, during the time of the long going about in the way.	4 Voici la raison pour laquelle Josué fit cette circoncision: toute la population mâle, sortie d'Egypte enâge de porter les armes, était morte dans le désert, en chemin, après leur sortie d'Egypte.
5 Now these were all circumcised. But the people that were born in the desert,	5 Or, tout ce peuple émigré avait été circoncis; mais tout le peuple né dans le désert, en chemin, aprèsleur sortie d'Egypte, on ne l'avait pas circoncis;
6 Luring the forty years of the journey in the wide wilderness, were uncircumcised: till all they were consumed that had not heard the voice of the Lord, and to whom he had sworn before, that he would not shew them the land flowing with milk and honey.	6 car pendant 40 ans les Israélites marchèrent dans le désert, jusqu'à ce que toute la nation eût péri, àsavoir les hommes sortis d'Egypte en âge de porter les armes; ils n'avaient pas obéi à la voix de Yahvé, et Yahvéleur avait juré de ne pas leur laisser voir la terre qu'il avait juré à leurs pères de nous donner, terre qui ruisselle delait et de miel.
7 The children of these succeeded in the place of their fathers, and were circumcised by Josue: for they were uncircumcised even as they were born, and no one had circumcised them in the way.	7 Quant à leurs fils, il les établit à leur place, et ce sont eux que Josué circoncit: ils étaient incirconcis,car on ne les avait pas circoncis en chemin.
8 Now after they were all circumcised, they remained in the same place of the camp, until they were healed.	8 Lorsqu'on eut achevé de circoncire toute la nation, ils restèrent sur place dans le camp jusqu'à leurguérison.
9 And the Lord said to Josue: This day have I taken away from you the reproach of Egypt. And the name of that place was called Galgal, until this present day.	9 Alors Yahvé dit à Josué: "Aujourd'hui j'ai ôté de dessus vous le déshonneur de l'Egypte." Aussi a-t-onappelé ce lieu du nom de Gilgal jusqu'aujourd'hui.
10 And the children of Israel abode in Galgal, and they kept the phase on the fourteenth day of the month, at evening, in the plains of Jericho:	10 Les Israélites campèrent à Gilgal et y firent la Pâque, le quatorzième jour du mois, le soir, dans laplaine de Jéricho.
11 And they ate on the next day unleavened bread of the corn of the land, and frumenty of the same year.	11 Le lendemain de la Pâque, ils mangèrent du produit du pays: pains sans levain et épis grillés, en cemême jour.
12 And the manna ceased after they ate of the corn of the land, neither did the children of Israel use that food any more, but they ate of the corn of the present year of the land of Chanaan.	12 Il n'y eut plus de manne le lendemain, où ils mangeaient du produit du pays. Les Israélites n'ayantplus de manne se nourrirent dès cette année des produits de la terre de Canaan.
13 And when Josue was in the field of the city of Jericho, he lifted up his eyes, and saw a man standing over against him: holding a drawn sword, and he went to him, and said: Art thou one of ours, or of our adversaries?	13 Or Josué, se trouvant près de Jéricho, leva les yeux et vit un homme qui se tenait debout devant lui,une épée nue à la main. Josué s'avança vers lui et lui dit: "Es-tu des nôtres ou de nos ennemis?"
14 And he answered: No: but I am prince of the host of the Lord, and now I am come.	14 Il répondit: "Non! Mais je suis le chef de l'armée de Yahvé, et maintenant je suis venu." Josué,tombant la face contre terre, l'adora et dit: "Que dit mon Seigneur à son serviteur?"
15 Josue fell on his face to the ground. And worshipping, add: What saith my lord to his servant?	15 Le chef de l'armée de Yahvé répondit à Josué: "Ote tes sandales de tes pieds, car le lieu sur lequel tute trouves est saint." Et Josué fit ainsi.
16 Loose, saith he, thy shoes from off thy feet: for the place whereon thou standest is holy. And Josue did as was commanded him.
