DOUAI-RHEIMSNEW JERUSALEM
The just perisheth, and no man layeth it to heart, and men of mercy are taken away, because there is none that understandeth; for the just man is taken away from before the face of evil.1 The upright person perishes and no one cares. The faithful is taken off and no one takes it to heart.Yes, because of the evil times the upright is taken off;
Let peace come, let him rest in his bed that hath walked in his uprightness.2 he wil enter peace, and those who fol ow the right way wil find rest on their beds.
But draw near hither, you sons of the sorceress, the seed of the adulterer, and of the harlot.3 But you, you children of a witch, come here, adulterous race prostituting yourselves!
Upon whom have you jested? upon whom have you opened your mouth wide, and put out your tongue? are not you wicked children, a false seed,4 At whom are you jeering, at whom are you making faces and sticking out your tongue? Are you not thespawn of rebel ion, a lying race?
Who seek your comfort in idols under every green tree, sacrificing children in the torrents, under the high rocks?5 Lusting among the terebinths, and under every spreading tree, sacrificing children in the ravines, belowthe clefts in the rocks.
In the parts of the torrent is thy portion, this is thy lot: and thou hast poured out libations to them, thou hast offered sacrifice. Shall I not be angry at these things?6 The smooth stones of the ravines wil be your portion, yes, these wil be your lot. To these you havepoured libations, have brought your cereal offering. Can al this appease me?
Upon a high and lofty mountain thou hast laid thy bed, and hast gone up thither to offer victims.7 On a mountain high and lofty you have put your bed. Thither, too, you have climbed to offer sacrifice.
And behind the door, and behind the post thou best set up thy remembrance: for thou hast discovered thyself near me, and hast received an adulterer: thou hast enlarged thy bed, and made a covenant with them: thou hast loved their bed with open hand.8 Behind door and doorpost you have set your reminder. Yes, far from me, you exposed yourself, climbed on to your bed, and made the most of it. You struck a profitable bargain with those whose bed you love, whoring with them often, with your eyes on the sacred symbol.
And thou hast adorned thyself for the king with ointment, and hast multiplied thy perfumes. Thou hast sent thy messengers far off, and wast debased even to hell.9 You went to Molech with oil, you were prodigal with your perfumes; you sent your envoys far afield, down to Sheol itself.
Thou hast been wearied in the multitude of thy ways: yet thou saidst not: I will rest: thou hast found life of thy hand, therefore thou hast not asked.10 Though tired by so much travel ing, you never said, 'It is no use.' Finding your strength revive, younever gave up.
For whom hast thou been solicitous and afraid, that thou hast lied, and hast not been mindful of me, nor thought on me in thy heart? for I am silent, and as one that seeth not, and thou hast forgotten me.11 Who was it you dreaded, and feared, that you should betray me, no longer remember me and notspare a thought for me? Was I not silent for a long time? So you cannot have been afraid of me.
I will declare thy justice, and thy works shall not profit thee.12 Now I shall expose this uprightness of yours, and little good it did you.
When thou shalt cry, let thy companies deliver thee, but the wind shall carry them all off, a breeze shall take them away, but he that putteth his trust in me, shall inherit the land, and shall possess my holy mount.13 When you cry for help, let those thronging round you save you! The wind wil carry them al away, onepuff wil take them off. But whoever trusts in me wil inherit the country, he wil own my holy mountain.
And I will say: Make a way: give free passage, turn out of the path, take away the stumblingblocks out of the way of my people.14 Then it wil be said: Level up, level up, clear the way, remove the obstacle from my people's way,
For thus saith the High and the Eminent that inhabiteth eternity: and his name is Holy, who dwelleth in the high and holy place, and with a contrite and humble spirit, to revive the spirit of the humble, and to revive the heart of the contrite.15 for thus says the High and Exalted One who lives eternal y and whose name is holy, 'I live in the holyheights but I am with the contrite and humble, to revive the spirit of the humble, to revive the heart of the contrite.
For I will not contend for ever, neither will I be angry unto the end: because the spirit shall go forth from my face, end breathings I will make.16 'For I do not want to be forever accusing nor always to be angry, or the spirit would fail under myonslaught, the souls that I myself have made.
For the iniquity of his covetousness I was angry, and I struck him: I hid my face from thee, and was angry: and he went away wandering in his own heart.17 'Angered by his wicked cupidity, I hid and struck him in anger, but he rebelliously went the way of hischoice.
I saw his ways, and I healed him, and brought him back, and restored comforts to him, and to them that mourn for him.18 'I saw how he behaved, but I shal heal him, I shal lead him, fil him with consolation, him and thosewho mourn for him,
I created the fruit of the lips, peace, peace to him that is far off, and to him that is near, said the Lord, and I healed him.19 bringing praise to their lips. Peace, peace to far and near, Yahweh says, and I shall heal him.'
But the wicked are like the raging sea, which cannot rest, and the waves thereof cast up dirt and mire.20 The wicked, however, are like the restless sea that cannot be stil , whose waters throw up mud anddirt.
There is no peace to the wicked, saith the Lord God.21 'No peace', says Yahweh, 'for the wicked.'
