DOUAI-RHEIMSNEW AMERICAN BIBLE
Let Samaria perish, because she hath stirred up her God to bitterness: let them perish by the sword, let their little ones be dashed, and let the women with child be ripped up.1 Samaria shall expiate her guilt, for she has rebelled against her God. They shall fall by the sword, their little ones shall be dashed to pieces, their expectant mothers shall be ripped open.
Return, O Israel, to the Lord thy God: for thou hast fallen down by thy iniquity.2 Return, O Israel, to the LORD, your God; you have collapsed through your guilt.
Take with you words, and return to the Lord, and say to him: Take away all iniquity, and receive the good: and we will render the calves of our lips.3 Take with you words, and return to the LORD; Say to him, "Forgive all iniquity, and receive what is good, that we may render as offerings the bullocks from our stalls.
Assyria shall not save us, we will not ride upon horses, neither will we say any more: The works of our hands are our gods, for thou wilt have mercy on the fatherless that is in thee.4 Assyria will not save us, nor shall we have horses to mount; We shall say no more, 'Our god,' to the work of our hands; for in you the orphan finds compassion."
I will heal their breaches, I will love them freely: for my wrath is turned away from them.5 I will heal their defection, I will love them freely; for my wrath is turned away from them.
I will be as the dew, Israel shall spring as the lily, and his root shall shoot forth as that of Libanus.6 I will be like the dew for Israel: he shall blossom like the lily; He shall strike root like the Lebanon cedar,
His branches shall spread, and his glory shall be as the olive tree: and his smell as that of Libanus.7 and put forth his shoots. His splendor shall be like the olive tree and his fragrance like the Lebanon cedar.
They shall be converted that sit under his shadow: they shall live upon wheat, and they shall blossom as a vine: his memorial shall be as the wine of Libanus.8 Again they shall dwell in his shade and raise grain; They shall blossom like the vine, and his fame shall be like the wine of Lebanon.
Ephraim shall say, What have I to do any more with idols? I will hear him, and I will make him flourish like a green fir tree: from me is thy fruit found.9 Ephraim! What more has he to do with idols? I have humbled him, but I will prosper him. "I am like a verdant cypress tree"-- Because of me you bear fruit!
Who is wise, and he shall understand these things? prudent, and he shall know these things? for the ways of the Lord are right, and the just shall walk in them: but the transgressors shall fall in them.10 Let him who is wise understand these things; let him who is prudent know them. Straight are the paths of the LORD, in them the just walk, but sinners stumble in them.
