Sirach 13

DOUAI-RHEIMS	JERUSALEM
1 He that toucheth pitch, shall be defiled with it: and he that hath fellowship with the proud, shall put on pride.	1 Qui touche à la poix s'englue, qui fréquente l'orgueilleux en vient à lui ressembler.
2 He shall take a burden upon him that hath fellowship with one more honourable than himself. And have no fellowship with one that is richer than thyself.	2 Ne te charge pas d'un lourd fardeau, ne te lie pas à plus fort et plus riche que toi. Pourquoimettre le pot de terre avec le pot de fer? S'il le heurte il se brisera.
3 What agreement shall the earthen pot have with the kettle? for if they knock one against the other, it shall be broken.	3 Le riche commet une injustice, il prend de grands airs; le pauvre est lésé, il se fait suppliant.
4 The rich man hath done wrong, and yet he will fume: but the poor is wronged and must hold his peace.	4 Si tu lui es utile il se sert de toi, si tu fais défaut, il s'écartera de toi.
5 If thou give, he will make use of thee: and if thou have nothing, he will forsake thee.	5 As-tu quelque bien? Il vivra avec toi, il te dépouillera sans aucun remords.
6 If thou have any thing, he will live with thee, and will make thee bare, and he will not be sorry for thee.	6 A-t-il besoin de toi? Il t'enjôlera, te fera des sourires et te donnera de l'espoir, il t'adresserade bonnes paroles et dira: "De quoi as-tu besoin?"
7 If he have need of thee he will deceive thee, and smiling upon thee will put thee in hope; he will speak thee fair, and will say: What wantest thou?	7 Il t'humiliera au cours de ses festins, jusqu'à te dépouiller par deux et trois fois, et pour finiril se moquera de toi. Puis s'il t'aperçoit il s'écartera de toi en hochant la tête à ton sujet.
8 And he will shame thee by his meats, till he have drawn thee dry twice or thrice, and at last he will laugh at thee: and afterward when he seeth thee, he will forsake thee, and shake his head at thee.	8 Prends garde de ne pas te laisser séduire, pour ne pas être humilié dans ta sottise.
9 Humble thyself to God, and wait for his hands.	9 Quand un grand t'appelle, dérobe-toi, il t'appellera de plus belle.
10 Beware that thou be not deceived Into folly, and be humbled.	10 Ne te précipite pas, de peur d'être repoussé; ne te tiens pas trop loin, de peur d'être oublié.
11 Be not lowly in thy wisdom, lest being humbled thou be deceived into folly.	11 Ne t'avise pas d'être familier avec lui, ne te fie pas à sa faconde. Par son verbiage il te metà l'épreuve, comme en se jouant il s'informe.
12 If thou be invited by one that is mightier, withdraw thyself: for so he will invite thee the more.	12 Impitoyable est celui qui colporte les propos; il ne t'épargne ni les coups ni les chaînes.
13 Be not troublesome to him, lest thou be put back: and keep not far from him, lest thou be forgotten.	13 Prends garde et fais bien attention, car tu chemines en compagnie de ta propre ruine.
14 Affect not to speak with him as an equal: and believe not his many words: for by much talk he will sift thee, and smiling will examine thee concerning thy secrets.
15 His cruel mind will lay up thy words: and he will not spare to do thee hurt, and to cast thee into prison.	15 Tout être vivant aime son semblable et tout homme son prochain.
16 Take heed to thyself, and attend diligently to what thou hearest: for thou walkest in danger of thy ruin.	16 Toute bête s'accouple selon son espèce et l'homme s'associe à son semblable.
17 When thou hearest those things, see as it were in sleep, and thou shalt awake.	17 Comment pourraient s'entendre le loup et l'agneau? Ainsi en est-il du pécheur et del'homme pieux.
18 Love God all thy life, and call upon him for thy salvation.	18 Quelle paix peut-il y avoir entre l'hyène et le chien? Et quelle paix entre le riche et lepauvre?
19 Every beast loveth its like: so also every man him that is nearest to himself.	19 Les onagres au désert sont le gibier des lions, ainsi les pauvres sont la proie des riches.
20 All flesh shall consort with the like to itself, and every man shall associate himself to his like.	20 Pour l'orgueilleux l'humilité est une abjection: ainsi le riche a le pauvre en horreur.
21 If the wolf shall at any time have fellowship with the lamb, so the sinner with the just.	21 Quand le riche fait un faux pas, ses amis le soutiennent; quand le malheureux fait unechute, ses amis le rejettent.
22 What fellowship hath a holy man with a dog, or what part hath the rich with the poor?	22 Quand le riche trébuche, beaucoup le reçoivent dans leurs bras, s'il dit des sottises, on lefélicite. Quand le malheureux trébuche, on lui fait des reproches, s'il dit des choses sensées, il n'y a pas de placepour lui.
23 The wild ass is the lion's prey in the desert: so also the poor are devoured by the rich.	23 Quand le riche parle, tous se taisent et l'on porte aux nues son discours. Quand le pauvreparle, on dit: "Qui est-ce?" Et s'il achoppe on le jette par terre.
24 And as humility is an abomination to the proud: so also the rich man abhorreth the poor.	24 La richesse est bonne quand elle est sans péché, la pauvreté est mauvaise aux dires del'impie.
25 When a rich man is shaken, he is kept up by his friends: but when a poor man is fallen down, he is thrust away even by his acquaintance.	25 Le coeur de l'homme modèle son visage soit en bien soit en mal.
26 When a rich man hath been deceived, he hath many helpers: he hath spoken proud things, and they have justified him.	26 A coeur en fête, gai visage; l'invention des proverbes est un travail pénible.
27 The poor man was deceived, and he is rebuked also: he hath spoken wisely, and could have no place.
28 The rich man spoke, and all held their peace, and what he said they extol even to the clouds.
29 The poor man spoke, and they say: Who is this? and if he stumble, they will overthrow him.
30 Riches are good to him that hath no sin in his conscience: and poverty is very wicked in the mouth of the ungodly.
31 The heart of a man changeth his countenance, either for good, or for evil.
32 The token of a good heart, and a good countenance thou shalt hardly find, and with labour.
