DOUAI-RHEIMSNOVA VULGATA
The same day Jesus going out of the house, sat by the sea side.1 In illo die exiens Iesus de domo sedebat secus mare;
And great multitudes were gathered unto him, so that he went up into a boat and sat: and all the multitude stood on the shore.2 et congregataesunt ad eum turbae multae, ita ut in naviculam ascendens sederet, et omnis turbastabat in litore.
And he spoke to them many things in parables, saying: Behold the sower went forth to sow.3 Et locutus est eis multa in parabolis dicens: “ Ecce exiit, qui seminat,seminare.
And whilst he soweth some fell by the way side, and the birds of the air came and ate them up.4 Et dum seminat, quaedam ceciderunt secus viam, et venerunt volucreset comederunt ea.
And other some fell upon stony ground, where they had not much earth: and they sprung up immediately, because they had no deepness of earth.5 Alia autem ceciderunt in petrosa, ubi non habebant terrammultam, et continuo exorta sunt, quia non habebant altitudinem terrae;
And when the sun was up they were scorched: and because they had not root, they withered away.6 soleautem orto, aestuaverunt et, quia non habebant radicem, aruerunt.
And others fell among thorns: and the thorns grew up and choked them.7 Alia autemceciderunt in spinas, et creverunt spinae et suffocaverunt ea.
And others fell upon good ground: and they brought forth fruit, some an hundredfold, some sixtyfold, and some thirtyfold.8 Alia veroceciderunt in terram bonam et dabant fructum: aliud centesimum, aliudsexagesimum, aliud tricesimum.
He that hath ears to hear, let him hear.9 Qui habet aures, audiat ”.
And his disciples came and said to him: Why speakest thou to them in parables?10 Et accedentesdiscipuli dixerunt ei: “ Quare in parabolis loqueris eis? ”.
Who answered and said to them: Because to you it is given to know the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven: but to them it is not given.11 Quirespondens ait illis: “ Quia vobis datum est nosse mysteria regni caelorum,illis autem non est datum.
For he that hath, to him shall be given, and he shall abound: but he that hath not, from him shall be taken away that also which he hath.12 Qui enim habet, dabitur ei, et abundabit; quiautem non habet, et quod habet, auferetur ab eo.
Therefore do I speak to them in parables: because seeing they see not, and hearing they hear not, neither do they understand.13 Ideo in parabolis loquoreis, quia videntes non vident et audientes non audiunt neque intellegunt;
And the prophecy of Isaias is fulfilled in them, who saith: By hearing you shall hear, and shall not understand: and seeing you shall see, and shall not perceive.14 etadimpletur eis prophetia Isaiae dicens:
"Auditu audietis et non intellegetis
et videntes videbitis et non videbitis.
For the heart of this people is grown gross, and with their ears they have been dull of hearing, and their eyes they have shut: lest at any time they should see with their eyes, and hear with their ears, and understand with their heart, and be converted, and I should heal them.15 Incrassatum est enim cor populi huius,
et auribus graviter audierunt
et oculos suos clauserunt,
ne quando oculis videant
et auribus audiant
et corde intellegant et convertantur,
et sanem eos".
But blessed are your eyes, because they see, and your ears, because they hear.16 Vestri autem beati oculi, quia vident, et aures vestrae, quia audiunt.
For, amen, I say to you, many prophets and just men have desired to see the things that you see, and have not seen them, and to hear the things that you hear and have not heard them.17 Amen quippe dico vobis: Multi prophetae et iusti cupierunt videre, quae videtis,et non viderunt, et audire, quae auditis, et non audierunt!
Hear you therefore the parable of the sower.18 Vos ergo audite parabolam seminantis.
When any one heareth the word of the kingdom, and understandeth it not, there cometh the wicked one, and catcheth away that which was sown in his heart: this is he that received the seed by the way side.19 Omnis, qui audit verbum regni et nonintellegit, venit Malus et rapit, quod seminatum est in corde eius; hic est, quisecus viam seminatus est.
And he that received the seed upon stony ground, is he that heareth the word, and immediately receiveth it with joy.20 Qui autem supra petrosa seminatus est, hic est, quiverbum audit et continuo cum gaudio accipit illud,
Yet hath he not root in himself, but is only for a time: and when there ariseth tribulation and persecution because of the word, he is presently scandalized.21 non habet autem in seradicem, sed est temporalis; facta autem tribulatione vel persecutione propterverbum, continuo scandalizatur.
And he that received the seed among thorns, is he that heareth the word, and the care of this world and the deceitfulness of riches choketh up the word, and he becometh fruitless.22 Qui autem est seminatus in spinis, hic est,qui verbum audit, et sollicitudo saeculi et fallacia divitiarum suffocat verbum,et sine fructu efficitur.
But he that received the seed upon good ground, is he that heareth the word, and understandeth, and beareth fruit, and yieldeth the one an hundredfold, and another sixty, and another thirty.23 Qui vero in terra bona seminatus est, hic est, quiaudit verbum et intellegit et fructum affert et facit aliud quidem centum, aliudautem sexaginta, porro aliud triginta ”.
Another parable he proposed to them, saying: The kingdom of heaven is likened to a man that sowed good seeds in his field.24 Aliam parabolam proposuit illis dicens: “ Simile factum est regnum caelorumhomini, qui seminavit bonum semen in agro suo.
But while men were asleep, his enemy came and oversowed cockle among the wheat and went his way.25 Cum autem dormirent homines,venit inimicus eius et superseminavit zizania in medio tritici et abiit.
And when the blade was sprung up, and had brought forth fruit, then appeared also the cockle.26 Cumautem crevisset herba et fructum fecisset, tunc apparuerunt et zizania.
And the servants of the goodman of the house coming said to him: Sir, didst thou not sow good seed in thy field? whence then hath it cockle?27 Accedentes autem servi patris familias dixerunt ei: “Domine, nonne bonum semenseminasti in agro tuo? Unde ergo habet zizania?”.
And he said to them: An enemy hath done this. And the servants said to him: Wilt thou that we go and gather it up?28 Et ait illis: “Inimicushomo hoc fecit”. Servi autem dicunt ei: “Vis, imus et colligimus ea?”.
And he said: No, lest perhaps gathering up the cockle, you root up the wheat also together with it.29 Et ait: “Non; ne forte colligentes zizania eradicetis simul cum eis triticum,
Suffer both to grow until the harvest, and in the time of the harvest I will say to the reapers: Gather up first the cockle, and bind it into bundles to burn, but the wheat gather ye into my barn.30 sinite utraque crescere usque ad messem. Et in tempore messis dicammessoribus: Colligite primum zizania et alligate ea in fasciculos ad comburendumea, triticum autem congregate in horreum meum” ”.
Another parable he proposed unto them, saying: The kingdom of heaven is like to a grain of mustard seed, which a man took and sowed in his field.31 Aliam parabolam proposuit eis dicens: “ Simile est regnum caelorum granosinapis, quod accipiens homo seminavit in agro suo.
Which is the least indeed of all seeds; but when it is grown up, it is greater than all herbs, and becometh a tree, so that the birds of the air come, and dwell in the branches thereof.32 Quod minimum quidem estomnibus seminibus; cum autem creverit, maius est holeribus et fit arbor, ita utvolucres caeli veniant et habitent in ramis eius ”.
Another parable he spoke to them: The kingdom of heaven is like to leaven, which a woman took and hid in three measures of meal, until the whole was leavened.33 Aliam parabolam locutus est eis: “ Simile est regnum caelorum fermento,quod acceptum mulier abscondit in farinae satis tribus, donec fermentatum esttotum ”.
All these things Jesus spoke in parables to the multitudes: and without parables he did not speak to them.34 Haec omnia locutus est Iesus in parabolis ad turbas; et sine parabola nihilloquebatur eis,
That it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet, saying: I will open my mouth in parables, I will utter things hidden from the foundation of the world.35 ut adimpleretur, quod dictum erat per prophetam dicentem:
“ Aperiam in parabolis os meum,
eructabo abscondita a constitutione mundi ”.
Then having sent away the multitudes, he came into the house, and his disciples came to him, saying: Expound to us the parable of the cockle of the field.36 Tunc, dimissis turbis, venit in domum, et accesserunt ad eum discipuli eiusdicentes: “ Dissere nobis parabolam zizaniorum agri ”.
Who made answer and said to them: He that soweth the good seed, is the Son of man.37 Qui respondensait: “ Qui seminat bonum semen, est Filius hominis;
And the field, is the world. And the good seed are the children of the kingdom. And the cockle, are the children of the wicked one.38 ager autem est mundus;bonum vero semen, hi sunt filii regni; zizania autem filii sunt Mali;
And the enemy that sowed them, is the devil. But the harvest is the end of the world. And the reapers are the angels.39 inimicus autem, qui seminavit ea, est Diabolus; messis vero consummatio saeculiest; messores autem angeli sunt.
Even as cockle therefore is gathered up, and burnt with fire: so shall it be at the end of the world.40 Sicut ergo colliguntur zizania et ignicomburuntur, sic erit in consummatione saeculi:
The Son of man shall send his angels, and they shall gather out of his kingdom all scandals, and them that work iniquity.41 mittet Filius hominis angelossuos, et colligent de regno eius omnia scandala et eos, qui faciunt iniquitatem,
And shall cast them into the furnace of fire: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.42 et mittent eos in caminum ignis; ibi erit fletus et stridor dentium.
Then shall the just shine as the sun, in the kingdom of their Father. He that hath ears to hear, let him hear.43 Tunciusti fulgebunt sicut sol in regno Pa tris eorum. Qui habet aures, audiat.
The kingdom of heaven is like unto a treasure hidden in a field. Which a man having found, hid it, and for joy thereof goeth, and selleth all that he hath, and buyeth that field.44 Simile est regnum caelorum thesauro abscondito in agro; quem qui invenit homoabscondit et prae gaudio illius vadit et vendit universa, quae habet, et emitagrum illum.
Again the kingdom of heaven is like to a merchant seeking good pearls.45 Iterum simile est regnum caelorum homini negotiatori quaerenti bonasmargaritas.
Who when he had found one pearl of great price, went his way, and sold all that he had, and bought it.46 Inventa autem una pretiosa margarita, abiit et vendidit omnia,quae habuit, et emit eam.
Again the kingdom of heaven is like to a net cast into the sea, and gathering together of all kind of fishes.47 Iterum simile est regnum caelorum sagenae missae in mare et ex omni generecongreganti;
Which, when it was filled, they drew out, and sitting by the shore, they chose out the good into vessels, but the bad they cast forth.48 quam, cum impleta esset, educentes secus litus et sedentescollegerunt bonos in vasa, malos autem foras miserunt.
So shall it be at the end of the world. The angels shall go out, and shall separate the wicked from among the just.49 Sic erit inconsummatione saeculi: exibunt angeli et separabunt malos de medio iustorum
And shall cast them into the furnace of fire: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.50 et mittent eos in caminum ignis; ibi erit fletus et stridor dentium.
Have ye understood all these things? They say to him: Yes.51 Intellexistis haec omnia? ”. Dicunt ei: “ Etiam ”.
He said unto them: Therefore every scribe instructed in the kingdom of heaven, is like to a man that is a householder, who bringeth forth out of his treasure new things and old.52 Ait autem illis:“ Ideo omnis scriba doctus in regno caelorum similis est homini patrifamilias, qui profert de thesauro suo nova et vetera ”.
And it came to pass: when Jesus had finished these parables, he passed from thence.53 Et factum est, cum consummasset Iesus parabolas istas, transiit inde.
And coming into his own country, he taught them in their synagogues, so that they wondered and said: How came this man by this wisdom and miracles?54 Etveniens in patriam suam, docebat eos in synagoga eorum, ita ut mirarentur etdicerent: “ Unde huic sapientia haec et virtutes?
Is not this the carpenter's son? Is not his mother called Mary, and his brethren James, and Joseph, and Simon, and Jude:55 Nonne hic est fabrifilius? Nonne mater eius dicitur Maria, et fratres eius Iacobus et Ioseph etSimon et Iudas?
And his sisters, are they not all with us? Whence therefore hath he all these things?56 Et sorores eius nonne omnes apud nos sunt? Unde ergo huicomnia ista? ”.
And they were scandalized in his regard. But Jesus said to them: A prophet is not without honour, save in his own country, and in his own house.57 Et scandalizabantur in eo. Iesus autem dixit eis: “ Nonest propheta sine honore nisi in patria et in domo sua ”.
And he wrought not many miracles there, because of their unbelief.58 Et non fecit ibivirtutes multas propter incredulitatem illorum.
